Is that how you make it through the day? By telling yourself that?

That doesn't answer my question at all.

There was nothing psychotic about him. Just because he was eccentric, that doesn't make him cognizantly impared.
Norton's character was psychotic. Tyler Durden was psychopathic, the one who lashed out against the world and tried to remake it in his image. Durden was the villian, the one the narrator had to fight and destroy in order to regain his own mind.

Yes, but wouldn't some anti-consumerists consider that view an heroic one?

I can concede that Tyler was a villain of sorts (although I still don't think there really was a set villain, aside from Capitalism, in that movie), but I don't think he qualifies as psychopathic since he's perfectly able to function in modern society. He just doesn't want to the way it wants him to. Dangerous? Yeah, okay. But not psycho.

He blows fucking buildings up which puts people at risk, that makes him psychopathic. He wants to remake the world in his image, but does not care how that effects other people!

By that token, is a murderer a heroic figure if other murderers say he is?

That makes him narcissistic, not psychopathic.

All of the characters in the Matrix blew shit up to remake the world in their image. Does that make them villains? Same argument could be made with the Boondock Saints as well.
With regards to Marla, it definitely seems like Tyler wanted to kill her. But Tyler's motives were always very conflicted because they were actually Narrator's motives all along. Perhaps the Tyler personality only wanted to kill her so that he could drive the Narrator personality to the breaking point where he could take control again. Tyler always did seem keen on training and educating Jack.

The Boondock Saints are vigilantes, making them anti-heroes rather than heroes or villains!
As for the Matrix, from what I have seen of that, they are all villains for making such crappy movies!

So why couldn't Tyler be considered an anti-hero? His actions are very similar to Robin Hood's and Robin is considered a hero.

Maj. John Reisman - I never went in for embroidery, just results.
D-Day is just over the horizon for the bloody European theater of WWII. Major John Reisman is given an important mission to help disrupt the Riech's ability to respond to the massive invasion that involves parachuting deep into Nazi held territory. Instead of being given the most capable, and well trained men in the Army to perform such an important task, Reisman has to choose twelve men sentenced to death or life imprisonment as his team. His stubborn attitude with the top brass got him volunteered for this shit assignment, but Reisman winds up not just training a team of kick ass soldiers. He also gives them back a bit of that self respect they'd been denied in prison. Reisman transforms a group of anti-social degenerates into a cohesive unit. He turns them into the Dirty Dozen.
Lucas 'Luke' Jackson - Well that oughta be easy for a genuine son of a bitch.
Just when you think you've broken "Cool Hand Luke", he makes another run for his freedom. Not to be detered by the pain and punishment that will most definitely be inflicted upon him for failure, Luke Jackson doesn't give up. Freedom is all he wants, and he won't rest until he gets it back.

His duty is to make sure that the men and women who belong behind bars get and stay there. But he also has a resposibility to uphold justice. When fugitive Richard Kimble stops acting like a guilty man on the run, and his half baked aliby begins to gain credence, Gerard becomes a man with two goals: 1) Catch his fugitive. 2) Find out the truth behind the murder of Dr. Kimble's wife. And he doesn't stop until he achieves both.
Hmmmm...when I get around to making up my list he just might be on it. Good show, doc.
I've taken the word inspire in Chewy's first post to mean more than just funny comebacks and such. I'm trying to pick characters whose words and actions (even though many are humorous) were done for something that I can respect or even try to emulate.

Because Tyler risked killing innocents by his actions, Robin Hood didnt!

Robin didn't quite have the technology to do so. Plus Tyler cleared out the buildings before blowing them up.

He cleared them out yes, but do you not think an exploding building risked inocent passers by or people wandering in afterwards?

Yeah, Tyler did say that Project Mayhem was quite willing to break a few eggs for their omlet.

Depends. The patriots who liberated America used hit and run type tactics that we consider quite heroic, but you Brits probably considered terrorism.

True. I guess it all comes down to what you would have preferred more: A second neolithic era engineered by Tyler or a still capitalist system.
