Now you couldn't possibly be my freind Brian, could you?? He's worked in a grocery store for about 5 years now and that is always his excuse for not going to a gig. This despite the fact that he's NEVER called in sick! Every year when the Coachella Festival rolls around and he swears he's going, along comes the day of the show and he busts out with "it's inventory and I can't miss".

'94 or so, on the Middle Class Revolt tour, at a club in Cincinnati called Bogarts. Sparse crowd. I hung out for most of the night with some guys who had driven up from Florida just for the show. Brix had just rejoined, which came as a surprise to most of us there.

Smith was going through one of his moods, I guess, since the show only lasted about an hour and ended abruptly when he walked off stage during a number. The band rocked, though.

They're coming here in a couple of weeks. I may go.

I noticed you mention the Jaxx. Been there a number of times myself.

They Might Be Giants (Good show....I wish I could remember more of it..I was pretty drunk)
Bob Dylan (I fucking got arrested at this show for drinking under age...can you believe that shit! With that hippy mother fucker probably stoned on staged I GET THROWN IN THE TANK!!)
Smashing Pumpkins
Lalapalooza 94' (Breeders, George Clinton, Tribe Called Quest, Smashing Pumpkins, L7, Green Day, and the ever lovin' BEASTIE BOYS)

Seen alot of other stuff but thats all I can remember right now.

If it was a question. Gene on my list was the band Gene. 1st album was HEAVILY inspired by the 80's band The Smiths even going so far as having the same style of album and single sleeve design. They are by far one of my favourite bands. They do have a Smiths influence but have come into their own voice since that 1st CD. Very UK sounding and very beautiful guitar based rock. I'd recommend either their greatest Hits CD or else their live CD, "Rising for Sunset". That show I happened to attend and am pictured in the crowd pic on the CD sleeve.

Yeah, it was a question. I thought you meant you'd seen them with only one bro (or you called them Gene for short). I've always found "It'll End In Tears" the perfect song to play for a buddy when get infatuated with a new lady. It grounds them quick (hey, I'm a cynic, what can I say).

I haven't heard Gene, I'll look them up.

BTW, what did you think of Daniel Ash's latest album? Unfortunately, I thought it was pretty weak. Oh well, I'm sure he'll rebound. He's got a lot of talent & a warped vision, and that's always a good combo.

Cheers!

I feel the same way about Aerosmith, put on a great show but I can't get a friggin' beer coz they're booze hounds. Meanwhile all the potheads around me are getting a decent buzz!

Sorry, ain't he. I just know how much shit needs to be done, and with people no-showing morning shifts and now kids leaving for college,I feel bad if I call off for anything other than a bad injury, death in the family, or I'm in the hospital.

Chalk up one more gig.

Just saw blur's last-minute concert at the Wiltern in L.A. so last minute that tickets had only gone on sale the day before.

They had just played the annual KROQ Weenie roast on Saturday to predictable results. Seeing as how KROQ's demographic nowadays is a bunch of metal kids who swear they're punkers.

After their less than enthusiastic greeting at that festival, I guess they were expecting more of the same at the Wiltern. Seeing as how KROQ was sponsoring it and all. 1st off they commented on the Wiltern, a beautiful large Art Deco styled theatre with balconies and a tiered standing room floor. I think they were expecting some dinky hall. Second, they looked absolutely humbled by the enthusiasm the audience showed for them. Arms raised, cheers and whistles and participation. Something that was totally missing from the Weenie Roast. They mentioned after they played "Out of Time" that the recption was a lot different than the other night at the KROQ thing. laughter and applause followed. All in all, one of the Best Blur gigs i've been to. They said they'll be back. Which judging from the past severl Blur L.A. appearances (mostly in festivals) was seriously in doubt due to them catering to KROQ and their listeners. I think they're starting to see that KROQ isn't really their fan base.

Went to go see Interpol at the Holywood palladium on Wednesday. GREAT GREAT show. The funny thing about the Palladium is that it's the one venue that has asshole security who think an Interpol gig and audience is the same thing as a gangsta rap gig and audience and both get the obligotory near-cavity search and the opresssive "NOTHING can be brought in" rule. Not even the loose change you have in your pocket! The place is poorly ventilated so it gets HOT really quick. In spite of this, Palladium shows somehow are always memorable in a GOOD way. I guess all that negative inspires everyone to try for positive and you get such an energy in there, especially when a great band is playing.

I saw Kevin Haskins of Bauhaus/Love and Rockets again. He's becoming quite the regular. Plus the place looked like the set of Underworld what with all the beautiful goth women about (all drunkedly staggering down the flight of stairs that lead to the ladies room  ).

