bane 1.0 - as he is now:

Born to serve the life sentence of his father, Bane's childhood and early adult life was spent behind the walls of Pena Duro, the infamous prison/fortress of Santa Prisca. Bane was made the subject of experiments with Venom, a gene altering drug capable of giving its user tremendous strength in exchange for his sanity. His enormous physical strength and capacity for rage amplified by the poison in his veins, Bane is a most formidable foe. He has since forgone an addiction to Venom, however it is said he is now more dangerous than ever.

your task: reinvent the character.

redetail the character in every aspect you desire; origins, powers, continuity, villains, costume (include sketches if you'd like). change and improve anything and everything from the original design, but with full knowledge that you'd still like to appeal to the original audience (i.e; be careful not to change too much)

together, we could relaunch the entire character - devise a working backstory, plot, drive, and appeal. right all the wrongs set forth by our predecessors. upgrade, update, enhance, depower, redesign... rebirth the character as your own, version 2.0!

I’ve heard the name but I’ve never read a Bane story so I don’t know how much of a departure this would be.

I saw a documentary about these awful prison colonies in North Korea called kwan-li-so. These are camps where those charged with political crimes serve their life sentences alongside three generations of their family.

My idea is that Bane’s grandfather was an American operative in Korea. While working on a particularly sensitive mission, his cover was blown and his handlers bailed, leaving him at the mercy of the Korean authorities. The Korean army had developed a steroid that they hoped would produce a stronger, more powerful soldier and wanted to test the cumulative effect of the drug over several generations. Rather than executing the American agent they decided that they would use him in the experiment.

The drug worked well – Bane’s father was significantly more powerful than his grandfather, although the side effects caused both men to lead extremely short lives. By the time Bane reached adulthood the Korean army realised that they could no longer contain him and so conspired to send him back to the U.S.

Upon his arrival in America, Bane begins tracking down the few remaining men who left his Grandfather to die. Having disposed of them he commences visiting revenge on the subsequent generations of their families. He is aware that he does not have much time left before he dies and this leads him to work fast and brutally.

Have him gain the reigns of leadership in Santa Prisca, preferably governmental status where he could wage wars and remain untouched, though leading some kind of mass rebel organisation in his home country, or branching out into a serious terrorist group might be interesting

He should be Batmans equal both mentally and physically, so no being beat down on by the Bat or even Az-Bat, and none of that crap where he went off an worked for Ra's only to look incompetent. He shouldnt have been lusting after Batmans woman either, that just made him look stupid because you knew he'd always be in Bruces shadow when it comes to Talia

None of that cheap 'gun for hire' routine he seemed to turn into, that totally ruined his character for me, he just became another thug who got clobbered by Batman. The stalking and tiring out of Batman was what made his character for me, the way he toyed with Bruce then just swooped in for the kill and took over Gotham. That was his main strength and he definately should have stuck with it

Keep the venom too, turn it into not so much of an addiction, but a trump card he plays when he cant win with his ordinary strength. I was thinking about the Venom develeping some sort of insanity inside him, but then he'd just become another one of Batmans crazy villains, he should be so much more, up there with the DCU big dogs

For some reason I have the comic that explains Bane's origin. I like it a lot.

I like Bane just the way he is. But I still say that they should make him mayor of Gotham.....Or maybe governer of state.

bane started out great. cool character, cool premise, cool "gimmick." though i'm still kinda unclear as to why he was deemed sucha genius (he shot a grenade at arkham. ... duh.), they built him up as one, and i was willing to accept it.

but then venom became stupid. it became something that he (and earlier, bruce) couldn't control, making it just like any other drug -- and not even berzerker-rage (i.e; wolverine) like.

plus... c'mon, there's no more efficient way to soak it in except these loose fitting tubes? even yer average street junkie holds the IVs to their arms with rubberbands. just silly. from there, bane continued to spin out of whack, as other detailed above.

i think a great start would be to give bane mastery over venom. give him a blockbuster-type frame, enormous and menacing, but not drugged out or dependant. the venom no longer need be injected, rather, through training (or eating or whatever) its simply a part of him.

further, he's intellectually adapt. where as formerly, they just claimed him to be smart -- now, he should be. he should be as devious as luthor and as powerhungry as kingpin. as others said, he should be a more balanced foil to batman, as opposed to the simple thug he is today (that is, if he's still around at all)

I always idealized Bane being to Batman as Venom is to Spider-Man: as good as the hero at everything that makes the hero unique and special, but a hell of a lot bigger and stronger, with more of a killer instinct. I like the idea of Bane as a charismatic leader and strategist, who can also crush people's skulls in his hands (a la Kingpin). He should be one of the villains that truly makes Batman worry a little.
