I think Nolan did alright with the multiple villains in Batman Begins. I'll reserve judgement until I see the completed work. I would think a filmmaker/screenwriter of Nolan's caliber would learn from the mistakes of people like Burton or *shudder* Schumacher.

Agreed, focus needs to be put on the Joker and his (possible) alter ego as the Red Hood. Adding the Penguin could be too much. 'Course I said the same about Scarecrow and Batman Begins didn't suffer. The only thing, I think, that made the movie suffer was Kate Holmes. She's supposed to be coming back for the sequel as well as everyone else (according to Newsarama).
Why, oh why, is Holmes coming back? She was the only bad part of the first flick. I'm amazed that Tom Cruise is letting her out of the cult long enough to even film it.
Not thrilled about Heath being the Joker - I just can't see it, but who knows? He may surprise everyone - though there are so many other actors who I think would've been better suited for the role. Oh well. And I have faith in Nolan, so hopefully having both the Joker and Penguin together won't be as abysmal as the Penguin /Catwoman team-up was in Returns. Finally, Ryan Phillipe as Dent? Oye, who thought that was a good idea?
And yeah, the title is cool.

She has to pay for her indoctrination somehow.

Scientology can't buy a new yatch with kids, Harley. Unless, of course, they turn around and sell them.

i never understood why people got so whiney about her part in 'begins.' was it oscar worthy? no. but, at worst, i found her role unnoticeable. at best, she was just another piece to the pie.

if he's just as aside sorta thing, then i don't mind. i do agree the focus should be on one, the joker.
however, 'begins' was able to tell batman, gordon, ra's, scarecrow, and falcone's story with no problem, because of a proper balance -- some characters getting more treatment than others. it was a good movie, so it could do that.
'returns' through 'b&r' were bad movies (or had elements of bad movies). it wasn't the fault of multiple villains, that was simply an aspect.

with him and phillipe, the "brokeback gotham" trailers can't be too far ...uh... behind.
i have faith in nolan and tone of begins to an enormous extent, so i'll grant the benefit of the doubt. but, just reading the announcement months before cameras even start to roll, i'm annoyed by both of those selections.

If Penguin is a there for a small role, as an arms dealer, with the possibility of an expanded role in the next one, I'm all for it.
But why not get Bob Hoskins? Hoffman is good, but Hoskins would be great.

In my case, I don't think it's whiny to not want her back. I wasn't looking for an Oscar worthy performance, but I also wasn't expecting for her to take me out of the movie as often as she did. I thought they could've gotten someone better for the admittedly small role - not every role requires star power. So my opinion is that they should save the money on her salary unless she absolutely NEEDS to be in the sequel. And, judging by the way the last movie left her character, I don't think she's needed.

I agree with Rob. I don't think the problem is with multiple villains. I think the problem lies in how those villains are used. Focus the sequel on Joker and have Penguin kinda playing in the background, setting up his criminal empire and working almost behind the scenes (maybe having a role in Joker's plots). That way, you've used multiple villains in a way that doesn't bludgeon the viewer or create a campier movie. PLUS, you've also set up your third movie - with Joker defeated, Batman has to turn his attention to Penguin, who has built up his empire and is now a foe to be reckoned with - hell, he could hire a couple of Batman's rogues and that explains why you get multiple villains in the third movie!

My problem with Holmes was script related. No one gave a fuck about that Rachel character. It would have made better sense to cast her as Talia especially with Ra's as the lead baddie. I dig Goyer as a screenwriter but sometimes he slips in some crackrocks while smoking his thunderfunk.

I agree with your point about the Rachel character. I would have skipped the romance angle and used it as an opportunity to set up Harvey Dent

Exactly.
Why is it "whiney" to dislike the actress/character? It's bad enough she's a subpar actress, but the role itself was vanilla and completely superfluous- what was the point of having her there in the first place as an anonymous ADA, when the role could have been used to establish Harvey Dent? What? For the romantic angle? Big, fat, fucking yawn. When is Hollywood going to realize that Batman doesn't need some bullshit romantic angle to make him interesting? If they insist on having a love interest, make it Talia or Catwoman - at least they are characters of substance and not some slapped together, one-dimensional (not to mention badly acted by a fug actress) snooze inducing, disposable character.
That's my prob with Holmes' part in the movie.

