I'm 53-37 going into November.

Anybody else keeping track?

I thought TK was keeping track. I have no idea how I'm doing, but I am curious to know.

hey quick question. Coult we do the records based on win%? Cause ive seen that theres some folks(such as myself) that haven't been able to pick consistantly week in and week out. In fact i think Jim is the only one keeping the pace. Anyways i just did my own tally and found that im floating at .500 with a 21-21 record

News and Rumours

Quote:

A source with the USC Trojans confirmed that Green Bay has been scouting quarterback Matt Leinart – somewhat of a surprise considering it chose Cal's Aaron Rodgers in the first round of the 2005 draft. Should the 1-6 Packers end up with the No. 1 pick in next year's draft, conventional wisdom suggests the team would take a hard look at USC tailback Reggie Bush. But they have apparently been showing interest in Leinart, too.

That doesn't necessarily mean the Packers aren't happy with Rodgers, who has appeared to be further from starting than initially hoped. Many teams do their due diligence with top-rated players, even when they are stocked at a position. And with Leinart being considered a "franchise" quarterback, the No. 1 pick is expected to have plenty of value for trade. However, one NFC personnel source said he wouldn't be surprised if the Packers are legitimately interested in Leinart.

"He would have been taken (over Alex Smith)," he said of Leinart. "Who knows exactly what they've seen from Rodgers since he's gotten in there. I don't think anyone would have told you Rodgers had a better grade than Leinart going into the (2005) draft. Maybe they are interested in Leinart. I know this: If I thought one player was far better than another, especially at quarterback, I would take a long, long look at it. But considering they just spent a first-round pick on Rodgers and will have a year invested in him, they would have to think there's a huge disparity."

Quote:

Giants cornerback Will Allen is likely on his way out of New York. He's slated to become a free agent after the season, and coach Tom Coughlin continues to be disappointed that his cornerbacks haven't been bigger playmakers. Allen has recorded only one interception in his last 29 games, and that's not what the Giants were expecting from their highest paid cornerback (Allen is making $2.275 million this season).

Quote:

Return specialist Eddie Drummond's hopes of netting himself a lucrative, long-term deal from the Detroit Lions this season seem to be fading fast. One of the NFL's most electrifying return men last season, Drummond missed five games in 2004 and has once again been slowed by injuries. In five games this season, Drummond has averaged 3.9 yards per punt return and 20.3 yards per kick return, and he has no touchdowns – numbers far below the league's best returners.

Quote:

With wide receiver Bobby Engram slated to return to the Seattle Seahawks possibly as early as this week – and hopes that Darrell Jackson will come back from his knee injury by the end of November – Seahawks coaches think the early spate of injuries could be good for their team in the long run.

The loss of Engram and Jackson forced quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to develop better rapport with wideout Joe Jurevicius and tight end Jerramy Stevens, who have both stepped up their play in the last three weeks Should Jackson return, the Seahawks would have their most potent set of offensive weapons since Mike Holmgren arrived in Seattle.

Quote:

Talk in league circles persists that Chad Pennington's shoulder issues may end up sidelining him for much of next season, and that the New York Jets will explore every available option at the position this offseason – including drafting another quarterback or trading for a veteran starter.

It would be an interesting position for the Packers to get the #1 and have Leinart waiting for them. Or Reggie Bush. Frankly, they could use both guys. NFL coaches are notoriously egotistical, and I doubt that Mike Sherman's any different. A selection of Leinart can be viewed as them having wasted their #1 in '05 on Rodgers. A selection of Reggie Bush does not bring the same kind of criticism. Thus, I think the Packers are more likely to take Bush than Leinart. I add as further support the very real possibility that Bret Favre does not retire after this year. I cannot imagine the competitor that Bret is wanting his last season in the NFL to be the current one. His Hall of Fame status will not be damaged by an awful 2005, but I still can't see Bret choosing to leave and having 2005 in the history books as his last year. I believe John Madden on Monday night said that he can't imagine Favre letting this season stand as his last.

I say Favre does come back and if they end up with the #1, they take Bush. Or someone other than Leinart.

In my opinion, Houston and Minnesota are looking a lot worse than the Pack. And I'm sure either one of them will have the Numero Uno pick at the end of the season.

I took a lot of road teams, but in many of these matchups, the road teams coming in are the better team. I was reluctant to take NO over Chicago and Minnesota over Detroit, but I can't pick all road teams. I read today that Joey starts against Minnesota, and I think Brad Johnson may be enough of spark to let the Vikes win this one.

I also think the Colts have enough to finally get over the Patriot hump on Monday night.

I'm 8-5 going into tonight's game. I should have gone with my gut and taken the road teams I wanted to take (the Raiders play better D in the final seconds and the Chiefs only get a shot at a field goal).

I think the Colts have enough weapons on both sides to take advantage of New England's injuries to win. I think the Pats keep it close but the Colts win by at least 7.

Oh, for you Bengal fans...the Colts-Bengals tilt at PBS on Nov. 20 has been moved to the afternoon slot on CBS and will be the game most of the nation gets in that timeslot.

