If it means more focus on Nadia, that's a good thing.

Episode 4.20: The Descent
After learning the awful truth about Nadia's childhood caregiver, Sophia (Sonia Braga, "American Family," "Kiss of the Spider Woman"), APO races to track her down while an agent's life hangs in the balance. Meanwhile Sydney and Nadia question Sloane's trustworthiness now that his obsession with Rambaldi may have been renewed, Jack has an unsettling meeting with Katya Derevko (Isabella Rossellini), and Vaughn asks Jack a surprising and momentous question. Angela Bassett guest stars as Hayden Chase.
Episode 4.21: Search and Rescue
Upon discovering that Irina Derevko (Lena Olin) is alive, Sydney, Jack and Nadia set out to find her in order to thwart Elena Derevko’s (Sonia Braga, “American Family,” “Kiss of the Spider Woman”) deadly Rambaldi endgame. Meanwhile, Dixon’s condition takes a turn for the worse. Angela Bassett guest stars as Hayden Chase.
I'm so excited about these episodes. Angela Bassett has been extremely entertaining in the episodes she's been in so far.
I'm not sure if Lena Olin will actually be in these episodes though. We might have to wait until next week for her.

No, the season finale is next week at ten. The reason its two hours tonight is because lost is going to be two hours next week.

It doesn't make much sense to have the two hour episode this week. But thats the way they scheduled it.

Is the season finale still 90 mintues? And I thought Lost was going to end with a 90 minute season finale as well?

That's too bad. But, the way they set it up with tonight's episodes, an hour should be more than enough.

Copied from my Alias community on LJ... First the rant. Vaughn carrying the ring on a mission and then proposing right before they jump. Give me a friggin' break! That will so compromise the mission you moron! First off, don't carry the freaking ring with you on a mission! Second, don't freakin' propose right before you guys are going to jump out of a plane. That will only serve to distract her, no matter how good she is. GAH! I so don't like the Syd Vaughn pairing. Where's Will when you need him? Now that I got that out of my system, and yes I was yelling a good portion of that at the tv, onto the rave. Jack was so AWESOME tonight! He was so cuddly at times, believe me, if you've seen it you'll agree. He was great! I loved how he just lit up when he saw Irina. You just KNOW he wanted to pull her into his embrace and have his way with her, after she cleaned up on the plane. Loved the way she slugged him though, that cracked me up. Actually what killed me was when the CIA agents stormed Syd and Nadia's place and took an inventory of their stuff. LOVED all the weapons in Syd's room. LOL I couldn't stop laughing as the guy was reading off the list of all the stuff she had stashed away. Reminded me of a certain blond Russian I know. I can so see IK doing that. ;-p Anyway, getting back to Jack and Irina, that's one couple I can and have endorsed since her early episodes. Yes I know, I've been saying she wasn't to be trusted, but looking back on it as Jack has, I see what she was up to. Now granted, I can't figure out the CIA deaths, but at least I can see her 'obsession' with Rambaldi. Now that we know Elana's the Rambaldi freak, Irina was just trying to stop her all those years. Makes sense now, of course we didn't know any of that before. Loved the scene in APO when Irina asked Jack how his jaw was and he said he's had worse, then he smiled at her and she smiled back. I kept thinking that those 2 were going to have one seriously private reunion, if you know what I mean. *nudge nudge wink wink* OH, I did catch some nods to other shows though. Chase's line at the begining when she told them to becareful, I practically screamed Hill Street Blues. Actually I did that mentaly. Man I hadn't heard anyone say that in that sense in YEARS. please tell me I'm not the only one old enough to get that. The other, as much as I hate to admit this, probably wasn't a nod to anything, more like coincidental, but it struck me. When Vaugn proposed, that situation that lead to the proposal, on a mission, his desperation on how he had it all planed out, etc, but then just propossed. That was very Scarecrow and Mrs. King. Lee did a better job of it though, because 1, he didn't have the ring with him, and 2, it was when he rescuded Amanda after nearly losing her. THAT was a better don't want to miss out on doing this, proposal. Vaughn's just seemed stupid. yes I was yelling that at the tv too. OH OH OH, I just forgot another great moment. Man Jack ROCKED tonight. Ok shutting up now because my brain is slowly oozing out of my ears and I can't remember anyting any more.

Jack was definitely great in this episode. So many good parts. The return of Irina, dixon and Chase. All the family stuff. The proposal. Can't wait till next week.

When Irina slugged Jack, did he say "It's good to see you."? My mom said something just as he said that line and I missed it. I forgot what she was asking me, something about the show that she was lost on and of course I was trying to listen to what he said.

Nah, they didn't say anything to each other, not until the plane. Loved the episode, finally that nagging Covenant thing was covered as well as where Sloane and Nadia had disappeared to at the end of last season. Those had been bugging me. Nice to see some threads finally being tied up.