I couldn't agree with Dave Mama more. The problem is, when I think of multiple villians, I invariabley think of B&R or Batman Returns or some other schlock and forget that there were many villians in Begins, and yet it was still an excellent movie. I am surprised though, that Talia won't be in the next one, as Ra's did mention he had a child in Begins and it just seemed to be the perfect segue to introduce her in Dark Knight (frickin' the title!).

Agreed fully. The dialogue was way too smart for her acting abilities. The cell phone scene at the manor? Her reaction, timing and all, sucked. Her slapping Bruce? Once was enough, the delayed slap #2 killed me. It was downhill from there with her.

Yes and no. I didn't give a fuck about the Rachel/Bruce romance post-becoming Batman. However I do think she had a level of importance as a childhood friend of Bruce, as well as her DA role.

Williams is famous for his Jack Nicholson impression, but he suspects Nolan would be looking for a new take. "Well, you want to do a different Joker. You know, if they do Arkham Asylum, it would be amazing. Arkham Asylum is one of the greatest, nastiest comic books ever. It's truly, it's like the Marquee de Sade on that level, and wonderfully damaged and quite tragic, in terms of when you realize [what happened to] create these characters..."

...fuck. I had no idea Robin Williams even LIKED comic books, much less could have educated thoughts on things like this. I'm not neccessarily for him being cast. But, this at least makes it a bit less scary of an idea...
it definitely makes it less scary but if they want to do it right there is only one guy for the job.....Mark Hamill.
I've heard this a lot, and it seems to me that everyone always forgets that just because Hamill has a great Joker voice for animation, that doesn't necessarily translate very well to an actual live performance.
Going on his portrayal of the Trickster in the Flash tv series. I'd say he was pretty much perfect for the role!

Ledger On Joker, Hoskins On Penguin The Toronto Sun recently spoke with Aussie actor Heath Ledger who for the first time talked publically about his being cast as The Joker in the "Batman Begins" sequel "The Dark Knight".
"It's definitely going to stump people. I think it'll be more along the lines of how the Joker was meant to be in the comics, darker and more sinister. I wouldn't have thought of me, either. But it's obviously not going to be what Jack Nicholson did" says Ledger.
He adds "It's going to be more nuanced and dark and more along the lines of a Clockwork Orange kind of feel. Which is, I think, what the comic book was after: less about his laugh and more about his eyes".
Meanwhile at the premiere of "Hollywoodland", actor Bob Hoskins was asked by IESB about rumours he'd been approached to play The Penguin in "The Dark Knight". Hoskins seemed genuinely surprised by the question and appeared not to have heard of such an offer. Would he be interested? "Yeah of course...love too" he replied..."

Hoskins would be great as the Penguin. Who (else) is up for that role?
Dear, sweet Harley Kwink...I'm madly in love with you. Marry me! We can go to Canadia. Or Boston or something. It'll be grand...You know the cookies are a given. They are ALWAYS a given. You could dump me tomorrow and you'd still get the cookies. Boston..shit, wherever dyke weddings were legalized. And where better to rub their little piggie noses in how bad they suck than right on their doorstep? What are they gonna do? Be jealous of you? Stare furiously at your tah-tahs? Not willingly give you cookies, but instead begrudgingly give you their cookies? Woman, time to wake up to the powers you wield - Uschi

They keep mentioning Phillip Seymour Hoffman, but for my money NO ONE tops Hoskins as a choice. In fact, I thought that back when DiVito got the part in "Batman Returns."

Hoskins is a superb actor. He was originally supposed to have the role that De Niro had in The Untouchables.

Yep. In fact, I've heard that they actually starting filming with Hoskins and then went back and reshot some scenes after DeNiro changed his mind and agreed to do the film.
