You didn't have to join the forums - you got them free when you signed up with the company as a service provider. They were more like chatrooms with the added option of being able to send messages. None of the threads were very long as most people preferred to talk with each other live.
The internet was rather unstable in 1995 which is when I first got online. Internet Explorer used to crash all the time so I didn't go there very much.
After we ditched Compuserve, I ventured onto the world wide web proper. First messageboard was probably the DCMBs, although I didn't post there much. It was Lucifer writer - Mike Carey's ridiculous 'teabags' thread that kept me interested.

Rob kind of 'forgot to delete' the massively off-topic Teabags thread when it was taking up huge quantities of space on the old DC Boards.
After the revamp of the DC forums, Rob moved the thread over to his boards in an attempt to snare a few posters and bring them over to the RKMBs - the comic forum where you can say: 'fuck'.
It's good that the thread still exists as it's a snapshot of the friendly relationship between the creators of Lucifer and fans of the title.
There was an attempt to re-start 'Teabags'anew over on Matt's lucifer forum but it didn't really gain any momentum. I like to give the original one a kick every now and then, just for old times sake.
I don't know if Mike Carey is aware that the thread escaped the apocalypse at DC. I think it might scare him if he knew that Teabags was still a going concern.

My first major MB experience was with TheForce.Net's Jedi Council forum -- in 1998 I was the first poster there to reach 1000 posts!
I moved to the DC boards in 1999, first as mostly a lurker, until the MBL drew me in and I discovered a few ruffians on OPPT...
