I grew up in Saskatchewan, the armpit of Canada, where the winters were half a year long and the mosquitoes and grasshoppers were a plague. I couldn't wait to leave that place, and I finally did at the age of 18.

Still, there are some things I miss about it. I liked the hot and dry summers, and I liked the five-foot-tall snowdrifts on my front lawn that happened once in a while. The deadly cold was a bit much, though. The west coast has made me too comfortable to go back to a climate like that any time soon.
