something i'm fine with. as a miller fan, you could also see the same thoughts regarding the chest symbol, which previously was without logical explanation.

if batman were to make sense, he wouldn't have a cape, wouldn't have a symbol, wouldn't have a name, wouldn't wear a mask, wouldn't have handles atop his head, and wouldn't drive around in a big, splashy, fire-spewing car that everyone can clearly see heading towards wayne manor every evening.

but the fact that the character has done all that for so long without much fuss means its become acceptible. its now just a matter of making it excusable.

and, with comic book physics and logic, writers can get all sortsa creative with the reasoning.

the chest symbol, as mentioned above, is (or was) to draw gun fire to a part of the body easier to shield.

the cape has many uses. its been used as an offensive weapon, with weighted edges that batman can whip around. its been used to help cloak him in darkness and hide. it helps to give the regular-man-sized bruce wayne the appearance of being much larger and demonic. it helps to grab the air and slow his descent in roof top leaps. it can be shielded in ways his costume can't to protect from acid or fire.
