you know what i mean. every comic book that has lasted more than 50 issues has had a story that was eerily familiar to one that appeared in... well... every other comic that has lasted 50+ issues. for example: 1)the amnesia story -- the superhero is unavoidably bumped on the noggin and, suddenly, cant remember who he is or what he does (and usually is visibly shaken while stating "i dont know who i am!"). often saved by a sidekick or friend of sorts, and frequently confronts an arch nemesis without even knowing them. 2) the blind story -- hit in the head with the all-purpose-comic-book-laser, standing too close to a bright explosion, etc. always an other-wise survivable trauma which leaves the hero blind (always temporary... except for that poor daredevil). hero is then forced to rely on his/her "other skills" to thwart the evil-doer for the day. hero typically regains sight immediately afterward. 3) the lost-powers story -- reasons for this can vary greatly. sometimes its a villain's "power stealing" device, sometimes its a mental trick, causing the hero to forget their powers, etc, etc. and, just as in "the blind story," the hero is forced to rely on other strategies (often in a 'tarzan' or 'robin hood' fashion) in order to defeat the bad guy. any others?

(4)I can't do this anymore! -- The hero experiences some sort of loss (girlfriend dying, supervillain blows up the city, someone gets the last Eggo waffle, etc) and decides to give up super heroing just long enough for some bigger tragedy to convince them otherwise.

5)The Old Friend Betrayal Story--the superhero is betrayed by a family member, or a best friend, or old flame. Sometimes the betrayer is revealed as having super powers, or is given super enhancements, or sometimes even magical abilities. Sure, it's a good story the first or second time, but again and again and again we see it.

The Arrogant Omnipotent Being Story -- The hero gets his powers increased for some reason. At first everyone's happy, but then the power starts getting to his head and he starts changing. In the end he becomes a threat, and he is comfronted. Then he realizes he's wrong, gives up the power and everything's normal again. The Baddies Team-Up Story -- All the baddies the hero has defeated in the past team up to destroy him! In the beggining, the hero ALWAYS loses, but then he manages to win, by himself or "with a little help from his friends".

I wish that was ALWAYS true.

8) the dream story -- everything is crazy! up is down, day is night, right is wrong, black is white! people who should be dead are back. things that went wrong return to haunt. people who like the hero end up hating the hero, and vice versa. and, before things could possibly get any worse -- *pop* -- the hero wakes up, and realizes it was just a dream. 9) the no-longer-secret id -- somehow, someway, someone deduces the protragonists' alternate identity and then threatens to reveal this information to the world! but, before the story is out, the mystery solver is thought crazy, killed, or otherwise forgets his information, keeping the secret safe for another day.

The "Not A Dream!" Story -- Exactly like the Dream Story, except... IT'S NOT A DREAM! They keep telling that to us, so we think all that wildness is actually happening, but in the end, everything comes back to normal when it's revealed that some villian has been able to alter reality and the hero stops him before losing his mind.

Time travel, either to a bizarre alternate future or to the past--or going to the past and changing something, leading to the bizarre alternate future. With the exception of the Back To the Future trilogy and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, time travel stories rarely have happy endings. Evil dopplegangers (with or without goatees) come from a parallel universe or dimension, which may or may not thrust our hero into their evil universe or dimension. A "what if?" story about if the hero somehow was not in the right place at the right time to get his powers, and what happened as a result (such as baby Kal-El landing on another planet with a red sun, Barry Allen going to the bathroom right before the lightning struck the chemicals, the Waynes making it a Blockbuster Night instead of going to the theatre, etc.)
