After dining in the rustic Ye Olde Trail Tavern, in Yellow Springs, OH (good place..excellent burgers and the best chili cheese fries on the planet...plus, beer and wine is cheap there), I walked across the street to one of my familiar haunts, Dark Star Comics, and picked up the following:
Tom Strong #18 The Ultimates #7
and the plush Streaky the Supercat doll, to go with my plush Bat-Mite and Ace the Bat-Hound.
Yep...my day was really eventful yesterday. How was yers?

Well it's better than working 7 nights a week like I've done the last 4 months.
Why didn't you get Promethea?
Whilst I really enjoyed Ultimates, I felt the long wait reall detracted from the book. I found myself enjoying the latest issue of Avengers far more!

I read Promeathea four the first four issues, and really enjoyed it....but had to drop it at that time.
I plan on picking up the trades sometime soon.

I haven't read Avengers since the Ultron storyline a few years back....I did catch the preview in Wizard for the new stuff, though...is it really good?

Johns run started a bit average but this latest issue was really enjoyable. A LOT of animosity between certain characters and a few good scenes and of course we have Gary Frank doing the art for 2 issues shortly!
Pick it up, basically since the last story - the Long Kang one, the Avengers have been given the keys to the world, so they set about getting all the nutters, when all of a sudden all the capitals of the world have disappeared along with Yellow Jacket and Wasp. There, now you're up to speed!

Now, your turn...
Are you reading and supporting BIG DADDY DANGER, as I have been? I'm a sucker for underdog books, and this one has all the makings to be one. Plus, some idiots over at the DCMBs keep trashing it...
While I will admit that it's one of the cheesier books out there, it's cheesy in a good way, and seems to be geared towards a younger audience (something we surely need in the industry right now)...
Books I wish I had the time and money to read:
any of the Greyshirt material coming outta ABC...I love the strip, just wish I coulda picked up the first couple of issues of the mini-series that just came out.
The Nocturnals- I've picked a few books up since they went to Oni Press, but haven't been able to put the effort into searching for all of them...it's a shame, too...I'm a longtime fan of the characters.
Green Arrow- i kinda got stalled around the eighth issue, mainly because alot of the shops in my area just had a hard time obtaining copies or just gave up ordering altogether.
JMS's Amazing Spider-Man: had to drop it after about four or five issues, now it's harder than hell to find the back issues I need now.

I've picked up all the issues so far, just waiting for some time to read'em - my new trend is to save a title up for a few issues and then read them all together!
Greyshirt was pretty good. The only regular monthly ABC book for a while!
Never been too much of a Nocturnals/Bereton fan, bought a oupla of the first series!
I'm afraid both Green Arrow and Amazing Spiderman are comics I have to read as soon as I get them. I sholdn't worry about Spidey, they're collecting it up pretty quick. As for GA, well after Smiths Initial 12 issue arc, his 3 parter was a bit weak! The new writer is pretty good however he's only there for 6 issues until Judd Winnick takes over.
Have you hear that the last 2 parts of Smiths Spiderman/Black Cat have been cancelled?

I'd assume either:
********SPOILER ALERT*********
a)because the book was very late
or
b)because of the implied rape scene at the end of the last issue [ 11-05-2002, 05:34 PM: Message edited by: Animalman ]

Ya know, I really really disliked this series as part of the rotating cast in the ABC variety book, but I found the mini-series to be one of the best things I've read in the past year. Absolutely ate it up. The short stories seemed like nothing more than rip-off's of Will Eisner's Spirit stuff, but the mini really expanded it and made it work for me. I loved the way that Veitch managed to tie everything into everything else throughout the series. Probably has my vote for best mini of the year...

Roy, I still haven't read the last five or six issues of Smith's Green Arrow, or the last six months or so of Spider-Man stuff. Took another sabbatical from reading comics for a while to let story-lines build up again. Thankfully, the Fed Ex guy just dropped off my monthly shipment from Westfield about ten minutes ago, and I think I'm gonna start getting caught up again. Hopefully by Christmas, I'll be caught up! ![[no no no]](graemlins/nono.gif)

Was it explicit?
I can't imagine Quesada cancelling the series, after given Millar the nod to have Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch an incestuous couple in Ultimate Avengers.

With the ABC stuff...I started out buying all the books...
I really dug Promethea, which my intial reaction to was basically this is what Moore would do if he was given free reign over Captain Marvel. people have argued with me in the past, saying that's what Miracleman was, and that Prom was his take on Wonder Woman...not so, IMO. Miracleman was based on a Marvel spin-off, but his stories were more science fiction oriented, such as Superman. No...Prom is alot like Capt. Marvel...both are beings that represent a wish fulfillment fantasy of a young adult and are both steeped in myth.
Plus, for some odd reason, the bad guy from the first couple of issues...the shadow thing called the Smee, I thought it was just incrediblly visuallly interesting. Just dug it. I hung around for the first 4 issues, then dropped it for financial reasons...intend on picking up the nice hardcover trades though
Tomorrow Stories was give and take...I liked Greyshirt and some of the Future American stuff...thought the rest was just kinda dull...dropped it after about five issues
Top Ten I really enjoyed.....stuck with it for about 8 issues, then had to drop it for financial reasons...plan on picking the stuff up I missed later though
Tom Strong I love...have stuck with it since issue #1...it's a shame that several people feel that it's the weakest of the line....

I find myself agreeing with Franta twice in one week, incredible.
I thought Tomorrow Stories was pretty weak in general, I lost interest in it early on. However, Greyshirt was fantastic, and gave me more reason to believe Rick Veitch is a genius.
Tom Strong is my favorite ABC book, it's the first thing I read every time it arrives(which isn't too often these days), and I'm shocked that some would consider it the weakest of the line. While Top Ten and Promethea are extraordinary in their own right, Moore has done the impossible with Tom Strong; he's built a deep, rich history and an epic legacy in less than 15 issues. Every time it comes out I'm reminded why I love it as much as I do, it's one of the few reasons I'm still reading comic books.

I hadn't heard anything about the series being cancelled...I know the solicitations for the last couple of issues were cancelled. but that's probably due to lateness. Since the lawsuit that Brian Hibbs brought on, Marvel is now cancelling and resoliciting all late books instead of shipping them late and making them returnable...It's happened to Ultimates and Spider-Man Blue also...

Don't take that tone with me, whelp! It's because of you, I'm saving my comics and reading a few issues at a time - I'm doing that with all ABC books, except Promethea! Some books really do well to read a few together - Doom Patrol being one!
