Speaking about the casting, Russell T Davies said, "It's wonderful to welcome an actor of Simon Callow's calibre on board the TARDIS. As soon as the words 'Charles Dickens' first appeared in Mark Gatiss's clever, scary, inventive script, then we knew there was only one actor we wanted to approach.
"We're genuinely honoured that Simon has accepted, and I know that Chris and Billie are delighted too. This sets the standard for a Doctor Who with wonderful casts, exciting scripts and the highest production values."

Glad they are putting some of the historical elements into the new series.
The original series was intended to be semi educational.
Not sure about the leather jacket look. If you humanise him too much you lose the other-worldly mystery that comes with him being an alien.

Yeah, I agree. I am, however, of the "wait-and-see" mindset. There will only be an initial thirteen episodes for the first season. So, I think this is more of a "mini-series"-type run, where they'll get the proper amount of feedback from across the spectrum of fans and non-fans alike. After that, assuming it continues on, I imagine Davies will tweak it as needed. Either way, new Who is a good thing.
