my oint is they DO NOT contribute any actual social value to society other than entertain people who hold them in hgher esteem than they should because they are jealous of their skills ...too bad they couldn't admire true humanitarians who TRULY help the world...missionaries and the like...
You can't sit there and write that Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier was valuable purely for entertainment reasons. You can't hate on athletes just cuz they used to beat the crap out of you in high school. They like EVERY cultural outlet, have influence on society.
