In my opinion, I'd say Evil Dead 2 and Dead Alive for their humorous approach to horror, and 28 Days Later for it's ubercreepiness.

Not necessarily in this order:

Event Horizon
Ravenous
The Ring
Night of the Living Dead (The 80s original version.)
Identity (I know it wasn't COMPLETELY horror, but for the large chunk that was.)

The original Night of The Living Dead was before the 80's and in black and white.

Your thinking of the version starring Patricia Tallman.

I have to agree with Pariah on Event Horizon, plus I absolutely LOVE The Exorcist.

But the only thing I've ever seen that gave me nightmares, was the episode of X-files about this man that could streeeetch. He could get in everywhere.... yack!!! Can't exactly remember the episode-title or his name, though. But what I do remember is standing in the shower afterwards keeping a close look at the floor, just in case a finger would appear....

Yeah, I know. That's whay I said the 80s original. They both went off the same story from the others. I figure both original stories.

I didn't like Event Horizon, either. Good idea, bad execution.

I remember that episode of X-Files. Actually, that was the very first episode I ever saw. I remember the ending was really freaky(underneath the escalator in a mall or something).

I thought it had a really cool premise. Plus I saw the original Japanese story, which was performed perfectly. The American movie would have been good if they got better actors and if they didn't cut it down to two hours instead of four.

The scariest X-Files episode for me was.....DAMN!! Can't remember the name. It was about the Peacock family and their incestuous ways. The mother's womb was supposedly damaged in such a way that it would allow multiple spermine to enter and make a mutant child. Then, what kids she had strapped her to a board, kept her under the bed, and fucked her when they got lonely and decided they didn't have enough sons/brothers.

Another X-file episode that I found a tiny bit scary is the one written by Stephen King. It's about a doll that's found in the sea, given to a little girl and then odd things happen....

I remember one that really freaked me out, it was about this incestual family that were deformed; they were almost ape-like. The beginning was really creepy, a couple of them snuck into this family's house in the middle of the night and brutally beat them with bats or clubs of some kind.

I wanted to smack that little kid that was holding the doll, she pissed me off BIG TIME. I couldn't tell if she was encouraging the doll or if it was just controlling her, but either way, I still wanted to maim her.

Some that I agree with that others have listed:

    Frankenstein (1931 version)
    Dracula (also 1931)
    The Mummy(1932)

    Halloween (the first one, 1978)

    From Dusk Till Dawn

And some that I'm surprised no one has listed:

    THE THING (1982, John Carpenter)

    Psycho(1962)

The Sixth Sense (2000, I think)

    Beetlejuice (1988) --well... fun horror...

American Werewolf In London(1981) more fun horror.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (both the 1954 and 1978 versions)

The Fly (both the 1950's Vincent Price version, and the 1986 Jeff Goldblum version)

Frankenstein:The True Story (1974) with Michael Sarrazin and Jane Seymour.

    Rosemary's Baby (1968)

Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)

Needful Things ( a great Stephen King story).

Plus a few I haven't seen since I was little, that scared the crap out of me, that I'd love to see again:

    The Thing That Wouldn't Die

    Zontar, the Thing From Venus

    It's Alive (1978)

~

Also among my favorites is the entire first season of the original b&w 1963 series of THE OUTER LIMITS.

There are so many TZ episodes that are excellent.. I have all 5 box sets on DVD now, and both Outer Limits sets.

A few of my favorite TZ episodes are-minus the actual episode names... the one where the astronauts see their shipped has crashed but they landed next to it...
The one where deron from bewitched lands a coin on his side and he can read people's minds...
The one with the crazy conspiracy theory guy who spends all day in his apartment (basically tries to find people are anti-government ala the red scare)...
The one where the lady keeps getting freaked out by the hitchhiker following her...
The one where the jesus/alien brings a cure for cancer with him but he gets ramrodded...
And lastly the "monsters of maple st" the grand alien experiment of suspicion.....

You have some other 70's classics: Chainsaw Massacre, I spit on your grave and I dismember momma!!

What about the gore like the Wizard of Gore!!

My favorite top ten:

Friday the 13th 1 & 2
Superstition
Nightmare on Elm Street
Halloween 1 & 2
Thing 1982
Exorcist
Basket Case (campy horror)

and a tie between Superman 4 and Batman & Robin!!

These movies sucked so much ass, I thought I WAS watching a fucking horror movie!! I couldn't sleep for weeks after seeing both of these duds!! [mwah hwah haa]

Frankenstein Junior?

the only movie EVER to give me nightmares was actually "The Name of the Rose" with Sean Connery and Christian Slater.

Though I wasn't very old at the time I thought it was immensely scary. I can still vividly remember how scared I was.

Movies like Blair Witch, the Ring and all those did nothing for me.

Though, if I ever see them, movies like Crossroads, Glitter and Gigli might give me nightmares too

The first movie to scare the shit outta me was Masque of the Red Death, starring Vincent Price. I was probably 6 or 7 at the time, and I caught it on Creature Double Feature one Saturday. I've been hooked on horror movies (ultra-scary, ultra-gory, and ultra-cheesy) ever since.

I like the Dracula movies that Hammer put out. And the Poe-inspired flicks that Roger Corman did with Vincent Price. Romero's Night of the Living Dead can still give me chills, though I liked Dawn (both the original and the remake) and Day for different reasons. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (which I only got to see recently when I bought it on DVD) surprised and impressed me with how gory it isn't. John Carpenter's The Thing still scares the piss outta me. And I liked The Ring, The Others, and The Sixth Sense. Of course, I think The Exorcist, The Shining, The Universal Horror movies from the 30s and 40s, and Halloween are classics.

Some solid foreign horror movies are: the Ringu series(Japan), The Eye (Hong Kong), Haute Tension (France), The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Germany), and Audition (Japan).

Guilty Pleasures? Try:

Night of the Demons
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
Monster Club
Superstition (crappy movie, but the last minute or so make watching it worth it!)
Tales From The Crypt and Vault of Horror (the British movies)
Final Destination 1 & 2
anything that was on Elvira's show
Devil's Nightmare
April Fool's Day
