LITTLETON, Colorado (AP) -- A dentist found the source of the toothache Patrick Lawler was complaining about on the roof of his mouth -- a four-inch (10-centimeter) nail the construction worker had unknowingly embedded in his skull six days earlier.

A nail gun backfired on Lawler, 23, on January 6 while working in Breckenridge, a ski resort town in the central Colorado mountains. The tool sent a nail into a piece of wood nearby, but Lawler didn't realize a second nail had shot through his mouth, said his sister, Lisa Metcalse.

Following the accident, Lawler had what he thought was a minor toothache and blurry vision. On Wednesday, after painkillers and ice didn't ease the pain, he went to a dental office where his wife, Katerina, works.

"We all are friends, so I thought the (dentists) were joking ... then the doctor came out and said 'There's really a nail,"' Katerina Lawler said. "Patrick just broke down. I mean, he had been eating ice cream to help the swelling."

He was taken to a suburban Denver hospital, where he underwent a four-hour surgery. The nail had plunged 1 1/2 inches (4 centimeters) into his brain, barely missing his right eye, Metcalse said.

"This is the second one we've seen in this hospital where the person was injured by the nail gun and didn't actually realize the nail had been imbedded in their skull," neurosurgeon Sean Markey told KUSA-TV in Denver. "But it's a pretty rare injury."

Lawler was recovering Sunday in the hospital, where he was expected to spend several more days.

Despite his lack of medical insurance and hospital bills between $80,000 and $100,000, Katerina Lawler said her husband is in good spirits.

"The doctors said, 'If you're going to have a nail in the brain, that's the way you want it to be,"' she said. "He's the luckiest guy, ever."

That's what happened to a South Korean man who had a nail embedded in his skull for that long, but was unaware of the source of the problem.

"Finally, the unnamed victim could take it no longer and went for a checkup," reports the London Mirror. "He was amazed when doctors told him the cause of his agony."


Hospital X-rays revealed a two-inch nail stuck in his skull. The man reportedly said he couldn't remember how it got there, but later recalled banging his head at work near the time the headaches began.

"It's a miracle he survived," a medic in Seoul told the Mirror.

The nail was removed in surgery Saturday.


The case is reminiscent of a California man who survived six nails in his head during a construction accident involving a nailgun earlier this year.

Reports said Isidro Mejia, 39, of Lancaster, Calif., slipped and fell while working April 19, triggering the gun which was said to be in automatic, rather than manual mode.

He was airlifted to Providence Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills, Calif., where doctors spent five days removing the metal spikes.

The neurosurgeon who operated on Isidro could not believe he was still alive. With injuries like that, he should have been dead.

"He has been taken out of intensive care and although still groggy and on medication is expected to make a full recovery. His wife and family are obviously delighted that he survived and are looking forward to getting home," Green added.

Well it could be like my doctors when I was about 8 or 9,constantly telling me there was nothing wrong with my knee despite the pains I kept getting & were basically telling me I was making it up.
When I was 18 I finally told them I wanted to see a physio.
In the very first session he diagnosed my problem which was cartledge infection caused by an underdeveloped muscle to the left of my kneecap.
Doctors are lazy fuckers who dont wanna even bother examining you unless you pay them loads of money!

Man Gets Shocking Diagnosis

FRESNO, Calif. -- A California man with a pain in his neck had no idea that it was a 2-inch nail.
Steven Villagomez, of Fresno, Calif., went to the doctor and received the shocking diagnosis.

His X-rays showed the nail lodged in his neck.

Villagomez said he has no idea how or when the nail got there.

The nail was removed from his neck last week.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- A construction worker accidentally shot himself in the eye with a nail gun and then pulled the 2 1/2-inch nail out of his face, according to a police report and a co-worker.

Joseluis Franco, 19, was using an air-powered, Hitachi nail gun to help build a home Wednesday when a nail bounced back and lodged in his eye, crew leader Rogelio Ocampo said. Franco was nailing a two-by-four to concrete when the nail ricocheted.

Franco was conscious when police arrived at the scene and was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where he was treated and released. Police said Friday they don't know the condition of Franco's eye.

Originally from a town near Acapulco, Mexico, Franco has been in the construction business for about three weeks, Ocampo said.

"I don't know what's going to happen to him," Ocampo said. "I don't know if the insurance is going to cover his bills or anything."
