Casino Redux?
The latest rumors on Bond 21.

December 01, 2004 - According to a report in Britian's Sunday Times, the "next James Bond film is to turn away from the high-tech gadgetry and special effects of recent 007 productions. The remake of Casino Royale, the first Bond novel, will concentrate instead on the character of the spy, painted by Ian Fleming in the book as a suave, coldly aggressive seducer."

Citing an insider at Eon Productions, the Times claims the "decision to make Casino Royale comes after Quentin Tarantino said at the Cannes film festival that he would like to adapt the book for the screen. Tarantino's words seem to have spurred the action from the Bond films team."

Alas, don't expect producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson to actually hire either Tarantino or series star Pierce Brosnan for the film. The hunt continues for a new 007, with the rumored contenders being Dougray Scott and Ewan McGregor.

As the Times points out, Casino Royale was published in 1953. It has been adapted twice before, first in 1954 as a CBS telepic starring American thesp Barry Nelson and then as a spoof in 1967 with Peter Sellers, Orson Welles, David Niven and Woody Allen.

Martin Campbell (GoldenEye) will direct the next Bond film from a script by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, which reportedly contains "more of the elements of earlier Bond pics than the more recent effects-packed pictures." Could these Casino Royale rumors be for real?
