They're "updating" KOJAK-- new series Friday nights on USA. First it's the Kingpin in the DAREDEVIL movie, now this... What if Paulie Shore played SHAFT, huh?

As far as I'm concerned, no one can compare with Telly Savalas. No one. That man was brilliant.

As someone old enough to remember the original "Kojak," this does puzzle me.
A major part of the character was his ethnic, that is Greek, heritage. It was, in fact, something of a big deal at the time.
It's one thing to change the race of "generic" character in a remake (for example, I don't think making "Kingpin" black was that big of a deal. He's supposed to be a big bald crook, that's it. He race was sort of irrelevant). But here, it's sort of destroying the point of doing the remake to eliminate one of the two main things that set the character apart.
It'd be sort of like remaking "Shaft" with Jet Li or Chow Yun Fat in the title role. They might be good actors, they might be good at playing a tough private dick, but they aint good at playing up the important point of the character's race.

I don't think that the fact that he was Greek was as big of a deal as you're making it out to be, G-Man.
That said, I'm not really a fan of updating a character with a race change (a la Kingpin) but I'll give it a shot.

Telly Savalas was Kojak. There is no one who can fill his shoes. That said, since they feel they have to remake the show, I'm glad they are going in another direction with Ving Rhames. He fills out the suit the same, but everyone knows he's not Telly Savalas. If this show works, it will be because the character is written for Ving Rhames. And I do hope it works. Kojak was a great show, and a great character. I think it would be very cool if someone else could do something new with him.
Maybe we'll be able to compare this with Battlestar Galactica? It's clear that they weren't trying to do what was, rather, they recreated the show, and I think it's a lot better. Now, I don't think this new Kojak will be better than the original. Kojak didn't need to be changed, and it didn't need an update. But casting Ving Rhames means they aren't expecting me to be able to compare it to the original. Rather, they are trying to recreate the show and the character. It could work. I am willing to give it that chance.
By the way, when does it premier?

I'll catch one of the repeats. And boy do they repeat it.

I hadn't thought of it that way.
Very good. I approve.
