i've done it before. we've had some attempts. the creation of an entirely web-based magazine ("e-zine"), using these forums as our palette. but the tries were half-assed, and inevitably failed.
so this time, imma try something different. we're goin the old american route: bribery.
the prize: with each and every passing month, i receive an unmarked box from a certain comic book company containing every issue, from every imprint, they release.
i have my favorites, which amount to roughly 15% of the collection. the rest, approximately 50 books, i'll collect or sell or donate -- and now, i'll give away.
thats the prize. whats the pitch?
come up with an article. a column. a review. a game. contests. themes. rants. whatever you want. whatever you can create.
the object: to create something fun. something that generates traffic. something inviting to new members. it must also be at least semi regular: once a week or on-going all the time, something like that. after that, the decision is yours.
tv show review
comic strips
"this week in porn"
fan fictions
dvd reports
"why this celebrity should die"
political rants
WHATEVER YOU DECIDE!
the prizes are distributed by a public vote. every month, we'll select the poster who created the best feature (no one can select their own). first place gets their choice of either 15 specific comic titles, or the rest of "the pile" -- second place gets the unselected prize. ( note: winners pay shipping, which'll be roughly $5)
additionally, all feature contributers will be made moderators of their feature's forum, as well as a few other benefits (crappy stuff.... but free!)
the goal: to maintain a fully functioning ezine, with the aspirations that i will buy promotions and ad spots, raise the site popularity, and eventually make money where and all article writers would be paid.
like i said: bribery. 
questions, comments, suggestions.... lemme know.

damnit. The prize won't matter much to me.
But I'm going to give this a try anyway. That thing about writers getting paid sounds kind of sweet.
Just a random thought: Can I possibly employ all of my ALT IDs to influence that public vote thingie?

even if you're not interested in the specific comic book titles, selling 15-30 comics on ebay, or trading them in at a local comic book store can result in some decent cash.
the writers-getting-paid thing is a ways off, but certainly a possibility. whats needed is high, steady traffic. this board actually already does pretty well, but if i can show a sponsor or an advertiser of sorts a large, constant traffic amount, they'll start forkin over the cash.
as for the alt-ID thing... nossir.

But we only got our shit together last year. And the second issue came out pretty close to the first one, I think. The problem is that we don't have specific deadlines. It should be like an issue a month or something. I have a new comic that's been pretty much done for months, but I kinda forgot about it. I mean, it's simple comics, we can do them pretty quickly, we just need to get organized. And though I'm the one that gave the idea I don't think I'm right for "leader" or "organizer" because I get distracted and ooooh look at the pretty butterfly.

My brother has been trying for quite a while to get his sports website to the point of generating money from advertisors as well and I always wondered if this might be where you were heading as well Rob.
To be honest...I'd love the free comics! What I save at the comic book store could go to silver age comics on e-bay! I'd have to put some thought into it though and I'd have to decide to committ...and I'd have to get excited about it so that excitement would spill over into my work...and it would have to be something that stays fresh week in and week out. Hmmm...how about a weekly play by play commentary of nude Fraternity Brothers wrestling nude Dormitory boys? With lots of soap bubbles of course!

its not that you havta get permission from me on any specific topic, or anything. you should just keep in mind that:
(1) the feature has to be something you enjoy doing/discussing
(2) it should be something a bit "interactive" -- not necessarily something with complete reader interactivity, mind you. but remember, the whole point of this push is to generate and maintain lots of user interest and site traffic. the more newbies you bring in, the larger and more heated the discussions, the better for us.

as an update on my side... actually getting sponsors/advertisers to pay for content is still a ways off -- thats a hard sale. however, an easier sale would be to get free stuff from companies! i.e; if our video game forum starts generating huge traffic, that could turn into developers giving us freebie pre-releases. same is true with comics. girlie magazines. sporting event tickets, etc. all i have to do is convince the company that we're a legit review site with a loyal following, so to them, its like free advertising. all you have to do is get that loyal following!

I'd like to do the novel review, but I don't have a job so I have no money coming in. I could check out books from the library. Would you care if the reviews came out a couple weeks/months after its relaease?

Disco Steve has those nice BAD movie reviews....he could transfer them on the RKMBs.
Velo's got some good rant stuff going on in his site, maybe he could could transfer them here, so that he can delete them and then lie about it later.
I once started a comic strip that stars URG over(I managed to write 4 strips in a coupla hours) at Dave's boards. Unfortunately, things fell through the cracks during the permission granting stage because I couldn't find URG's agent, as he has not yet returned from the weekly Sabertooth tiger hunt. (It's not really that hard to create a comic concept based on the RKMBs, seeing as to how you got a wealth of eccentric - and by "eccentric" I meant "deranged and possibly gay" - posters here. The ALT IDs alone are worth it, and then you also got regulars like Llance, bsams, Nowhereman, TK etc. etc. who have developed some sort of personality by means of their posts alone....

they don't have to be new books -- do reviews of every book you already own. take out old books from grammar school, like chocolate fever (which later became interracial porn). whatever works for you.

i've been scouting around various company sites, trying to find out about sponsorship programs n'such. getting lots of information and feedback about companies that'd be willing to send me (us) free stuff in exchange for formal reviews and guaranteed web presence (traffic).
thats a good thing.

I never thought about Nowhereman actually having a personality...it would make him a little more human and a whole lot less British...and BSAMS says so damn little...tho what he says does speak volumes...and do we actually have a poster named TK? What's his personality like? Psycho? And me? My charming and debonair eloquence does lend a bit of class to the RKMBs but I've always been a bit shy about announcing it to this message board community because I was afraid the lot of you would hit me up for a loan!
Now on to the all important subject of free porno! I'll volenteer some of my internet time and actually go forth into the real world and have sex with prostitutes then come back here and do a twice daily review on that day's two prostitutes. I bet internet traffic will just go through the roof once I begin this review column!
