You're right, the Angels didn't - which sucks for us - and I was certain that the game was on tonight - sweet - at least I'll get to see part of it...

Today's game between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles
Angels of Anaheim at Yankee Stadium has been postponed
by the Commissioner's Office due to rain and a forecast
of continuing poor weather conditions.

The game has been rescheduled for Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
at Yankee Stadium.

Fans holding "Home Game 2" tickets for today's game vs.
the Angels must use their tickets for Sunday's rescheduled
game at Yankee Stadium. Only "Home Game 2" tickets will be
honored for Sunday's rescheduled game.

No ticket exchanges will be honored and no part of the
purchase price will be refunded by reason of the failure
of the ticket holder to use his/her ticket on the
rescheduled game date or dates, per the office of the
Commissioner of Baseball.

Sunday's originally scheduled game versus Anaheim at
Angel Stadium of Anaheim has been rescheduled for Monday
in Anaheim (time to be determined). Please continue to

With Washburn too ill to pitch, Lackey gets call

NEW YORK -- John Lackey took over as the Los Angeles Angels' scheduled starter for Game 4 of their AL playoff series against the New York Yankees on Sunday night after teammate Jarrod Washburn got sick.

"Washburn has a throat infection and a fever, and he just will not be able to pitch tonight," Angels spokesman Tim Mead said.

Lackey, a 26-year-old right-hander, was to be pitching on short rest. He started Game 2 in Anaheim on Wednesday night, allowing two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings, walking five and striking out three. He threw 98 pitches.

Bartolo Colon, the Angels' Game 1 starter Tuesday, had been slated to travel back to California on Saturday to get ready for a possible fifth game Monday.


Los Angeles had a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series and was looking to close it out and earn a berth against the Chicago White Sox in the AL Championship Series. Game 4 originally was scheduled for Saturday but was postponed by rain.

Lackey was 14-5 with a 3.44 ERA during the regular season, finishing third in the AL with 199 strikeouts. He made one start on three days' rest, a playoff tuneup at Texas on Sept. 30. He threw five shutout innings and got the win, striking out four and walking one.

Washburn, a 31-year-old left-hander, was 8-8 with a 3.20 ERA during the regular season.

New York's scheduled starter for Game 4 was Shawn Chacon. Mike Mussina remained in California to pitch a possible Game 5.

Randy Johnson just came in with Finley up.....if Johnson can pitch well and hold them at 5 runs the Yankees will win this game. I feel good about that. Johnson just got Finley out.....yanks are up.

I wish I was as optomistic as you are right now...

Yankees had 2 men out and no outs and don't score any runs... but I still feel confident about this game.

My heart says Chicago vs Houston. My head says Chicago vs St. Louis. I think St. Louis may take it all.

I'm torn. The idea of Carl Everett winning a ring turns my stomach. But they haven't won one since 1917. But, on the other hand, Houston hasn't won a World Series, period. And I'd love to see Bagwell, Biggio, et al, win the big one!

i think if the yanks won the series this year, bernie woulda retired. now, i think he'll be back, in a reduced role, at a reduced rate, but definitely a yankee.

i'd prefer not to see damon or papi as a bomber, and the sox'd be pretty silly to lose them.

beltran, on the otherhand, is a possibility, especially if the "what the fuck happened" mets let him go at a "fucked up in '05" fire sale

Ortiz is signed, I believe, through 2007. Don't see him as a Yankee.

If he'd accept the role of 4th outfielder (and I don't think he would), Bernie will stay on with the Yankees as a player. Otherwise, he'll sign with a team that could use a veteran presence for not a ton o' dough. KC? Bernie retires and becomes a coach, a la Luis Sojo? Interesting...

I'd be surprised if they let Matsui go. This series aside, he was one of the cogs who got them into the postseason. He's a Yankee.

Damon and Beltran as Yankees are intriguing. I think the Red Sox will make a run for Damon, but they won't go overboard. So he stands a chance of wearing pinstripes. Or joining the Cubs. I don't see the Mets trading Beltran to the Yankees. What would the Yankees give in return? I think Beltran will either stay a Met or be part of the trade to Boston for Manny.

Speaking of Manny, I wouldn't rule him out as a Met. I see him getting traded for pitching (mostly), and then the Red Sox go after Matsui, Giles, or another outfielder to play behind Ortiz. But I can also see him staying in Boston.

Konerko as a Yankee or Red Sox? Intriguing...both teams could stand to be shored up defensively (and offensively) at first, allowing their sub-par defensive option (Giambi and Ortiz) to DH.

I think both teams will go after AJ Burnett, no matter how bad an idea I think that is. I'd prefer to see one or the other make a run at Millwood, who pitched better than his record.

Thank God both the Yankees and Red Sox are eliminated.

I am tired of baseball being only about them. The defending champs and the team that spends the most are both gone in the first round. Thank Christ.

I am pulling for Chicago and Houston. I will never forgive the Cardinals for laying down and not even trying in the World Series last year. If the Cards do make it they will fold once again under the October pressure just like most of Larussa's teams do. I like Chicago and of course we have The Yankees West (Clemens and Pettite).
