Yeah Rob, UBB Threads was what I was mentioning before as an upgrade of sorts...
I like em'. Sounds like a plan.
And go DEDICATED!

And sorry, didn't mean to get yer hopes up Mr. Adam West. (Aren't you on Family Guy now?)

I've had a quick look at the sites on the other end of these links and consequently I am now a member of a community that I know nothing about, under the name Magic Raymond?!?. I don't think Magic Raymond will be doing much,if any posting.

It's difficult to pass judgement on the boards because aside from minor details, they look like hundreds of other boards that you see all over the internet. I didn't really like the designs or the colour schemes but this is purely cosmetic and I guess there's some scope for you to set up the site the way you want it.

I imagine the things that will recommend using these boards is going to be the stuff behind the scenes - reliable, flexible software, good tech support etc.

good idea to register, bw7. thats really the only way you can truly check out all the features of that type of forum vs. this type.

cosmetically, everything on that board and this one can be changed. color scheme, basic layout, etc. for example, my boards look like this, but the same program for another site made them look like this. so, don't get too caught up in a critique of the colors and background images.

if you review, be more wary of what the screens look like when you first enter. or when you reply to a post. how the private messages and profile screens look. is it as easy to navigate inbetween forums.

etc, etc.

Looks pretty much the same with a few added touched. I like the "Quick Reply" box at the bottom of each thread. Now I don't have to wait for a reply page to load to be a smartass.

Question.

Do you think they are going to merge the UBB threads with Classic when they hit Version 7?
Or just keep it separate?

UBBDEV.com seems to be a hybrid, am I wrong in this assumption?

I like the navigation of the sample threads and the transitions, but obviously a lot of MOD and hack work would be in order when changing to this. I guess the more hacks you have now, the tougher the move. Luckily the CGI code is all the same.
That's one of the things I really like about InfoPop in general.

the quick reply dealy is my favorite.

takes one unnecessary step outta the posting process.

i'd guess not. though i don't agree with it and think its kinda silly, the split since v6 was intentional. infopop is now branching out into several different MB programs.

like my current boards here, ubbdev.com uses classic, but a (somewhat) modded version of it. ubbthreads (ubbdev's sister site) is a (somewhat) modded version of threads.

well, for starters, tho these boards use cgi, threads do not. thats their main benefit -- instead of creating a new cgi file for every member and every thread, they pack all the shiznick into one big ass, data-crunchin mysql database.

that'll change my server's file numbers from roughly 25,000 to roughly 7. it should also ensure things run a little smoother and a lil faster.

to properly move over, i'd have to strip ALL hacks from the boards. wouldn't affect any of you or even the posts, just the way they look.

then, i'd have to import everything, test it out, run around naked, and start remodding stuff.

the ubb.threads license will cost me like $250, and the modding, tho free, will take days (which is why i'm really looking for some good feedback on those threads sites, so i can make sure this is a direction we WANT to go in)

buuut... if the end result is a more stabile, faster rkmbs, with all the fun and love of these, plus new features like dancing bananas, so be it.

I disagree. "That" is a pronoun in the above usage, could also be an adjective or conjunction.
[nyah hah]

Ahhhh, I've been quoted, (feel so special!)

Sorry Adam, Rob and I do not meet, there would be a rip in the Computer-Person continuum.
(But here's a link for ya.)

MySQL is a good idea that they have, but do you trust Powweb to have MySQL running properly on their Apache Servers?

I understand that the "actual" file amount would go a way down (being an old SQL/Oracle guy) but I thought that Powweb looks at the entire MYSQL Device and Database and sifts through for actual relational files thus giving you a total close to what you have now. (Run-on sentence, bad use of gerunds)
Could see the POW pulling some kind of carp like that.
Perhaps Lunar Pages,
Supposedly these guys do not have this gay file limit that Powweb has.
Need to get that in writing though.

Doesn't VBulletin use MySQL also, it is quick on some of the pages I've seen, definitely faster than most UBB Boards.

I thought that the Threads by InfoPOP used the MYSQL backend for power, as well as CGI on the front end for threading and mods, this be incorrect? Me silly with this web programming nuttiness.

Almost forgot, My buddy John Petrucci's forum is pretty slick using phpBB.

But, pretty much the same as INfoPOp I guess.

you could be right. you know more of the coding world than i do -- all of this mysql shizzit is very unfamiliar to me. mebbe you could help with the future hacking of stuff?

i'm beta testing the software now, trying to find out what it can and can't do, how it works on my server, etc.

updates soon, i hope.

Kewl, I'm not sure about the environment, gonna check it out. Could be way better for my board as well.

My services are at your disposal (which is exactly what some clients do with them!) although my coding skillz are not what they were.

And, did I mention that Pow web is carp?

How about an optional Preview Post button instead of it automatically sending us to a preview page?

also, on the UBB code,
code:
[b][/b]

is accepted, where as
code:
[B][/B]

is not. Same with italics.

and if you have a picture in there and you edit it, it posts as <img=> and the picture doesn't show up in the post.

Two things that bug me that are on most message boards(and the preview one) but not the current RKMBs:

Displaying the number of "views" a thread has. It's just so unnecessary, and that bothers me.

Each post within a thread having a subject line. Once again, completely unnecessary. I just prefer clutter like that being gone.

That little shout box (basically a small chat window) on the main page of threadsdev.com is intriguing. You can open it in a separate window as well. I guess on these boards it might just become a home for quick-fire abuse.

If you go to your profile options, there's an option called 'My cookies' and I'm not sure if I've understood this correctly -

Does this mean that the board stores the threads you have visited in your profile so that they load quicker the next time you visit?

This is nothing to do with what your web browser stores right? I'm assuming that your cookies for the threadsdev board are saved on line - Is that right?

I'm lost as hell in that place. I opened a door and I thought I was where I was supposed to be, but it turned out that I wasn't and then a big scary looking guy told me to get out of the ladies bathroom and then I couldn't find the door again and I wound up just wandering around until the janitor saved me. Help!

Rob, you need a board that has a Smite option. People don't take banning seriously anymore.

You need to be able to smite posters who mis-behave on a regular basis...or nuke them or something.
