George Clooney, then.

Readers aside, though, I still think the idea is rather goofy. It just doesn't make sense to have a 12-year-old sidekick jumping and swinging across rooftops in a bright-colored costume at night.

In all fairness, teen sidekicks make a heckuva lot more sense than solo teen heroes. Sidekicks have the benefit of training, supervision, and if they get into trouble, their more experienced mentor should be able to help out. If you look at it objectively, Spider-Man makes less sense than Robin. How the heck does a high school kid invent web fluid, web shooters, and his little spider-tracer things, much less make a costume that looks professionally made?

So? Where's he get the MONEY to make all his little toys? It was established that Aunt May always had money troubles, and that most of Peter's income went to helping her out....

But wouldn't that violate the ethics instilled in him by Uncle Ben? And how would the school science lab have FABRIC for his costume?

The key difference between sidekicks and teen heroes, and the thing that makes sidekicks ridiculous, is that teen heroes don't have adults encouraging them to risk their lives.

He made all this stuff before his uncle died, yes? So, there were no ethics apparent at that point. As for fabric - it's called raiding various closets and second-hand/thrift stores...

The costume he would've made before his uncle died, NOT his crime fighting gear....

A Ben Reilly comic established that web fluid can be made with a proper combination of household cleaning products.
Spider-tracers make no sense though.

10 years ago, when I saw Batman Forever in the theaters, I instantly became a comic book fan. Looking back, now, I can see that it has it's major flaws, but I still cherish the film as my "opening" into comics.
Anywho, shortly after I saw the film (a week?), I went to the local grocery store, and while I was there, picked up a nifty little "three pack" of comics including two Detective comics and a Robin (I believe issue 7)...all from the "Knightquest" storyline.
Believe me, I was confused all fuck to hell. "Why isn't Bruce Wayne Batman? Why isn't Dick Grayson Robin? What is going on here?" After reading the two different Detectives, I was just about to give up on my very short lived comic book hobby.
But then I read Robin 7, and boy was Timmy Drake cool. I believe the issue opens up with Tim waking up in the morning in his Robin costume, after fighting crime all night, and ends with Bruce letting Timmy know that all will be well because he will be reclaiming the mantle.
Anywho, that single issue got me hooked, and if it wasn't for Robin, I probably wouldn't be into comics at all.
For that and that alone, I will always say that Robin is a "really goddamn great idea". But that's just me. There could be 20 billion people in the world that left comics because of Robin. Just thought I'd share.

Grimm said: Bullshit. I've heard that standard industry line again and again and I've never bought into that. No kid wants to be the sidekick. They want to be the hero. When I was a kid, I never wanted to be Robin, and neither did any of my friends. We wanted to be the heroes, not the useless, boring sidekicks.
its not that the kid actually is robin, or even wants to become robin. batman is still the cool sunhumma bitch.
robin is just an access point to that character -- the kids eyes and ears to batman.

Haven't posted in a while. I've been caught up in things...
But the only way Robin, and other sidekicks can work for me, is if they're somewhat "reluctant partners".
I can see Cap. America bein' reluctantly assigned to some teenage "super-soldier-serum" science project from higher up the ranks.

Costume aside, I think the Dick Grayson Robin sort of works.
If you think about it, a guy like Batman, who more or less raised himself (with the help of Alfred, who was, let's face it, actually Bruce's employee), is not going to have the most well developed sense of parental responsibility. Like most "parents," he is going to raise a child in more or less the same way he was raised. Which, in his case, meant "as an orphan who trains to fight crime and travels the world fighting crime."
