Why exactly does Bush WANT to drive up the price of oil?

The main argument against Bush, of course, is that he diverted money away from the real issues and that he should have focused more money on natural disaster. If, in the last 2-3 years, he did just that that and, by some miracle, managed to upgrade the levees way ahead of schedule, and yeat they still broke....Would people still be pissed at Bush? From your outline of the south coast's frequent hurricane problem, it's obvious that weather should be a concern by the government at some point. However, lets say it happened now and before, under Bush's jurisdiction, and New Orleans was reinforced to the brink, but they still suffer a flood. That's a ruined city + billions down the drain. Are people gonna say, "Bush did the best he could" or "He didn't work hard enough"--And just a reminder: Even if Bush worked as hard as he could to fortify before the hurricane, there's no way he would have finished in time for all of those hurricanes.

We had Fathers Day here on Sunday, and we were talking about New Orleans. My sister's father in law said he has been to Orleans, and that outside of the French Quarter much of it is a dump, with 30% unemployment. So we have a city with a poor population, resorting to violence to survive. When 9/11 happened, New Yorkers all responded sensibly and with great patience and humanity towards each other. But then, I'm guessing New York is a much more affluent city. People in New Orleans are used to getting by in a very rough and tumble way, I'm guessing. And poor cities don't have funds to build storm water dams. They're generally too busy getting unemployment and crime down. Quote:

Would people still be mad at Bush? Yup. There are people out there who will search for any excuse to blame anything they can on Bush, realistic or no. There are also people out there who will search for any excuse to pardon the man, no matter what he does (or does not). That's politics.
Also, people have other reasons to be mad at Bush right now. The structural integrity of the levees is only one argument against him, not the whole.
But if this had happened eight years ago, the same people who are admonishing liberals for politicizing this thing would be jumping on Clinton like a five-dollar whore. And, when I think about it, when it comes to politicizing, I think the people who are jumping to Bush's defense are just as "bad" as the people on the offense.

Dave, China needs the oil and Bush and his ilk are taking full advantage of that fact and every other plausible reason to give their oil companies RECORD profits. Wake up and smell the burning BUSH people. It's your ass he's burning!
Pariah-you're much like that turd floating around New Orleans that people keep slogging through. Just a bunch of useless shit getting in people's way! My main complaint is that George took until Friday to get some help down to New Orleans. Bottom line it people -he's our President! His reaction should have been immediate! If a disaster of that magnitude happened in my area of the country I damn well would expect major help within 24 hours or less! Wouldn't you? If you don't then you're a bigger fool than I thought.

Not to the point that they are leaving people in dire straits. I don't blame anybody or any company making an honest profit...but not to the point that people are scared that the price of gas will lead to rationing or even self imposed cut backs on personal driving. Or to the point that purchasing gas is now a very big part of figuring the family budget. It's ludicrous people. Believe me Bush and his Saudi friends are laughing at those of you who are defending Bush as they sip on their champagne and eat their caviar! The idiot's on TV now working so hard to salvage his own image it makes me want to hurl! I honestly believe the idiot should be impeached for his lack of leadership during this crisis!

What? You don't think Bush is pushing gas prices up all over the world? I assure you Nowhereman that he is.
The Global community is at that idiot's mercy! I just hope he resigns or is impeached. Wasn't it his idea to marry Homeland Security and FEMA together? Fema had a perfect track record...until Katrina! I kept thinking it would be ironic if one of the snipers would take a shot at his candy ass out during his "let's rebuild the Bush image" good will tour this past week. I would not wish death on anyone but maybe it would shake his ass up to where he would really put the people's interests first instead of his own.

Bush has fuck all to do with our prices. They were high long before he came to power, and they will be high when he is dead & gone!
Its down to our own government putting massive tax on fuel, not a US president or anyone else for that matter!
What you fail to realise is,we earn a smaller wage than the US,on average, but just about everything costs more here! All that is down to a government that just keeps pushing taxes high & higher. This has been the story for all my life so I dont really see how the current president is implicit in this!

