I think right now the only reason I'm still collecting comics is for DC. I really like what's happening to the universe as a whole. Before Countdown was announced I gave some serious thought to dropping all my titles. I love the characters, but I'm losing the 'passion' for comics. The stuff about Infinite Crisis is keeping that flame lit, so is reading Superman back issues (The Fall of Metropolis was such a fun story). Otherwise, I think I'm done collecting after Infinite Crisis is over.

You can always do what I did, stop buying the monthlies and just buy the TPBs.

I was waiting for a response like that, rex. Monthlies are so expensive now, it almost doesn't seem worth it when you consider cost. If I do quit collecting, I'd save up some cash for classic comics, Elseworlds stuff, and Archives. If I stay at Borders I can get a great discount on trades. Meh...I suppose I'll save money to buy important things too...like dress clothes and stuff.

Its hard to do at first. I got used to that every wednesday comic book run. But you get over it soon enough. Then you realize how much money you're saving and you're reading the stories in a better format.

It happens. About four years ago, I was seriously on the verge of stopping. I was really losing interest. A lot of indie stuff I liked wasn't coming out with any regularity, and a lot of the mainstream stuff I was into had either ended or just wasn't grabbing me.
Then about a year later, things started picking up some and the mainstream books I still collected started getting really good again. And some other books like Planetary slowly started coming out again (emphasis on slowly).
But now, I find myself again becoming more and more indifferent to a lot of the mainstream books out there. The indie stuff I'm into is still grabbing me. Stuff by Eric Powell, Mignola, Guy Davis, Dan Brereton, the Vigils, etc. and most of these guys have books out or on the way right now. So that's keeping me interested. But I dunno.
I feel I'll be dropping a lot of stuff over the next year. But I could be wrong. It may just be a whim.

That's the thing too, I bet I'd have more fun with comics if I wasn't so mainstream! If I had the money I'd check out Watchmen, Sin City, Planetary, etc. But I like my superheroes!

I agree with you, Jers :P When I got up to the cash register last Wednesday (that's my name ) I realized that I was spending as much on about 2 hours worth of reading as I could on 2 or 3 really good novels at half.com. That's a lot more reading and a lot more satisfying. Plus, most comic books don't even change the status quo, so why bother? I'm thinking about reducing my monthly purchases to things like Identity Crisis and such, and authors I REALLY like. By the way, you might wanna consider half.com as a source for TPBs, if that's the route you decide to take.

"Quitting" comics is such a bizarre notion. You can't quit an entire entertainment format. Nobody quits movies, or music. "That's it, I'm not spending my hard earned money on another movie, ever again". You see the ones that interest you, that have interesting premises or are by creators you like. And you don't see the ones that don't grab you. If you don't see a movie for a while, you don't think to yourself that you've just dropped movies. It's just that nothing happens to be out at the moment that interests you, but something might next week. Comics should be the same way.
What you seem to be thinking about doing, Jeremy, is quitting the comics that you've been reading regularly. Which is a far cry from quitting the format entirely.
Thing is- I can’t spell or type. I spell so badly my spell check doesn’t even know what I was trying to spell. And I have five Eisners HAHAHAHHA!!

Been on the verge of dropping for the last year or so myself, comics just arent as satisfying as i used to find them, plus they're a rip compared to other big forms of entertainment like computer games. The DC and Marvel titles that just never change the staus quo like Spider-man, Superman etc... just seem like a complete waste of money, i want to be thrilled and enjoy a story that is unpredictable and may end suprisingly, or change things completely, something you just dont get from big mainstream titles, thats why i've been going to the early days of Image, with unpredictable stuff like WildCATS and Cyberforce
Even if there's something you hear about or miss, you'll probably be able to pick the series or arc up on ebay for a hell of a lot less than cover price

