Jet-ting: Hackett resigns under rising pressure Associated PressNew York Jets offensive coordinator Paul Hackett resigned Wednesday, ending a four-year stint marred by criticism for his conservative play-calling. Paul Hackett oversaw an offense that was ranked 17th in the league in scoring.
The move was expected after the Jets' 20-17 overtime loss to Pittsburgh in the second round of the playoffs Saturday.
Jets head coach Herman Edwards "and I agreed that the time was right to move in another direction," Hackett said in a statement. "There are other opportunities that I would like to explore. I leave knowing that I've worked extremely hard and had a hand in the organization's recent success."
The Jets showed little imagination in their version of the West Coast offense, ranking 17th in the NFL in scoring this season even though Curtis Martin led the league in rushing with 1,697 yards.
Chad Pennington threw for 2,673 yards and only 16 touchdowns, while the Jets ranked 22nd in passing yards and managed 51 points in the first quarter during the regular season.
Once Pennington returned from a strained right rotator cuff in December, Hackett went even more conservative. The tight ends were virtually invisible in the offense, and playmaker Santana Moss was hardly used after a breakout 1,000-yard season.
Perhaps most upsetting to team officials was the lack of offensive scoring in four games against Pittsburgh and New England, where they managed a total of two touchdowns.
"The biggest negative is not being able to score enough points in those games," general manager Terry Bradway said Tuesday. "You can go back, and find out that there were probably a bunch of plays that were left on the field."
Hackett started losing his supporters midway through the season. Edwards never gave his longtime friend a ringing endorsement, while Pennington would only say that he supported any decision Edwards made on the coordinator's future.
Even when Hackett tried to mix things up, it failed. One play that will be remembered from the regular season is LaMont Jordan's pass with the Jets leading the Ravens 14-0 late in the first half. Ed Reed intercepted in the end zone, Baltimore gained momentum and eventually won 20-17 in overtime.
"Looking at what we need to do to move forward, Paul recognized that a change needed to be made for a number of different reasons," Edwards said in a statement.
Hackett joined the Jets after serving as head coach at Southern California from 1998 to 2000. He was also head coach at Pittsburgh before taking over as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach in Kansas City from 1993 to 1997.
Among those thought to be candidates to replace Hackett are Chiefs QBs coach Jason Verduzco and Saints offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy, whose contract is up.

perhaps not.
but the jets' offensive production has been wary, at best, during his reign. their infamous "3rd and 10 running play" has upset more than just a few fans.
were the jets more experienced as an aggressive offensive team, their skills and adaptation would adjust accordingly, giving them a better chance at puting some points on the boards more frequently. all of which would lead to a playoff team with strong offensive possibilities, instead of just a playoff team.
(offense) practice makes perfect, and the jet have had none.

Stop yer griping, Robbo. Ya got the Yankees. Ya can't have everything.
The Jets have a Super Bowl title in their history and have made the playoffs two of the last 3 years.
The Bengals? Nada on either of those points.

im not griping. i'm explaining the article's POV to you. you brought up a point, i addressed it.
further, the jets superbowl was in the 60s. no matter how hard i try to remember it celestially, i can't. other than that, the jets have been a good team, at best, in my lifetime.
and finally... i don't need a winning team to be happy!
for my entire life, the jets have never advanced past the playoffs, let alone seen the superbowl on anything but a TV. and... i don't care! they're still my favorite team, they'll still always be my favorite team, and i still love watching the games. going to a jets game with my dad sounds fun as hell, even if they lose 50-10.
winning isn't all that important to me.

The real surprise is that Hackett was actually given a choice in the matter.I would have expected the Jets to show him the door weeks ago.

You couldn't fire him during a season in which the Jets were constantly in the playoff picture.
And how you fire a guy goes along way to saying how you will treat the fired guy's replacement in the future. The NFL's a small fraternity.

i'm very much against mid-season firings. even if i don't like the player or coach. just bad karma, and a bad message to the remaining team / fans.

One time this guy tried to rob me, so I took my shotgun and shot him in the spine. The next place he robs better have a handicap ramp.

It really doesn't matter since he's clearly wrong. The Jets do not suck.
