Traiman said adequate safety assurances can be provided by testing a sperm donor at the time of the initial donation, then freezing the sperm for a six-month quarantine and testing the donor again to be sure there is no new sign of HIV or other infectious diseases.

Although there is disagreement over whether the FDA guideline regarding gay men will have the force of law, most doctors and clinics are expected to observe it.

My point there was really that in a relationship you A) are more likely to talk about life-long things like diseases and B ) you are more likely to desire not to spread a deadly virus such as AIDS to the person you are in a relationship with and C) is it more likely you have the oppertunity to find out if your partner has anything (like through blood donations/sample checks) than if you frequently go out for one night stands and order prostitutes.

That said, I didn't really understand your sentance.

I think you misused 'encompass.'

Study: Gay men's brains react differently to scent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- A compound taken from male sweat stimulates the brains of gay men and straight women but not heterosexual men, raising the possibility that homosexual brains are different, researchers in Sweden reported on Monday.

It also strengthens the evidence that humans respond to pheromones -- compounds known to affect animal behavior, especially mating behavior, but whose role in human activity has been questioned.

The pheromone in question is a derivative of testosterone called 4,16-androstadien-3-one, or AND.

"AND is detected primarily in male sweat," the researchers write in this week's issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In a previous study, Ivanka Savic of Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm and colleagues found that the hypothalamus region of the brain became activated when women smelled AND and when men smelled a corresponding compound in female urine called EST.

This time they compared the reactions of 12 women, 12 heterosexual men and 12 homosexual men.

They let them smell EST, AND, and ordinary odors such as lavender, and used positron emission tomography to watch their brain responses.

"In contrast to heterosexual men, and in congruence with heterosexual women, homosexual men displayed hypothalamic activation in response to AND," Savic's team wrote.

And a region of the brain called the anterior hypothalamus responded most strongly -- an area that in animals "is highly involved in sexual behavior".

But other smells were processed the same in all three groups.

"These findings show that our brain reacts differently to the two putative pheromones compared with common odors, and suggest a link between sexual orientation and hypothalamic neuronal processes," Savic's team wrote.

In most animals, pheromone signals go to the hypothalamus region of the brain via a pit-like structure in or near the nose called the vomeronasal organ.

People have a vomeronasal pit but there are no nerves connecting it to the brain, leading biologists to question whether humans respond to pheromones.

Gay, Straight Men's Brain Reaction to Odor Differs

MELVILLE, N.Y. — There are odors that drive a person's sexual response, and scientists have found that homosexual men differ from heterosexual men in the way they respond to such smells. Their brain activity more closely resembles the responses observed in women, new research has shown.

"This is another piece of evidence that the brains of gay and straight people are organized differently," said Simon LeVay, a biologist who almost 15 years ago identified a structural difference in the brains of homosexual and heterosexual men. "It is a fascinating finding, but still doesn't explain the origins of sexual orientation."


The new work, by Ivanka Savic and her colleagues at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, grew out of an earlier finding that brain scans of men and women differed dramatically from each other in response to chemical smells that mimic male and female hormones.

In their latest study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers put gay men into a brain-scanning machine and saw that the region of the anterior hypothalamus became activated when the men were given male sex hormones to smell. Heterosexual men showed more brain activity in this region when smelling odors associated with female hormones.

The smells were made by reconstructing chemicals in male perspiration and female urine that mimic derivatives of testosterone and estrogen.

The brains of the homosexual men showed similar responses to that of heterosexual women when sniffing testosterone. The brains were no different from heterosexual men and women when responding to a nonsexual smell, lavender. The homosexual men reacted to estrogen in the same way they responded to lavender, Savic said.

She says her finding does not suggest that they found a difference in the brain itself, "just that the response is different." Researchers are repeating these studies in homosexual women.

The study shows "that there is a neurobiological difference between gay and straight men," said Sandra Witelson, a neuroscientist at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.

Mayor Takes Leave Over Molestation Charges

SEATTLE — Amid a mushrooming scandal over allegations he molested at least two boys and used city-owned computers and internship offers to solicit sex with young men, the mayor of Spokane, Wash., said Monday he would take a few weeks of leave to prepare a vigorous defense against the charges.

The mayor, James E. West, has not been criminally charged, and he staunchly denies the allegations of two men who say they were molested by West in the late 1970s and early 1980s when he was a sheriff's deputy and Boy Scout leader.


West, a Republican and former state Senate majority leader who had been considered a potential gubernatorial candidate, has acknowledged in recent days that he has had sexual relationships with adult men and that he is working out the issue of his sexuality, which he has variously described as bisexual or gay.

West, who proposed marriage from the floor of the state Senate to his wife, Ginger, in 1990, was divorced after five years.

The swirl of allegations and denials has rocked Spokane, Washington's second-largest city after Seattle, and cast controversy over the local newspaper, the Spokesman-Review, which hired a computer expert to pose as a gay young man on a gay website as part of a sting operation.

The newspaper said it made the move reluctantly and only as part of an attempt to verify an online alias that West was using, it said, to lure young men on dates while dangling offers of perks such as internships, baseball tickets and autographed footballs.

The paper published the molestation allegations Thursday and has continued to report other details in subsequent editions.

West called the paper's editor, Steven A. Smith, early Sunday to adamantly deny a story that he had behaved inappropriately in his office.

The child-abuse allegations against the mayor have sent chills through a city where both a scout leader and a sheriff's deputy — who were friends of West's — killed themselves several years ago amid molestation charges.

In brief remarks to the City Council on Monday announcing his leave, West seemed angry and defiant, and in no mood to accede to widespread calls for his resignation.

"I hope that you and the people will reserve judgment on me until the newspaper is done persecuting me," he said, "and allow me to have the fair opportunity to respond to each of the allegations in due time."

He did not take questions.

Also Monday, city officials took the mayor's computer as part of an investigation into whether it had been improperly used to visit gay Internet sites.

In his phone call to the Spokesman-Review editor, West said he was "being destroyed because I am a gay man."

But no gay rights organization has stepped forward to defend him.

"This man — whether he's straight, bisexual, or gay — deserves nothing but scorn," Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, told Associated Press.

"He needs to resign immediately."

West has been accused of what the Seattle Times calls "the hypocrisy of his stances on gay rights" because he is opposed to a city measure that would extend benefits to same-sex partners, and, as a state legislator, once proposed barring gays and lesbians from working in public schools.

The Seattle Times and the Spokesman-Review have called on West to resign.
