Iraqi Official: Saddam Gives Info on Weapons, FundsDUBAI (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein has given his U.S. captors information on hidden weapons and as much as $40 billion he may have seized while he was Iraq's president, an Iraqi official was quoted as saying on Monday. "Saddam has confessed the names of people he told to keep the money and he gave names of those who have information on equipment and weapons warehouses," Iyad Allawi, a member of the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council, told the London-based Asharq al-Awsat daily. "The Governing Council is searching for $40 billion worth of funds seized by Saddam when he was in power and which has been deposited in Switzerland, Japan, Germany and other countries under the names of fictitious companies," Allawi said. He said the council had asked international legal companies to track the money. Allawi said interrogators were now focusing on whether Saddam -- arrested by U.S. forces this month and held at an undisclosed site -- had any links to militant groups. "Interrogators are now focusing on the relationship between him and terrorist organizations and on funds paid to groups outside Iraq," Allawi told the newspaper. It is not clear whether Saddam was ever behind ambushes that have killed at least 211 U.S. soldiers since Washington declared major combat over on May 1. The capture of Saddam has not ended guerrilla activity in Iraq, which U.S. officials believe involves non-Iraqi militant Islamist guerrillas and Saddam loyalists.

Okay, now lets just wait for the onslaught of stubborn people with intellects born of their own stupidity to come and say, "They made him say it! They made him say it! They planted that Money!"

So, this is good. Hopefully they can track the money and use it to pay for the rebuilding of Iraq. This is why the US went to war, to remove a tyrant and return the country to its people. If that involves returning money too, all the better. Right?

I don't get something. Why are we trusting Saddam? How do we know any of the info he's giving us is legit? Why are we taking his word for it?

Why would he lie at this point? He's screwed in more ways than one. If the people of Iraq are going to judge him and he DOESN'T cooperate, the death penalty will remain on the table. I'm guessing, since he made this deal, he got life.
I'm also guessing that Iraq might be seeing some of that money in such a case.

I gather the idea is to track down the cash and give it to the new Iraqi government.

I'm betting--Against Bush's wishes--That some of that money is going to be taken as payment for freeing the country.
Just a guess.

I honestly hope not. That sounds a bit too much like payment for the invasion -ie. looting by a conqueror.

I wouldn't put it that way, I don't think Bush is at fault in that sort of department, but that's semblence of what I'm thinking.

That really wouldnt make sense, the more money Iraq has the less we have to spend rebuilding......so why would you take 10 billion and then spend twenty rebuilding....i think its safe to say it will be returned to Iraq.....

The US has been talking about removing Saddam for years. The WMD's were just the rallying point, not the motivation. I am sure some of the motivation had to do with screwing over France, Germany, and Russia. You know, reminding them who's boss.
Eh, what do I know. I'm just talking out of my ass.
Look, Saddam had chemical weapons. We know this. He has used them. He was playing games with the inspectors for years. You know he moved things around so that they never found anything. The question is how much did he move? How much did he have? It's probably all in Syria.
The point is, the world made a decision to leave him in power as long as he did not pose a threat to anyone, well, except for his own people. Anyway, he broke the rules, and he was a tyrant, and it was his time to go. Now the Iraqi people have a chance to be a free people. Their destiny is in their own hands, where it belongs, not Saddam's.

Hey make no mistake, I think that the dethroning of Saddam is a hugely positive thing. But the reason for going to war was the suspision of wmd, and not the he was a bad guy. We, Denmark, also participated in the war, and have lost soldiers in Iraq. But I do think that the Bush admin. tried to pull wool over our eyes with the wmd thing. I know that we only joined so that we looked good in the eyes of America, witch pisses me off.
Yes Saddam needed a good booting, no doubt, but wouldn't it have been nice if the iraqi people had done it by themself ? It would leave the question of "what next" simple.

It would have been nice if the Germans had got rid of Hitler before he killed all those Jews, but we see what waiting around does. I think he killed enough of his neihbors, and his own people course i guess if its not our own people alot of people dont care.....

Thats not really a fair comparison. There were no puplic uprising against Hitler, who, despite being a... well Hitler, was democraticly allected, whereas the iraqi people did try to topple Saddam after the first gulfwar. And I wasn't saying that it didn't matter if he killed a bunch of his countrymen, and I hope that wasn't the impression you got. I'm just saying that I'm not sure that it was the responsebility of the world community to take him out. And I find it very hard to belive that the murder of thousands of iraqi citizens was the motivation for the bush admin. to go to war. If it was , they'll have enough work for the next few decades

....that was my poinbt the Iraqi people tried on their own and could not overcome his stranglehold on power. i find it odd that people say he should have been removed from power but because the US/and or Bush had other reasons they dont like it. i dont care if Bush wanted him removed cuz of his mustache, a mass muderous tyrant who was a danger to his own people as well as his neihbors is gone.....

I'll be the first to admit that i do find things more suspect if they are done by the US goverment, but then I also find that there are plenty of reasons to support this scepsis. And, it is said, the iraqi uprising were based on a pormise that the US army would assist. A promise which were withdrawn on the eve of battle.
In general I don't like the american foreign policy but lets not get into that
Yes Saddam is out of power. Now let the Iraqi people sentence him so that he can die in pain...

Fah Ulh If It's PAIN Ya want for Saddam, The punishment for Saddam could be : Nail him To a cross at a Football stadium. Televise it Worldwide. Have Rebok, McDonald's, Hasbro, etc get a Share of the Commercials. Their could be a WORLD WIDE lottery. Who ever guesses CLOSEST to how long Saddam lives on the cross wins. All proceeds go to the Iraqi people. And Think of the Action figures that can be made! Saddam on the Cross - With REAL bleeding action! Either THAT - Or if ya want Saddam to REALLY suffer for a LONG time - Lock him up in the same Cell with Michael Jackson - for LIFE. >:)

Saddam would require a team of Dr. Phils working around the clock for about the next 100,000,000 years just to begin to Un fuck up Saddam's head. Also some prozac. Nah, on second thought, just nail Saddam to a Cross.
