As a young boy, Matt Murdock was blinded by a radioactive isotope, which caused his other four senses to function at optimal efficiency. After the death of his father through ‘less-than-savory’ means, the young Murdock took to studying the law, which led him to become one of the best criminal lawyers in New York. By night, however, he is a costumed vigilante, bringing to justice those who’ve done wrong as… the Daredevil.

Daredevil possesses the acrobatic ability of a circus performer and the pugilistic skills of a heavyweight prizefighter. Though he has studied various Asian martial-arts techniques and American boxing, his fighting style is unique; it includes movements and blows from many disciplines. Daredevil is also a highly accomplished weightlifter.

Jonathan Crane, through his continued studies, has learned to make fear toxins – gases which allow him to make each man’s person demons a reality. Using these gases, he can allow men and women alike to fear whatever he wants them to, generally himself or an exposed weakness – all from how he makes the gas. These gases act as his arsenal against the costumed vigilantes of the world.

The Scenario

Night fell upon New York as Matt Murdock, adorning his seasoned red costume, stepped slowly out onto the balcony of his apartment, ready for a night of crime-fighting. To Murdock, it was always night, but as he stood there, he quieted his mind, reaching out with his four remaining senses into the night. Some distance away, Murdock picked up the sounds of a back alley mugging and, without hesitation, he leapt off of his balcony and bounded across rooftops, determined to bring the muggers to justice.

He was the Man Without Fear. He was… Daredevil.

The sounds that filled the air, mixed with smell of the sweat of three men and the stale taste in the air, were enough for Daredevil to pinpoint the location of the muggers in relation to his perch atop the buildings. “Help me,” came the cry of a probably sickly man, the one who was being mugged, apparently. In a flash, the Man Without Fear dove into the fray, landing on his feet and looking up at the two muggers, who suddenly grew very quiet. A smile appeared directly below the red mask.

Acting quickly, Murdock delivered several well-placed punches, including a few he’d learned from watching his father so many years ago. Soon, the muggers lay on the street, unconscious. As Daredevil turned to go, the thin man who had been mugged pulled himself slowly from the street and approached the vigilante. “Excuse me… Daredevil?”

Murdock turned. The thin man approached nervously. “Thank you, sir,” he began, offering his hand. “My name is Dr. Jonathon Crane, formerly of Gotham University. I just wanted to thank you… for helping me.”

Murdock felt a faint mist hit the lower portion of his face as he staggered back, unprepared.

“What was that?” Daredevil asked.

“Just a bit of fear, Daredevil,” the man said, his voice changing. “A one Mr. Fisk is paying me handsomely to turn you into him. You see, I am turning ‘the Man Without Fear’ into the Fearful Man…”

“How?” Daredevil asked, suddenly feeling very strange.

“Simple,” Crane began, removing his trenchcoat to reveal the garb of a scarecrow. “My fear toxins can be engineered to make those they are used upon fear anything I wish. The toxins I just sprayed at you will not cause hallucinations as many of my toxins do. Mr. Fisk confided in me that you were blind, a most helpful fact to know. No, my dear boy, the toxin used on you effects your other senses – causing a fear of them, actually. A fear of taste, smell, sound, and touch.”

“Impossible…” Murdock said, taking a fighting stance.

“Is it?” Crane asked, pulling his Scarecrow mask and hat onto his head. “We shall see…”

Impressive, Chewey. Most impressive. I would like to see this one in a few issues on the printed page.

I say Scarecrow! What can Matt really do to defend himself after that?

that was a pretty fuckin cool set up, chewy!! very nice. plus, i really like this match up. its a cool pairing.

now, my opinions... first off, i really dislike daredevil. his super power? lack of sight. i have a lack of height, but im notta super hero. my uncle has a lack of hair, but he's no super hero. but... when written well (*cough*frankmiller*cough*), the character is pretty frickin cool, and you can see there's definite power. he is a super hero.

dr (fraiser) crane's toxin is incredibly powerful, except for one major flaw. ... it has never worked for any substantial period of time on any one who falls in the "hero" category. apparently, as soon as you put on a mask or a cape or something, you're able to withstand the toxin after a few hours. shockingly, scarecrow always forgets that, as each time the hero comes out of the trance, he says "its impossible!" or something like that.

but, ill take that character as his best, too. and, really, the best representation i've ever seen of the scarecrow would be BTAS -- specifically the WB years. where the scarecrow actually LOOKED scary for once, his body a twisted and rotting, hung corpse. so cool. all that, and he can use his powers! he messed up batgirl somethin fierce in arguably the best episode ever, "over the edge."

and, tho initially, i thought daredevil's lack of sight might be a bonus to matt, since he can't see all the horrible illusions batman and robin (etc) see... now im thinking daredevil's enhanced senses would fuck him up even moreso.

instead of batman just hearing a creepy voice, daredevil might hear a SCREAMING creepy voice -- or a thousand screaming, creepy voices. instead of feeling 10 spiders on his hand, daredevil might feel 10 million spiders, with thorny legs and biting fangs on his hands.

surely, that would be enough to topple the crimson crusader for a substantial period of time. long enough, anyway, for scarecrow's goons to grab him and bring him to the kingpin.

granted, matty boy would more than likely beat it out and escape from the fat ass, .... but thats all after being "defeated" by scarecrow.

The current results are 5-3 in favor of Scarecrow. Would someone who voted for Daredevil share their thoughts, so as not to make this discussion seem too one-sided?

I voted for DD. I figured someone would come kick Scarecrow's skinny ass and save himn.

Really, I believe that even if the fear is Drug induced.....its still a matter of will to shake it off....Dare Devil's got some will power. Question is could he shake it in time.

I think DD would win. From the moment Murdock became blind he had to learn to push aside his fear and trust his other senses to guide him through life as a lawyer and a adventurer. I think the gass would mess him up for a short span of time than DD would pull it together.

Y'know, I usually make fun of the dreaded "Versus" topic as simple childish pap, but this is definitely on another level altogether than the run-o'-the-mill "Hero-1 VS Hero-2"-kinda topics. Well done, Walrus.

As far as how it would go in a comic? Daredevil would win, of course -- he's won almost every battle against his own enemies, and the Scarecrow has lost almost every battle against the Batman Family.

The real question is how would that battle go? And how much of a challenge could the Scarecrow present our own Mr. Murdock? Personally, as a Daredevil reader and a long-time Batman fan, I'd be very interested in seeing such a battle of the wills -- but only if it's written well.

DD's enhanced smell technically should make him more susceptible(?) to the gas. Should. Although, as has been pointed out, he's overcome fear gas before.