I drop gradually. I'll drop a bunch of titles when I realize I can't afford to pick up so many. I've dropped Baker's Plastic Man about three times now (the last one seems to have taken) all told. Still, there are certain books I've never dropped - Planetary being the big one. I collect arcs, usually, but drop if they don't grab me or aren't worth the funds. Right now, I'm picking up Planetary, Seven Soldiers, and JLA: Classified and that's about it. I can't afford much more. I'm really tempted to pick up OMAC and Villains United, but really haven't made a decision one way or the other yet. We shall see... Quote:

And I'm really enjoying comics, especially superhero ones! HAs the quality got any better - I don't think so but like Jeremy, I just like reading about them!
However, the cost is killing me....and you guys think you pay a lot? Their far more expensive over here - Thanks for nothing Diamond UK Cunts!
As much as it pains me to say it, Danny is right. Buy the comics that hold your interest not out of habit! If comics aren't doing it for you and you need you hero fix, then you are right and should carry on buying back issues! Superman is especially good because a lot of the back issues are quite cheap.
I am Happy to say that Danny is wrong on his first statement, Nowhereman was a big big comics fan - he dropped them all about 4 years ago and hasn't picked one up or a trade since then!
Trades and Marvels HCs are pretty sexy and Borders are thinking about doing those really thick Marvel HCs regularly - they've only done the Ultimate Spidey one so far which I picked up for 20 bucks - that's over 40 issues or material!

Seriously...how does that happen? When I used to manage a Bockbuster someone pulled the same fucking stunt in our public toilet. Both of my CSR's on that day were squeamish little highschool girls so I had to clean that. No word of a lie, there was shit every fucking where: the floor, the walls the door...you name it, if it wasn't the inside of the toilet there was shit all over it.

...a fountain a bum juice...........
First of all, the food at this place was the shits but they would serve you after midnight - which is a pretty amazing thing in the UK!
I was already tanked up on guinness - not something you should do in England either! Guinness is good in most places in Ireland(except Dublin!), so the guiness was playing havoc with my insides already, not helped by the cheapo burger I had gotten earlier to prolong my binge!
I had just wolfed down a phaal - one of the hottest curries, something I would not normally eat as it is a dish designed for white pissheads with no tastebuds and a wanton desire to abuse themselves. I quickly ventured to the bog, no sooner shutting the door, I projectiled vomitted onto the ceiling and into the mirrors above the sinks.
In for a penny, in for a pound! I thought I'd take a dump in the sinks but the guinness had turned my stools into a thick black gravy that shot about 3 feet straight out, again onto the mirrors - no exageration! I then removed my pants to avoid splackback and leapt like lilac leopard on to the sinks and positioned my stench trench at about 50 degree angle and fired, easily hitting the ceiling and the other wall.
I thought it would never end, that English guinness sure is potent for poo juice.
I left the commode and gave the guy a twenty and walked straight out, once outside the door, I ran like a bastard. Within seconds I could hear the screams of horror!
Klinton, if I had to clean up my mess - I would have turned into a sqeamish little highschool girl! It was fun to do but as soon as I finished, I began to have regrets, then I remembered what arseholes these guys were and laughed myself to sleep.
The place has since gone into new management twice - I'm still banned.
Oh yeah, the reason I know I am banned was I was walking near the place a few weeks late during the day and a couple of the waiters ran out screaming blue murder. I think they were trying to embarras me in front of passers by, telling them what I had done! Clearly they didn't really know me too well, as they would have realised how amusing I thought it all was!

Nowhere gave up comics completely, his local comic shop took a giant dump on him after years of loyal buying. Fucker must have had about 10 thousand+
The poo juice story was funny at first, but then it sank in just how utterly disgusting it all was

I've had to trim and trim over the years. If it was 20 years ago, I'd buy Byrne's crappy DOOM PATROL just to keep up with it in my collection. But I cannot afford to put good money toward hackish work.
For that reason, I've lapsed on JSA and Superman/Batman. I am no longer buying any DC.

