I think King excells with shorter fiction, like his novellas and short stories. What have the best movie adaptations of his work been? Stand By Me ("The Body"), Shawshank Redemption ("Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption"), and The Green Mile... all based on his shorter fiction.
I went through my King phase back in 8th and 9th grade. While I haven't read anything by him in years, these are the longer novels I liked way back then:
Dark Tower trilogy: The Gunslinger, Drawing of the Three, The Waste Lands (and I haven't read the fourth book) The Stand It Misery Eyes of the Dragon
