Yeah....It's all just an analogy for the loneliness a closet gay man feels in modern society. The visuals are meant to convey the inner pain someone like Rob feels evertime he looks in the mirror and sees the fun loving little queer he longs to be....instead of the shackled life of lies he feels forced into.
It's all really tragic actually.