The Inland Invasion was EXCELLENT. At least EXCELLENT once the opressively HOT sun went down and you wearn't being baked alive. The sun went down as Interpol were coming on for their set. Good show but Echo and The Bunnymen were absolutely incindeary. they were there to prove they wearn't no nostalgia band but a still vital but overlooked force. "Mac the Mouth" from the 80's was back and was being even more boastful than Liam Ghallager. He however had an amazing texture and weight to his boasts in the form of the great old and new songs delivered with a tenderness as the songs warrant and also the arrogance of someone who knows they're great. At one point he even boasted "we're the greatest band in the world!" Wathcing him , no one challenged him on that. Finally they stormed off the stage challlenging Duran and The Cure who followed to top that! I already have my tickets for their gig at the Sunset Strip House of Blues next month. :)

The Psychedelic Furs were good as per usual. The only foul up was when Richard Butler tripped on himself and landed flat on his back. As he lay there for a good few minutes he remarked "i'm such a suave bastard". He received a standing ovation once he got up and resumed the set. Self deprecation is cool. [cool]

Duran Duran were all about the hits and they had the place alive and singing along. It was total spectacle when they were on. I'll definately see them again if they return on their own.

The Cure sucked. They were out to bore and they succeeded admirably. They used that formula from their recent DVD of playing blocks of songs from one particular album and then moving on to the next one. All it served was to kill any momentum they may have gained from the stronger songs they chose to play.

Marc Almond was there to prove that he was a succesful solo act despite the fact that he was billed as being Marc Almond of SOFT CELL. After an endless set rife with his solo songs and the dreaded "new stuff", he finally threw the audience a bone and actually sang a couple of Soft Cell tunes. No "sex dwarf" though, even though he was introduced on stage as it being one of his hits.

I also happened to be sitting right behind the entire lineup of No Doubt (minus Gwen) and the singer from that ridiculous band Linkin Park was seated right behind me. He looked pissed that we regognized him but wouldn't want to talk to him. The guys in No Doubt came and went from backstage to the seating section. They did come out for the full Bow Wow Wow set to lend moral support to their drummer who was drumming for Bow Wow Wow. General Public surprisingly sang mostly English Beat songs which I wsn't expecting them to do but was happy they did. A great way to start the day IMO dancing along to all those old ska-ish pop songs.

Just came back from the Strokes sold out gig @ the Hollywood Palladium. I got to meet the singers from Queens of the Stone Age and The Distillers (who were there together), i saw Drew Barrymore dancing her ass of on the balcony and I saw that Sugar Ray singer as I was getting a drink. The Strokes kicked major ass and the Palladium felt like a sauna.

Just sobered up from the Dr. Chud's X-Ward show. Chud is the former drummer for The Misfits and Graves. The band played a surprising number of Misfits songs from American Psycho and Famous Monsters. They also played a lot of stuff from Chud's old band Sacred Trash and some new stuff on their soon to be released album.

Also suprisingly, I really dug all the opening bands. They were all local, so I was hesitant. Most bands here in the Dayton area are high school kids that love grindcore metal. But these were just good straight-up post-punk rock bands. The Stoics were first up and not bad. Followed by Legbone (originally Liquid Legbone), who are almost minor legends in the area. I saw them once before years ago, and they were good, but this time they were 200% tighter, better and full of energy. The last band before Chud was The Story Changes, a very tight emo band.

Unfortunately, most of the crowd was there to see Legbone, and afterward the audience dwindled. By the time Chud played, there were only 8 people in the audience. But they still played like there were 800, and kicked ass and had fun.

After the show, Chud and the band hung out with the crowd and talked to the fans. I got him to sign my Sacred Trash CD and the entire band to sign a poster for my girlfriend.

I ran into a friend of mine whom I hadn't seen in 7 years or so, we were in a band together. That's when I started drinking, and stopped by the time another friend of mine from work showed up to see Chud, and I ran out of cash.

Luckily I live only about a block away from the venue and didn't have to drive too far. If it hadn't been so cold, I would have walked.

I love beer.

I went to The Sounds/Rooney at the Henry Fonda Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. on Tuesday.

On Wednesday I saw Placebo at the Wiltern Theatre in L.A.

Placebo's show was incindeary by he way. The best one yet. Brian molko was genuienly surprised by the enthusiasm and responded accordingly with more energy than I've seen from them in a long long time.

Good times.

Here, one time only

UK and Indie Music comes to Rob's Damn Boards

Here's the entire sets by both bands in mp3 format. Just right click and "save target as" in whatever folder you want to keep them in.

Pixies Live @ Coachella 5/01/04

Radiohead @ Coachella 05/01/04

Great sets by the way. Although the Flaming Lips were the most meemorable simply going on presentation and visual style. Entering in a giant ball rolling over the audience is kinda hard to top!