With the constant price increases and the way they keep publishing comics about things like multiple Supergirls and bringing back Jason Todd, one is probably better off taking a break.
You can quit buying comics and not quit reading the ones you still have. Maybe it's just easier for me because I have so many, and because I have many months of new comics still unread, and about 40 bucks of comics on back order which will eventually arrive (unless they're never published, then they'll send me credit for them).
There is no version of this where you come out on top. Maybe your army comes, and maybe it’s too much for us, but it’s all on you. Because if we can’t protect the Earth, you can be damn well sure we’ll avenge it.

You can quit a medium. You can also not be involved with a medium at all. The majority of people don't read comics. Quite a few people don't read any books at all.
Myself, I stopped watching television for a number of years, due in part to my work schedule and in part to the fact that when I did watch, all I could find was inane crap. Even now, I barely watch television, preferring mostly to watch shows taped by friends (Scrubs, the new Doctor Who, occasionally a West Wing), or Adult Swim's programs, or dvds of something that I already know that I'll enjoy.
So yeah, you can move away from a specific medium. It happens all the time. In fact, I believe business in many cinemas is down, to the current lackluster experience it is in comparison to sitting home and watching a film on dvd for most people.

I've taken breaks from certain titles, but I doubt the day will ever come where I'll drop comics for good.
I have a selective casualness where comics are concerned, that allows me to enjoy certain stories for what they are, as long as they're well written - even if they undo other good stories. And there are quite a few titles that are able to hold my interest as a result. I sometimes get the feeling that fans feel obligated to hate or like certain writers that I don't feel. As long as I like the story, and it works, I won't complain.
There are some changes, however, that I cannot stand (Jason Todd should still be dead, and I don't like what I'm overhearing about Lieberman's treatment of Batman's Rogues.) I also don't like overly convoluted backgrounds that make a title impossible to follow, or ressurections for the sake of resurrections.

I dropped comics AND TV (like Grimm I only watch Adult Swim... and the occasional Sportscenter). I'm still going to The Con, but I don't think I'll buy one book, unless it's something REALLY special.
Essentially, I stopped buying 'cause everything is crap. AND it's mostly filler these days. What good is starting a new series if they're gonna quit and renew it months later? Or retooling characters when the stories are conjecture? bleh.

I've pretty much reached the point where I've decided that comics, or at least the mainstream DC-Marvel books, aren't being written for a guy like me. And the few books I like, or want to try, usually sell out before I can pick them up.
I'm almost to the point where my pull list is going to consist of nothing but [shudder] Wizard, and that's only so I can keep track of what I might want to order in TPB form.

It's thicker and covers more companies (instead of Wizard's Marvel bias).

I gave up comics all throughout graduate school...no time, no money, very young kids, etc.
I got back in in 1992, and it was ho-hum and on-off for me for the next decade.
I got back in earnest with Morrison's NEW X-MEN.
While I'm buying fewer, I'm having more fun with what I do read than I have in 20 years. I'm getting to enjoy them with my oldest daughter and we're in a good run of super-hero cinema.
She's actually finally agreed to check out ULTFF, and has asked for the issues with the first storyarc.
I told her a long time ago, you're not a comic book fan until you've read some FF.

I don't know. I'll have to check it out.

Told me he bought from his shop [crappy little hell-hole that is tiny and stinks] from years on end, buying tons of stuff [literally "tons!"], then when he needed to sell urgently for something, they offered him really shit prices, lower than even someone over ebay would give you, so he quit.
Im cutting down heavily on Marvel/DC annd their ridiculously dragged out stories aswell, buying 6 issues for a blatent 3 issue arc is just tedious. The Indie companies etc... may all charge $3 [something Marvel and DC are already firmly at anyway], but atleast you get some imaginitive and non-de-compressed stories there instead of the same old stuff the big 2 always deliver

Its me and Paris Hilton driving around in a car.... Now I know what you're thinking, but she's in the boot!"
"So you see, 'Ring around the Rosey' refers to the horrible symptoms of a terrifying disease, a disease which.....a disease which....ZIM! Theres a Pigeon on you're head. You have 'Head Pigeons'. get to the Nurse before they spread to the other children."
