The Shadow: The 4-issue "Blood and Judgment" miniseries by Howard Chaykin, and then the ongoing series that followed, written by Andy Helfer and drawn first by Bill Sienkiwicz, and later, Kyle Baker. They were late-'80s mature readers DC books, so they were just ahead of their time for the Vertigo treatment. Unfortunately, the zany, dark, mayhem-packed ongoing series was never completed, as the owners of the rights to the Shadow didn't care for their character being decapitated and his idiot twin sons grafting his head to a robot body. A more "straight-forward" (less edgy) period piece series, The Shadow Strikes, followed. Unfortunately, DC doesn't own the rights to The Shadow anymore, so I doubt this will ever be reprinted.

Justice Inc., another pulp hero update for mature readers (dealing with The Avenger), also by Helfer and Baker, a 2-issue miniseries with very experimental art. With Baker's visibility at DC, this could definitely benefit from a rerelease in a slim TPB.
