im in the opinion that, even with all the good being PC has caused... its severly crippled our society. we're too backwards now. everything is dependant upon what our lawyers tell us. as an RA (resident assistant... like a campus parent) at school, we're taught the basics of sexual harassment. you realize, you can now be charged, even imprisoned, for acts as simple as checkin a girl out from across a room. if she's insulted / offended, you're dead. has nothing to do with touching her, or even saying something. all you have to do, quite literally, is look at her funny. thats rediculous. that makes living more difficult. plus, i think, its insulting to women who HAVE been harassed in some way -- because now their torture has been belittled.

ooh, another example: say you wanna describe someone to one of your friends. there's now a list of whats ok and not ok to describe the person. "he's black" -- insulting
"he's italian" -- fine
"he's tall" -- fine
"he's fat" -- insulting
"he's nice" -- fine
"he's short" -- fine
"he's poor" -- insulting to me, those, up there, are all the same things. if you wanna say they're ALL insulting, fine. ill accept that as a viable answer (tho ill still disagree). but, at least its a more logical answer. however, like i said, i dont see how it COULD be the right answer. if you're black, its justa characteristic. a descriptive word to help convey your appearance. its not a bad thing -- the guy im describing knows he's black, fer cryin out loud, so why should i have to whisper when i describe him. (which, i always find funny. as soon as i say something like "whoa, check out that hot girl, over there, the black ("asian" also fits) one," everyone around me goes, "shh!" why?! am i going to accidentally alert them of their race?!? will they freak out and go, "oh my god! i AM black!!!") same thing with fat people. if a fat guy is fat, he already knows he's fat! its a descriptive way to differentiate him from someone else, and thus, another descriptive term. but, for whatever reason, saying "that short guy over there" is fine. how does THAT pass by without complaint? how is being short or tall any less or any more insulting than being fat or skinny? backwards world.

My family always sits in the non-smoking section when we eat out. I'm the only smoker and if I want tolight up I leave and go elsewhere to smoke.

LLance, next time you're in Chicago, you can smoke at my place. We can even sit at the smoking section at Hooters (You get a better view of the waitress station from there too!) I've always been polite enough not to smoke in enclosed places around non-smokers, but I can kind of understand the feelings of some non-smokers. When I quit a few years back, I couldn't stand the smell of smoke on smokers clothing. Damn near made me puke sometimes. I got over it by picking up the habit again. I feel much better know... And just as a word of warning. Apparently it is also politically incorrect to call a female co-worker a "crack whore". Trust me, this can cause problems...

I'm reminded of a quote by Billy Connolly. He said "Political Correctness is the language of cowards" and I couldn't agree with him more. I take the already mentioned case of "African American" folks. What a stupid bloody term. If they don't wanna be called black, fine, but African American is just plain dumb. My ancestors come from: Ireland, England, Wales, and I think German. But that doesn't mean people have to refer to me as an "Irish Australian" or a "German Aussie". I'm Australian. I live here, I will probably remain here for a very long time and I live like one. Likewise with many of the so-called African Americans in your country, I'll bet. That politically correct term is far more rascist than referring to someone by the colour of their skin, because that's just a description, whereas the other suggests that "Well, I'm fine with you and all, I'm just not gunna class you as an American like me, because you're black, and like, different and stuff" You see my point? Politically Correct people are doing more harm than good, IMHO. Well, that's what I reckon, anyway...

I think PC has become terribly overblown. Sure, I believe 'nigger', and racial slurs like that are very offensive. However I'm amazed as to how many people find 'black', 'mexican', and even 'asian' to be equally as offensive. Am I the one that's backwards?
This may not have much to do with political correctness, but I've found that fraternities are offended when they're referred to as 'frats'. It's shorter! I'm with Jeremy on this one. I think political corectness is one of those good ideas that has been taken to an unreasonable extreme in some cases. That myth about words never hurting that kids are brainwashed with is a load of malarky. Words do hurt, and there's nothing wrong with cautioning people not to insult others accidentaly - because you never know what someone will find insulting. However, there are many examples of PCness being taken way too far.

I don't know that the issue is "PC" per se, as much as it is the nation becoming filled with people who operate under the principle that being offended is the same thing as being damaged/harmed.
It's as though you should be able to take legal action against someone if they do nothing more than offend you or hurt your feelings. Witness the outrage over Janet Jackson's nipple, and that someone almost immediately started up a class action suit against her et al, claiming that she and others were damaged by simply having SEEN Jackson's breast and nipple.
Now to my way of thinking, a claim of "being damaged" by seeing her boob is outrageous. I will admit that it was inappropriate to display the boob during the halftime, but I don't see how anyone, young or old, can sustain the argument of having been damaged by this. Offended, ok, fine, I can accept somebody got offended. But being offended should not constitute grounds to take legal action, and I say that as one of the more liberal thinkers in Rob's little slice of heaven here.
As a society or even as subgroups within that society, we need to focus on taking action on issues greater than the merest of offenses.

this is simply backlash from the superbowl "fiasco," where sworms of america's youth were instantly blinded and praising satan at the 1-secong glimpse into the blurry pit of hell centered on janet's right boob.
thats what caused mtv to pull some sexual videos. thats what caused the nba all star game to feature the safe apple pie presentation from the beach boys. thats what caused the clear people (cool!) to, all of a sudden, find stern more offensive than usual.
the whole thing is ridiculous

I was referring to your nation's much more draconian libel and slander laws, your nationalization of television stations and similar government polices that are way beyond anything we have over here.

And when did saying that someone is black become offensive? Hell, in the 60s, it was radical, and the then-colored folks wanted to be referred to as "black". Remember, James Brown was saying loud that he was Black and proud, not that he was an african american with mocha-colored skin and he was proud.

How much on TV is worth seeing?  I didn't even bother to bring a TV for my dorm room this year! (I personally think that's all that's saving my GPA.) But yeah. I don't know if I could say that many media outlets anywhere are shining beacons of political correctness or universal propriety. At least we'll always have Stuart Scott and Sportscenter.

Sure, I could do that, byt again, some might get offended, and the question is whether or not the word nigger is in the anti-rascism law, though I hardly think anyone wants to make a case out of it.
