Just to play devil's advocate here...the fact that millions of people like the Beatles could simply be proof that they were good only at catering to a certain lowest common denomonater, rather than actual musical quality.
I remember when
Slim Whitman was allegedly selling more records than the Beatles AND Elvis. Does that mean he's the greatest male singer of all time?
