This Sunday is going to be my last day as a part-time Hebrew school teacher. I've been doing it for a year and a half, beginning with taking over for someone for the last few weeks of the year, and after completing a full year of it, I've had enough. I get no respect from the students (they're 6th graders), and since it's only a part-time job, it's more hassle than it's worth.
However, to be fair to the students, another major factor is the fact that I'm working on getting into grad school. I don't know what my schedule will be, and grad school (and a better, regular job) will have to take preference over a part-time job that's nothing but hassles.
So that's it then/ From this day on...I'm Teacher-Man no more (until I teach college, that is)

A distant Aunt and an old friend of mine teach.
My Aunt told me that *50* percent of all teachers are done within the first three years.

It sounds really rough being a teacher. I don't think I could do it. I admire anyone who can.

Hopefully teaching college (if none of my other plans and schemes work out) will be more rewarding.

Darknight, I went to college for a few years, and as I recall, students were MUCH better behaved. Some of them had paid their own tuition themselves, or had earned scholarships, so I believe you'll have a better time teaching 18 thru 22 year olds than you did trying to teach sixth graders.

I'd like to focus on various aspects of pop culture and how they evolve - from heroic myths and legends from different countries to the Hollywood action hero, or the evolution of the Hong Kong kung fu movie (who wouldn't want to take a course where 90% of class time is spent watching kung fu movies?)

Bowling Green State University in NW Ohio actually has a graduate program in Popular Culture. If I knew what you could do with a degree in that, I'd love to take a Ph. D. in pop culture.

I actually got the idea to teach mythology and folklore from a throwaway line from "Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade." While talking about his father to Walter Donovan, Indy says that Grail lore is his father's hobby, and that he's a professor of mythology at a university. I've always been interested in mythology and folklore, and when I saw the movie and heard that line, it was an eye-opener.

How does it feel to be done DK?????? Exhilerating or what? I've just been floating since leaving the school yesterday! Teaching college will totally rock......you'll have kids that WANT to be there and WANT to learn....you can actually fail them if you want to, because there parents have NO SAY over their grades or lifestyle or are founding members of the PTA.....heck I should teach college ;p Quote:

I haven't left my job....just switched schools. As for leaving a teaching job...you have to deal with mouthy, unmotivated kids, parents who look for ways to torture you into giving their kids a good grade (i.e. making up rumors to get a teacher in trouble with the admin, instead of pta it should be the parental gossip association, and administrators who kiss the parent's butt so the kids stay in their school. It's the same regardless of private or public...oh yeah and teachers never, EVER get thanked.......at the Teacher Appreciation Day Party, a parent actually came up to me and said, "So since we threw you this party, does my kid get an A in your math class?"

Man, you teachers REALLY ought to get paid a LOT more! With all the shit you get from kids, and parents, and with kids taking weapons to school these days? They ought to pay teachers more than THREE times what they get now!
