'House of M' and 'Decimation' Downsize the Marvel Universe
icv2.com

During a conference call discussing the post-House of M/Decimation event, Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada made no bones about the fact that he was happy that the result of this major Marvel event would be a drastic reduction in the number of mutants in the Marvel Universe. Quesada declared that he had placed a "moratorium" on the creation of new mutants (with the possible exception of a handful of new characters that were part of the House of M event and its immediate aftermath). Quesada also rejected the idea that mutants who bit the dust during the House of M and Decimation would be returning, stating unequivocally: "As long as I am EIC I am not bringing any of these
    (characters) back."

When asked by retailer Phil Boyle of Coliseum Comics if the entire House of M / Decimation event wasn't some sort of excuse to create more "X" books and further dilute the franchise, Quesada agreed that there had been too many mutants and too many X-books in the Marvel Universe. He noted that one of the elements that made the Marvel mutant characters psychologically compelling was the fact that they were part of a tiny, persecuted minority. The idea behind House of M and Decimation is to scale back the number and role of mutants in the current Marvel Universe to something similar to the Silver Age Marvel Universe. Quesada also noted that poor performing X-titles such as Nightcrawler and District X had been cancelled and that the purpose of the new approach to mutants in the Marvel Universe was to make the X-books more compelling and meaningful.

When queried about potential fan fatigue from too many "events" such as House of M, Spider-Man: The Other, and DC's Infinite Crisis, Quesada replied that it was definitely a concern, but that fans appeared to be voting in favor of "event" titles with their pocketbooks. He noted that Spider-Man: The Other was confined to just three Spider-Man titles and he maintained that Marvel did not try to prop up low-selling titles by making them key parts of crossover events. He also pointed out that the effects of the 95% reduction in the number of mutants in the Marvel Universe would be reflected through the line -- Wolverine will be the only mutant in The New Avengers and all the X-books, including Joss Whedon's popular Astonishing X-Men, will be affected by the House of M / Decimation events.

Bullshit. You're (actually, Joe is) talking about a fandom that, in general, is completist in their buying habits. If you have the main book - House Of M, for example - where much of what happens goes on off-screen (in the crossover books), then many/most fans will buy these spin-offs. Were the Hulk issues REALLY necessary? Did the Black Panther issues enhance the story that much? What about the other spin-off miniseries and/or tie-ins? The fact is that Joe and Marvel manufactured a need.

As for "The Other"...sure, it's confined to "just" the THREE Spider-Man titles. Funny that one of them has just started up, eh? Funny how the numbering of each chapter forces the reader to buy all three is s/he wants to understand what the fuck is going on. I'd love to buy the new David/Wieringo book, but I'm damned if I'm buying the other chapters. Which means I either bite the bullet and buy books I won't be able to understand, having never read Amazing Spider-Man and having no clue what's been going on with him (at least the MK title allowed for fans who didn't want to read every other Spiser-title), or I DON'T buy the first three or four issues, which kinda sucks in its own right.

I'm not commenting on Joe's mutant remarks. They're the same comments used for every other "earth-shattering" event that changes nothing. Joe's being dishonest, in my opinion, and I'm rethinking my commitment to A LOT of the Marvel titles I read...

If they were annoucing that they were going to kill off Wolverine for at least five years, and I wouldn't have to endure him anywhere, then, I'd be jumping for joy. But, as Mr. Mother said, this is just the same, tired "It all changes....but not really" soundbite that the House of No-Ideas is so known for. You know, Quesada, Stan Lee was into hyperbole, not outright lying...

I'd like to know what people really think. Maybe someone will remember this poll when the time comes and we can compare speculation to fact.
How long do you think it will be before Marvel introduces a brand new mutant?
single choice
0-6 months (47%, 7 Votes)
6-12 months (33%, 5 Votes)
1-3 years (13%, 2 Votes)
More than 3 years (0%, 0 Votes)
Moments after Quesada is replaced (7%, 1 Votes)
Total Votes: 15
Voting on this poll ends: 2005-10-24 2:42 PM

i voted 6-12 months, but that is discounting the fact that he stated that the mutants would be paired down, but immediately following the house of m he said new ones would be coming..so i'm discounting those...

Six to twelve sounds reasonable. As soon as someone like Loeb or Winick decides they wanna create a new mutant or resurrect one of the dead ones, Quesada will bend over backwards to give 'em the reach-around.

plus in a new newsarama interview he wiggled out of it a bit by stating " there are already some stories that were previously OK'd, or were in the works..so you may see some there too" yeah, whatever.

The first two issues of House of M were unoriginal and poorly told, and the second one was so fucking boring-and-predictable (that's a catchphrase of mine) it was unreadable. But, in all fairness, issue 7, where this shit happens, is actually very well written, very enjoyble, and full of emotion, even for someone not familiar with the characters and the events like me. I checked it out out of curiosity and, surprisingly, didn't regret it.

*Spoiler*

In house of M #8 the vast majority of mutants in the Marvel Universe have lost their powers. So far, the only "major" mutants who have lost their powers are Iceman and Magneto. Scarlet Witch was shown and she seems to have lost her memory. And speaking of memory, Wolverine can now apparantly remember his entire life. In what seems like an interesting twist to me (if you read both DC and Marvel) Spider-Man begged Doctor Strange to erase his memory so he would not remember the "perfect life" he lived during house of M. Some characters remmeber what happened and others don't. Also, the Avengers were alerted to an intruder at the ruins of their old mansion. When they got there, Hawkeye's costume and an article were hanfging up there. They were hung up by purple arrows.

Overall, it seems like this could lead to some very interesting stuff. I'm kind of upset that Iceman was "de-powered". I've been a fan of his since before I even started reading comic books when he was on "Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends".

Thanks NotWedge. I'm going to guess depowered Iceman isn't permanent. As for Magneto, hasn't he been depowered before? (besides being killed a couple of times & babyfied at one point)

I read Decimation #1 out of curiosity. Such a misleading name: it's just people crying over not being mutants anymore. Seems like the most important mutants to lose their powers, other than Mags and Iceman, are Blob and Jubilee. WHOA.

In the hilariously long list of spin-offs at the end of the comic ("Son of M"? "Generation M"? Milking shit more than they should is the best Marvel can do), she-Nightcrawler appears to be in a cover. If THAT still has powers, then all irrelevant mutants haven't been depowered as they promised.

The other huge permanent effect of House of M is that suddenly Wolverine remembers his whole life. Here's his reaction to knowing his origin:

More House of M spin-offs have been announced:

Doctor Strange: Doc of M
Learn the Doc's opinion on the whole thing.

Luke Cage: In Da House
Black mutants were also affected by the tragedy, and Luke helps them cope.
