From the Cubs' perspective, it wasn't the smartest thing to do, but you definitely can't blame the guy. Rules are rules, and instincts are instincts.
Besides, even if he didn't touch it, there were 3 other guys right there who probably would have. Somebody was going to prevent Alou from catching it, either way.
