sega has just officially announced its console demise, which i think is truly unfortunate. i think sega did a great job with their dreamcast, marketing, games, etc. their only problem is the hype (and hype alone) of play station 2.

still, i can't wait for them to get a chance to focus on making just games. at that point, they'd become a powerhouse in that department. so far, they've committed to creating game boy advance games, and, i think that after nintendo releases their final gamecube details at e3 in a few months, we'll find sega support there, too. wuhoo!

Damn, I was hoping Sonic would be out of work! But I guess we can't get a break.

Yeah, Sega discontinuing a platform...what were the odds on that?

After the Heat.net debacle, I decided sega wouldn't recieve a dime of my cash.

I remember reading that the dreamcast was going to be Sega's last hardware back whenit first came out. And they are still going to develop software for Dreamcast, too.

I think what they are doing is actually smart (from a buisness sense).

sega has great ideas... just doesnt execute them well. the dreamcast is a great system... even when being compared to play station 2. but, ps2's hype was just way too far against sega for them to survive. pretty unfortunate.

i agree with you, stephanie (welcome, btw!)... this is definitely a good switch for them.

Game Developers don't dump money into a dead platform.
Sega doesn't support an obsolete platform for very long either, judging from their 'support' of the master system, genesis,or saturn. Once the games in development are released, we'll see just how much they support it.

Sega also suddenly closed it's online gaming host, heat.net in october, and sold it's components to competitors, leaving many of the paying customers shit out of luck.
Thier official response was 'sorry'.

The reasons cited? So they could focus on the Dreamcast and continue development.
'Continue development' doesn't mean 'make new games'.

Fuck Sega.

When I was growing up, my Sega Genesis was my best friend. Pretty said, huh?

Even though I probably would have gotten more female attention if I hadn't focused so much on beating Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, but I still think it was a damn good system, Sure the 32X and Saturn were flops, but the little Dreamcast I have played has been pretty good.

Now that the Dreamcast is dirt cheap, I plan to picj one up. All I need is a Game Gear and I'll have all the US systems.

im pretty much name-brand loyal (a name-brand bitch, if you will). coke over pepsi, mcdonalds over burger king, nintendo over sega. always have been, always will be.

but, i always saw at least a little potential in sega. they just seem to have nothing but bad timing. that, and perhaps a little bad luck. i dunno, maybe its just poor advertising. whatever it is, it always seems like they're missing something.

genesis was the first (big) 16 bit system, but never came close to nintendo's. sega cd was this ultimate, graphics machine... the first (big... no turbo grafix) system to utlize the cool new medium of cd's. that died too. game gear was crushed by game boy, 32 was just lost in the system...

dreamcast was probably their best release ever. cool commercials and ad campaign, far superior to existing systems and game graphics, all new tech... but even that didnt last.

to lifetime-movie-it, its like sega was the little brother that kept f'ing up, trying to live up to their big brother nintendo's standards.

their new decision to produce just games is most likely a good one. it allows them to REALLY focus on one thing, something they've always been pretty good at doing, and now has the potential to become better still. i think the better decision would be to for them to become part of nintendo, which would merge all their great ideas and potential for games, systems, and adaptors, with a company that could actually deliver (all be it with 2-3 delays) like nintendo.

but, all things, i think their current move, tho filled with a lot of negatives, is the best for them.

Gotta disagree man. I still think Genesis was the top 16-bit box.