Oh I know.
JJ will always tie up the loose ends, it just takes a matter of time.
As for when it'll be out on DVD. It seems they're usually out by Christmas at the latest. I think October's been when the last 2 seasons were out.

That'd be good. Like I said, I 'd hope that the release would let new fans (which would include me, having only started around Christmas) be up to date. I've seen the first three seasons...so it's just this one. Yup, September would be great (or early October, as the new seasons usually start later in the month,no?).

That was a great cliffhanger!
I think there are three possible ways this could turn out, and two of them involve amnesia. I'm going with one of those, and Irina being a key to next season.
I just hope the first few episodes of next season aren't as stale as the first episodes of this season were.

I loved all the Jack and Irina moments tonight. I just knew Irina was going to sic Jack on Yelana. That was a given, but a great one. I have to say, Jack and Irina have become, if not always were, a favorite couple of mine. I thought it was cute last week when she walks into APO and Jack sits her down in his office. The first thing she says is she apologizes for her indiscresion with Sloane. Shows she still loves the man. Jack's smile and soft side were nice to see too.

As soon as Vaughn asked Syd to marry him in last week's episode I knew something was up! And damnit, I was right!
And what's this crap, "My name's not Michael Vaughn." Holy hell. If they somehow manage to set this up where his face isn't his own either and it comes out that it changes because of the car crash . . . man, I'm gonna be ticked.
They can't keep Nadia sedated for long. I've heard rumors that the character will have a more active role in the next season due to Garner being pregnant.
Lena Olin rocks! I've so missed her character on the show. It was very touching to see her and Syd at the end. And, not so surprising to see Jack let her go either.

I don't want them using amnesia a second time, but of the two ways to use it:
1) Vaughn wakes up and can't remember who he is. Meanwhile, something is going on that only he has the knowledge to stop, and with Irina's help, they save the day, blah blah blah.
2) Vaughn wakes up and doesn't remember that he's Michael Vaughn. That is, he reverts back to his true self, whoever that is. Of course, this totally screws up Sydney's love life, and they need Irina to help them put everything back together and, you know, save the day, blah blah blah.
I'm just glad Irina is back in the fold. I hope we get to see her develop a relationship with Nadia next season.

I'm betting Vaughn (or whatever his name is) is a Rimbaldi follower. He probably arranged the meeting with Sydney because she's the chosen one.

Now for the bad news: From what I understand, everyone at the show is proceeding as if Season 5 will be the last. And that includes series creator J.J. Abrams. "We're sort of approaching this season as we do every season, like, 'This is it! So, let's just do the best job we can.' In that regard, I feel like it could be the last season, but there's been no indication [from ABC] like, "Wrap things up in 22!" And if such an edict were to come down from the network, J.J. assures me he'll be given enough time to script an appropriate farewell. Source: Ask Ausiello @ TVGuide

It occured to me when I was watching it that the episode was set up as a possible series finally. Had they known it would be cancelled, they could have just left it at Syd and Vaughn going off to elope.
I don't think the show will last more than one more season. Networks are stupid, and they always think there is something better out there to run in the place of a show with a loyal fan base. ABC is no different. I will be very surprised if Alias sees a 6th season. As long as we get a full season next year, without timeslot shifting, I'll be very happy.

Ah yes, but how long as NYPD Blue been on? I think there have been other shows on ABC that have outlived that 5 year rule, let's say, although I haven't really watched ABC (for other shows, aside from extreme makeover home edition) in years so I don't know if there's been any others that have out lived it.
BUT maybe another network will pick it up. NBC has no problems with long running shows. Both L&O and L&O SVU have been on for ages. Although the original has been on longer than SVU. Third Watch had a decent run, up until they decided to give it the axe this season. Course it's decline in ratings MIGHT have something to do with the fact that they not only moved it to Friday nights, but then kept playing with the time and at one point, I don't know if anyone knew when it was on. *HINT NBC*

Alias' best chance of survival, should ABC be stupid and not renew it for a 6th season, would be to move to cable, not another broadcast network. One thing that would help the show's ratings is sindication. New viewers are hard to come by with a show like this unless they have an easy way to catch up. Sure, they can rent the DVDs, but how many people actually do that?

Like Abrams said, this is his decision, not ABCs. Maybe he feels that the show has run its course. With Garner being pregnant and all, maybe be feels its wise to stop the show now. I doubt ABC will do anything to upset Abrams since he is responsibe for two of their most watched shows.

I read that he wrote five pilots for ABC, one was an Alias spin-off that was going to center on Weiss. I really hope that one gets made into a series.

No spin-offs please. Weiss is awesome, but Alias only works because it's Alias. And Weiss is a key supporting character.