Here're the bottom rungs of the NFL ladder...

1-7
They'll have the Number One pick.
I say about four, maybe five wins. If lightning doesn't strike Favre.

2-6
Trade Pennington, invest in running and defensive backs in the Draft. Probably the Number Two pick.
Get rid of Boller. Stick with Wright or Stewart (even though we all known he's gone by the end of this week. Retards...)
I don't know where to begin...
Ditto.

2-7
Keep Volek and hold on tight. This may be McNair's last year. They need a speed wideout. Henry was a BAD pickup.
How fucked are they?! They're essentially playing for no one. They barely have a crowd these days. The Saints are much better than they've played.

Just as a tally...I was 9-5 for this weekend, leaving me 62-42 overall. That's a 59.6% clip.

The Bengals have the bye this weekend.

Here's some fodder for discussion.

Coach of the Year: Marvin Lewis

NFL MVP: Carson Palmer. The Bengals are not 7-2 without him regardless of their turnover margin.

If Carson does indeed win the MVP, he would be the 3rd Bengal to do so. Ken Anderson, QB, won it in 1981. Boomer Esiason, QB, won it in 1988.

The Lions need to trade Roy Williams. Now. Can they get anything for him, like a first round pick in the next draft?

Well, what about after the season? Would someone give up a first round draft pick for him. I think the Lions should also dump Charles Rogers for a first round pick. Maybe even Kevin Jones, although at least he's actually gone out there injured and put it on the line. Okay, so trading Jones might look one-sided, but Pinner and Bryson have been solid, and together could team up behind a solid offensive line to establish a solid running game.

My thinking is if they can get enough first round picks for some of their dead weight (to them, maybe not to someone else) now, they can use all of them on offensive linemen. The more offensive linemen they can pick up in the next draft (and I'm talking solid playes), the better their chances of putting together a group that can actually protect their quarterbacks next season, giving them time to actually get the ball to Mike Williams and Scotty Vines. DOWNFIELD!!!!!!

Looking at the last game, Harrington fumbled and was intercepted in the first half. Both plays led to touchdowns for Minnesota. However, excluding those screw ups, Harrington had one of his best games ever. He showed he belonged. Imagine if he would have actually had protection from a competent offensive line. I say keep all three quarterbacks next year, and get them behind a real offensive line.

Of course, they'll probably need a new coach, but that might be the easiest piece to replace.

I have a feeling that before Rogers or Williams is traded, the Lions will want to see how productive the entire offense would be under a new, younger QB. As much as I liked Joey in college, it has been a disaster for him in Detroit.

A couple of points:

--Jim might be right about Palmer.

--No one will take Pennington until they see how his surgically-repaired shoulder (twice!) holds up.

--a first-round pick for weedsmokin' Rogers?! Maybe a fifth or sixth...

Agreed on Pennington. He'll be with the Jets for the time being. In fact, I can't imagine anyone trading for him. If his shoulder's repaired..really repaired, then he'll stay with the Jets. If it's not, then he won't start (or he'll be cut outright). And no one will trade for him in that event because they will know it's because of his shoulder.

My frontrunners for MVP:

--Steve Smith (WR) and Delhomme (QB), Carolina

--James (RB), Indy--leading rusher on the only perfect team

--Palmer (QB), Cincy--having a fantastic year

What's your take, Jim?

I like most of the guys you mentioned.

Palmer, Steve Smith (though I can't imgaine a wideout winning MVP for a season, but he's clearly the best thing going in the decidedly weak NFC), but instead of Edge, I'd probably nominate Peyton Manning from that Colts team. His performance against his old nemesis Patriots on MNF did him a world of good in the MVP race.

Tantalizingly enough, the Nov. 20 game in Cincinnati between the Colts and Bengals may provide sufficient separation between Manning and Palmer. Also, a lot hinges for Palmer on how the Bengals play in Pittsburgh later in the season.

And that's why Detroit won't get anywhere. I think we've all seen enough. They are useless right now because the offensive won't allow the quarterback the time he needs to hit them. That being the case, get some first round picks and build a friggin line. A new coach and another quarteback won't get the job done next season with the line the way it is. And what they need to do to fix it will require a lot more than one first round draft pick spent on a left tackle.

No doubt, Detroit has more than just one or two problems to address.

The way you're feeling now is how Bengal fans felt for, oh, most of the 1990s. I know that's no comfort...

Did the Bengals try to build an explosive offense by drafting a quarterback and three wide recievers in four consecutive years with their first round picks before drafting and building a solid offensive line?

Part of how and what you draft is dependent upon your philosophies and upon the level of talent that's available to you when it's your turn to select a player.

I would love the niners to take up Roy williams for ya...even though we dont have a QB to get him the ball...or a line to give that QB some time...or a running back to eat up clock to keep our good buy tiring defense off the field.

Kansas City at Buffalo I'm not sold on the Chiefs.

Sunday Night Football: Cleveland at Pittsburgh but I'll be MORE than happy with a Browns win.
