Jordan's the greatest and most notorious athlete(and arguably, person) of the last century. Anything he does is headline news, in the public's eye. Shouldn't blame him for that, if he had his way it wouldn't be.
Also, it's his third retirement, which I'm sure you know. Exaggerate all you want, but it's not as unusual as you seem to think it is. How many times have Sugar Ray Leonard or Larry Holmes retired/returned? Bobby Orr did it several times, as well, his last retirment coming when he was 53.
We've seen several coming out of retirements just in the past half-decade, Mario Lemieux, Ryne Sandberg, Jose Rijo, Magic Johnson, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few.

None had endorsements prior to Jordan, and as we've all pointed out, endorsements are a major part of an entertainer's income. Guys like Tiger Woods owe their success to Jordan in that area.
