Without seeing statistics on the percentage of straight guys who pick up postititues and get AIDS vs the percentage of gay men who use safe sex & aren't promiscous who get AIDS, I really cannot say.
Ultimately, it seems to me that we should be looking at those types of factors and less at assumptions by either side.
