Everybody has most likely dealt with a situation when they were at school, and now that I'm in grad school, I've learned that things don't change.

Long story VERY short, I'm stuck with not one, but a trio of slackers who won't take the assignment seriously. I'm considering several steps to take to encourage these slackers to participate, becasue I'll be damned if I'm gonna sit back and let some undergrad motherfucker screw with my GPA again. But I'm not sure which is the right way to approach this situation.

If you were in my position, which of these would you use to deal with slackers?

1) A chainsaw

2) A shotgun

3) A Super Soaker & a cattle prod

4) Feed them to a hoard of rabid squirrels

5) Tie them to a chair and make them listen to the Super Milk Chan theme for 48 hours in a row

Well before you do any of that, I'd recommend talking to the professor/instructor. All the stories I've heard of slackers in study groups have ended up either with the slacker being ousted from the group, or the slacker getting poor grades for not doing his or her part.

DK, you're in grad school, but working on a group project with undergrads? You guys are grouped as equals?

If this is the case, you simply report their behavior to the professor/instructor and he/she should re-arrange things accordingly or he/she should pull the other students in for a nice, friendly chat.

If the prof or instructor refuses to do either one of these things, you need to find out why. But I'm guessing he/she will take reasonable action. And if he/she doesn't, well, then you may have to speak to the department chair if you genuinely feel you can't work in this situation satisfactorily.

When I've been stuck in shit like this, I just put in the extra effort and turn the entire assignment out myself. I submit it to the prof as such as well, giving no credit to the 'group'.

It sucks, I know...your time is already pressed as it is. But it's the only solution. No matter what you try, you're going to get shit from these guys. Even if you can get them to participate, you're going to get sub-standard work.

but really id talk to the professors see what they say, maybe they will let you do your part turn it in and flunk the others or the four of you might have a sit down.

id also get your partners phone numbers and do alittle harrassment like "did you get so and such done yet?" "i need you to get it done so i can look over it and piece this project tegther." just nag, bug the heck out of them. that sometimes works for me lol

but sorry dude. i think weve all been there and done that so i feel for yah.

And, to be fair, one of my favorite friends there is blind and I take every opportunity available to make fun of that and we're still friends. That guy never fit there. He never got the spirit of the RKMBs. We're gonna keep an eye on the obits, see if he finally left or if he really did have a heart attack.

A fistful of rolled up quarters usually gets the job done.

Just give that thing a good swing, and BAM! Won't even know what hit 'em.

I'm taking an undergrad class at a grad level as an independent study, because all the other possibilties were off-limits due to schedule conflicts. But as for equals...well, I've kinda staged a coup and assumed command of the group in an attempt to get everybody to do their job. I don't think we're on equal footing anymore.

I don't have the best track record when it comes to working with groups, mostly because of the people I work with. Too often I find myself paired with slackers, and there was one reeeeeeeeeeeeally ugly situation where I was back-stabbed and shut out from the group because...hell, I have no idea what was going through their heads. But back-stabbing is pretty much unforgivable where I'm concerned. It's one of my very, very, very few "I will hold a grudge until the day I die" things.

This current situation is just slackerism combined with an unfortunate case of too many people in the group, making it hard for us to meet up when we need to.

Also, professors usually don't want to get involved with situations like this, from my experience. So I've learned how to handle things myself and take charge when nobody else will.

Still, a chainsaw is a hell of a motivator, you've gotta admit that.

Was this before or after their case of slackerism?

I ask that only in preface to this: If you jumped in to assert command/control of the group at the outset, don't be totally surprised when members of the group slack off. If you make it seem that things are to be done your way, other people are often more than willing, then, to let you do all the work.

You're not in elementary school anymore, boy. Be a man and punch 'em.

Sure.

Give you a chance to try grad school at another school. But sometimes ya gotta lay the leather to the little shits.

After.

More accurately, I took command because nobody was doing their part, and nobody else was willing to get the group working.

With everything else I have to do these days, taking charge of a big group project wasn't something I really wanted to do. But getting a lousy grade on account of other people not getting their act together was something I wanted to do even less.
