Read it when it first came out. (I was reading on a 12th grade level by the time I was 5. Aren't I special. ) I thought it was a great story then and I still do now.

Priceless.

Kinda like Jason Todd.

Don't get me started on him. Bringing Jason back from the dead, even toying with the idea, just felt...wrong to me. It's such a cop-out, not to mention stale writing. Sure, there are a lot of "dead Jason" stories, but dammit, it's just realistic for heroes to die and stay dead (Well, it would be if that were an actual standard in comics). Especially a hotheaded thirteen year old human boy (superpowers make a difference) who fought crime with little more than his fists and his wits. Jason was a reminder that no one is infallible, and no one always makes the right decisions. That's what I thought Jason's legacy meant to Batman (which, of course, would only serve to make him even more driven) until Judd messed it up with his fanfic nightmare come to life.

On that note, I owe Judd Winick a beatdown. We don't care if you're a JT fan, Judd, he was unlikable in the first place.

Well, not in the "first" place. Ironically enough, Pre-Crisis "Dick Grayson clone" Jason Todd I kinda liked. I always saw him as a bit of a naive goof, but he respected the legacies of Batman and Nightwing (who he realized was his predecessor), as opposed to the snot-nosed "I'm better than Batman" punk we got Post-Crisis.

I just had a thought: DC has been telling us that a major character would bite it and be replaced.

Could DC actually be thinking of offing the "modern age" Superman and replacing him with a golden age Superman?

I'm not sure it takes that much in the line of balls.

You come up with some sort of psuedo scientific, psuedo mystic explanation for why either (a) the de-age him and Lois or (b) why the public accepts Clark and Lois were suddenly aged.

The general public still has a Superman who lives in Metropolis, calls himself Clark Kent, hangs out with Lois, etc.

I actually think it takes less balls than replacing Batman or Wonder Woman with Robin or Donna Troy, which are other theorized plot points.

As noted above, in my scenario you don't change much but the age of the character.

I think it would take more balls. Because even though it's the "original" character, DC and several people within the company have long been averse to the notion of a "super grandpa" to use their term. They've mocked the notion for some time now.

With characters like Robin and/or Donna Troy, having them replace their mentors is merely the ultimate function of the unspoken promise of those characters. To eventually replace their mentors.

I think it's really sad in many ways that Wally West is the only sidekick to "grow up" and replace his mentor.

I'm prolly gonna get flamed for bringing politics into this, but I just think it's funny how much writers like Chuck Austen, Greg Rucka, Geoff Johns, and Judd Winick are going out of their way to redefine these characters. It's kinda obvious how they're leaning towards replacing them and have been avoiding the most blatant points about the characters that make them even partially conservative. I think that's one of the reasons why Batman has been so terrible; the book's been less about standing up and doing something in a corrupt society (or even about psycho-drama or that matter) and more about family matters and polarizing archetypes (the Joker to name a name). And because they're not in their rounded elements, they're all going to keep sucking as the writer's try to make the liberal aspects of them uncharacteristically huge. If we look at the big three's protege's, however, we'd see how much more in character it is for them. Such a dramatic switch wouldn't make sense, but it also wouldn't be above them--And it would also make the comic environment more coordinated to their Liberal views.

How many of you went into your fathers' business?

Thought so.

It's not that common any more (but it does happen). But, for some reason, fanboys get giddy at the idea of every teen sidekick growing up and taking over the family business.

James Robinson did the concept to near perfection in "Starman." Waid and Johns have done a decent job with the Flash.

Let's not over do it.

Bruce Wayne. Sees his parents murdered. Grow up to be obsessed with fighting crime.

It's perfect in its simplicity. It establishes the motive, the theme, everything a good story needs.

Why fuck with that, simply to please aging fanboys who don't care about a new generation of readers.

It's not a family business. It's a job that they're trained to do from an early age. And they all continue to do it. But because of the ridiculous notion of "compressed time," the sidekicks slowly age while the mentors stay the same age forever. So your analogy doesn't work.

which character? which Bruce Wayne? which Batman? in sixty plus years of constant publication the character's always changed. yes, it works. but if you're going to evolve the characters over a period of time as DC has half assed done since the Crisis, then eventually he's going to have to stop and go away.

Otherwise, it's just going to lead to another reboot. Which works also.

You have this backwards. It's the aging fanboys who are served by lack of progression, not new readers. New readers are served by new characters, new storylines, new concepts that are closer in tune to their realities (such as the Ultimate line).

Dick Grayson isn't a new character. Neither is Batman. But Dick Grayson AS Batman is a "new" character with lots of room for exploration and growth. You see?

Dick Grayson has a similar background, accepting only that he was taken under the wing of someone who was already doing something about it. Honestly, Dick has as much motive for fighting crime as the Bat.

This is the reason that I don't see anyone else being Batman - unlike Dick Grayson or any of the Robins that followed, Bruce was a complete loner and his whole purpose in life was to see justice in the name of the memory of his parents. All the other Robins (save annoying post-crisis Jason) had friends and lives outside of the mask. Bruce Wayne is the mask. No one else has the same drive as he does to take over - and bothe Dick and Tim have even stated as much over the years.

Donna (and even annoying Cassie) are kinda mini-WW, and as far as I know they - or at least Cassie - who the hell knows what's going on with Donna - seem to be groomed to take over as WW so I can sorta give some credibility to the rumor that WW might be replaced after IC. IIRC, Cassie asked Zeus to make her WG bc. she eventually wanted to be just like WW - so it just seems that it would be the natural progression for her to be WW even if Donna doesn't want it...

Yeah, motive maybe, but I think there more to it than that - its the difference between how Bruce views the role and how Dick views the role of Batman. Dick has a life outside of the mask, Bruce doesn't. Just different approaches. Go back and read Prodigal when Dick was Batman for a few months and youcan see that he didn't even want to be batman - it was too dark a role for him to play.