The Associated Press reports that Senate Majority leader Bill Frist, Republican, and a doctor, has gone down to Louisiana for the weekend to treat hurricane victims: The senator spent the day treating diabetics for low blood sugar and dealing with cases of high blood pressure and dehydration. Though he is a surgeon by training, there was no need to perform surgery on Saturday, he said. After overnighting in Nashville, Tenn., following his day in New Orleans, Frist planned to return to the Gulf Coast on Sunday to work in storm-ravaged areas of Mississippi and Alabama, as well as returning with supplies to New Orleans. Meanwhile, Frist's fellow politician/physician, Democrat Party Chair Howard Dean is issuing press releases attacking Frist for his position on the estate tax.

It's not just about funding being cut over the years. It seems like it was common knowledge that the levis couldn't handle a storm like Katrina. So for me the question is, why did it take so long to mobolize help? I think it's important to start addressing what happened now because obviously the government dropped the ball. Some of those people may still be calling the shots. If so, they need to be moved to the side so that other more capable people can do what needs getting done.

ok, lemme take a crack at this. i'll start with some of the theories dave already brought up.
Quote:
First Amongst Daves said:
the initial help went to whites.
i've heard that a few times, in various formats. first help went to whites, blacks were ignored, if they were whites help would have come immediately, etc. i think they're all pretty silly comments.
the race card gets so over played that it really belittles actual race issues, which i believe did not come into play here at all. sorry kanye.
however, i do believe money comes into play here. the haves and the have nots are still the have and have nots -- the poorer folk had a harder time and will have a harder time.
whether thats because they were in a harder-to-get-to area because it was so cramped or overly destroyed, or because the area they were in was of lower quality and had less protection, or because they didn't have the money or transportation to get out, etc. those are all valid factors. hell, i'll even accept more "unfriendly" answers as possibilities, like poor people are harder to deal with or easier not to care as much about. and, in that region of the world, maybe that is mostly black people.
im sure most well-to-do black businessman or manager or politician or celebrity or athelete or whatever did just as well in getting out/aid as their white counterparts.
this isn't a race issue.
Quote:
First Amongst Daves said:
the help overall was too slow -- Sometimes governments seemed to underestimate the severity of natural disasters.
aye.
the fed reaction was really 24 hours past "passable." i don't blame dubya for that, but he does have to take responsibility for it.
there are two parts involved here; local and national. nationally, i think the biggest issue is beaurocracy. they just have too much shit to do and too many things to keep track of and too many people doing nothing about it. everything is a 4 hour conference or two weeks of paperwork. thats not a recent "this admin" issue, either. though, certainly, this admin's "homeland security" is really a big component. what was set up to help streamline has really, seemingly, done nothing but backup.
locally is the other major issue. a lot of the city and state planning, preperation, prevention, and contingencies has to come from the governor or the mayors. whether thats making sure the levee development and updates is going well, or assuming the many contingencies like if the back pumps are working or bus routes for escape, etc. it is a threat for that region almost every day.
Quote:
First Amongst Daves said:
Bush flew in for a few hours, said a few words in front of cameras, then flew out by helicopter to the comfort of the White House.
bad PR, i guess. he's since made a buncha speeches and whatever, and had a buncha moments with the people, so i assume he's spent a lot more time there, which is good.
Quote:
First Amongst Daves said:
the anti-flooding system which might have saved N.O. was underfunded by Federal agencies, as part of a general cutback
mostly, i think this is just day-after finger pointing. there is some merit to the claims, but... none would fall squarely on dubya.
its partially dubya, clinton, bush: 1, and any number of presidents and/or politicians who faltered in finalizing these ongoing plans. its partially the construction crews who dished out the billion dollar bills for the tasks. its also partially the planners who couldn't think of any way cheaper, faster, or easier to handle the problem.
Quote:
Logic said:
man vs. nature, nature wins.
then, of course, there's the notion that you simply can not beat nature, no matter how hard you try. a 70 foot wall wont stop a 72 foot wave, nor would a 80 foot wall stop a 82 foot wave.
this was a muther fucker of a hurricane, providing a direct hit to a sensitive area. no president, planner, crewman, or individual is to blame for that.
the big issue now is the reaction. so far, support from regular joes has been phenomenal. soldiers, doctors, and dozens of organizations are also really stepping up enormously for direct support. nearby towns and cities, and even those hundreds of miles away, are helping out with food, clothes, even homes and schools and jobs.
plans are being set in place to drain the waters out, and even begin the long rebuilding process. we'll have to weigh in later on those, as well as the push to help reduce "katrina 2's" devastation
