Bought the "Ultimate Edition" two disc DVD of this flick today. This is the fourth installment of the Highlander film franchise, for those uninformed. This also the first of these flicks I didn't get the chance to catch in a theatre. Actually, I was kinda cautious about seein' this, what after bein' disappointed by the last two sequels (though, I will admit that I can stomach the second film now, after the release of the "Renegade Version" re-edit).

I am a huge fan of the first film, but the television series seems to lack something , to me at least. This film seems to not acknowledge the last two films at all(good thing), picking up directly after the last episode of the television series (another confusing good thing) and a few years after the first film (Confused yet?)*.

Then after a few good action scenes (involving some kinda monks that kick ass-shotgun and machine gun style...trust me, it's cooler than it sounds), we're introduced to a new immortal who beats the living shit outta about 15 o' these monks, Jet Li style. This is actor Donnie Yen, who proves to be the most interesting character in the film, who sadly isn't utilized enough.

What follows seems to me to be just a rehash of the television series, just filmed on a bigger budget.

Did I like it? It was okay...but that was about it. Better than the last two flicks, but nowhere near as good as the original.

Check it out if ya got nothin' better goin' on.

* Okay...here goes. It seems that the first film, in continuity terms, happened. Then there was HIGHLANDER 2: THE QUICKENING, a jumbled mess of movie. There are two versions of this flick, the one released to theatres and early VHS printings (that you should avoid like the plague) and a "Renegade Director's Cut" that is not a vast improvement...but at least it's understandable. Continuity-wise...it doesn't exist....thank God. Then there was the television series, which had all kinds of wacky ideas, that acknowledges the first film, but not the second. Then, HIGHLANDER: THE FINAL DIMENSION comes along, which throws away the end of the first film, but takes claim of the rest of it and disregards the second film. It also doesn't lay claim to any of the television series ideas. Finally...there's HIGHLANDER ENDGAME, that claims the first film, disregards the second and third, and adds in the tv series for good measure. God...I thought Legion continuity was confusing to me these days.

Well, I agree with you on the fact that anything other than the first movie sucked. But I did enjoy the series. Nevertheless, I thought ENDGAME was a big dissapointment, it was good because it disregarded everything but the first movie and the series, but I felt it was an overproduced series episode, and not that good at all.

What extra features are in the DVD?

Special Features include:

Feature Commentary track with producers Davis and Panzer, the editor, and the co-executive producer

interactive game

Visual Effects presentation

Disc Two-
An Earlier Full Length test cut

Behind the scenes featurette

Character Timeline

and finally, a script to screen transfer

Oddly enough, they don't include an original theatrical trailer, which seems to be a given these days...... the special features on a disc usually consist of this and nothing else most times. Ironically, though, there is a "showcase" track, which includes the trailers for several other flicks. Maybe they just forgot to stick it on the disc.

The one time that I was able to view a Highlander film in the theater, was the time I wished I hadn't.

The last time I read a Wizard mag (probably in late '99 or early '00) there was a blurb for Endgame. A couple of scripts were on hand, so there might have been God knows how many variations on the story. The one that they were talking about - where one of the Macleod's die - must have been the one that the producers went with.

I was looking forward to the film, I was happy that it had been released... To say that the ending upset me highly is an understatement. Maybe I care about the characters too much, but I actually cried at the fight with Duncan and Connor. Connor would NEVER be like that. I can't believe that they actually made this script....

Rumor has it, Carrina, that Lambert was growing tired of the character (If true, you could sure tell by his wooden performance in ENDGAME), and wanted his character to die, hence it was scripted that way. But who knows?

Actually, I thought he looked angry most of the time. The only exceptions were in the historical scenes between Lambert & Paul. I saw what appeared to be a genuine camraderie between them. Paul & Lambert seem to actually like working together ; I've seen them only on the first TV show episode & the movie, but they're a fantastic acting team.

Honestly, the first Highlander film was a one-shot idea, and a great movie. Everything else created around and after it has done nothing but undermine the main premise of that original classic.....that being: There can only be ONE!

I never understood why they never just made prequels instead of sequels.

I thought the whole thing about the "kill count" was absurd. How the hell could they know exactly how many immortals each guy has killed?
