If you're an X-Men fan you should like the book. Simple.
Arts fantastic and characterization is spot on. Dialogue is fresh and the action engaging. Any X-Fan should make this title a regular. I havent bought X-men books in 4 years.

I'm the furthest thing from a fan of the X-Books, but I'm really enjoying this run. Whedon's storytelling gets better every issue and Cassaday's art is, as always, amazing. I picked up the first issue just to see what all the hype on the boards was about and was so engrossed that I bought issue #2. I say, skim the first issue and, if you're not at all interested, don't bother. However, you really are missing out on a pretty good run, I must say.

I started reading X-men back when I was about 12. This was when Dave Cockrum was drawing the book and no one had yet heard of John Byrne.
This is the first X-book to give me that same giddy feeling of adolescent wonder since the days of Claremont, Cockrum and Byrne.

I like this series, especially in issue #1 where he had Cyclops blast the crap out of Wolverine. But I really really didn't like him having Cyclops doubt himself in this issue. It's like a giant step backwards for the character. I was hoping he'd be tougher after having been the vessel for Apocalypse. He was much more decisive in Grants run (except for when we was a weiner and ran away after Jean kicked the White Queens ass).

The Kitty/Emma thing was a mixed bag for me. On one hand, I thought Kitty pointing out that Emma was a villian when they first met and that she hadn't gotten over that was great. On the other hand, it reminded me of the fact, and here I'm being a total Louis Lane here, I know,  , but back when Emma first appeared, she was clearly much older than Scott or Jean and looked more likea 40 year old Faye Dunaway than this perfect twentysomething hottie that she's drawn like now.  But that's just me being an old fogey, I guess.

Whedon's got about as much talent as an aluminum can. Claremont lost anything original to say about ten years ago. The fact that this run makes everyone feel all gooey inside is a perfect example of rehashed nostalgia. Grant Morrison's run may not have been perfect, but, at least it was original and fresh. I've seen all of this a million times.

yeah, I agree. I hate the idea of spandex on the X-Men, but I don't blame Whedon. I guarentee he was told to do it. I mean, the whole explanation on why they were going back to costumes was weak given what Morrison already had them say on the subject, and it seemed forced.

ASTONISHING X-MEN is excellent. Two issues in and it's perhaps the best mainstream super-hero comic out there. The art is exquisite and Joss's dialog, plotting, and characterizations--Scott's confusion, Kitty/Emma, Hank--are enthralling.
The only good thing about reading in TPB form is that you'll get to read the whole story at your leisure, but in the meantime, you'd be missing the best super-hero book out there (I'm not including the super-hero deconstruction that is SUPREME POWER, which is an equally enthralling story).

This is the only part of your post I agree with. I usually cannot stand JMS, but, SUPREME POWER is an excellent read. Sure, the bloated egotist is padding the hell out of it, just to get it to the 12 issue mark. But, Gary Frank's pencils really help the medicine go down smooth. His facial expressions, layout, and, overall anatomy have jumped light-years ahead of his previous works in HULK, and MIDNIGHT NATION. He lost the cartoony softness to the faces, and has found a very stylized and realistic blend to the rough and the smooth of dramatic storytelling.
I recommend this title to anyone and everyone.
Besides, Wonder Woman is naked. It's a nice change.
