Marvel: Ultimate Alliance features a unique storyline where the missions players accept, the objectives they complete, and their interactions with other characters throughout the game directly impact how the story plays out. The game also features a robust multiplayer component where fans can band together with friends as their favorite Marvel Super Heroes, and fight evil in both on and offline cooperative story modes. There’s also a Competitive Mode where the game tracks various in-game stats so players can see how well they stack up against one another – affecting the amount of experience points earned and how equipment is distributed. Created by Raven Software and C.B. Cebulski, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance will be the first Super Hero game out for all next-gen gaming systems, and will also be available on current-gen, handheld and PC platforms. So I guess the other 110+ Marvel characters aren't playable.

DC are meant to be doing something like this aswell. Like City of Heroes/Villains except with the DC guys and hopefully a little more improved, though going on DC's track-record with games, i dont think it will be
This Marvel game doesn't sound like much. Should have called it "X-men legends but with some more playable chumps". A fitting name for what will probably be a cliched co-allition of heroes for no constrcutive reason in a mediocre game. Heres hoping im wrong!...

Missed this post, Flamer. Yeah, bub. You'll be wrong as shit. Exclusive: Matthew Paul on Marvel: Ultimate Alliance Source: SuperHeroHype his November, Activision will launch Marvel: Ultimate Alliance on PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, PS2, Xbox, PC, PSP and GBA. The all-new action/RPG features the largest roster of comic book characters ever seen in a video game. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance features a deep, rich gameplay experience by offering total team customization, where players create their own team name, icon and vehicle, as well as establish their team reputation as they play throughout the story. Gamers also have the option to level up each character individually to their liking, or all team members at the same time to keep their heroes balanced. With the game's new combat system, players battle against the world's most notorious Marvel Super Villains in the air, underwater, and on the ground, using grappling, blocking and dodging moves, by charging up their superhero powers before unleashing them, and using environmental objects as one and two-handed weapons. Superhero Hype! caught up with Activision Producer Matthew Paul recently to talk about the anticipated game: Superhero Hype!: "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance" has the largest roster of Marvel superhero characters ever in a videogame. Can you let us know how many characters are in the game and how many are playable? Matthew Paul: In "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance," there are over 140 total characters in the game and more than 20 playable Super Heroes. Each of the playable characters also has at least four different costumes and that's not included in the numbers above. So, I think it goes without saying that there is a huge amount of variety in the game. SHH!: Who are the favorite characters to use around the office? Do people stick with the big names like Spidey and Captain America or are there some surprising favorites? Paul: Spider-Man, Captain America and Wolverine are of course big favorites. I think that everyone thinks they always have the best character regardless of who it is, because you are able to make the characters your own. I usually pick Ghost Rider, but Human Torch is my alternate for certain situations that require flying. Dr. Strange is also really cool and has some awesome powers. SHH!: Our audience is REALLY into comics, can you tell them how you came up with a story that features so many characters from different Marvel worlds? Paul: Actually, the core of the story for "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance" wasn't that hard because of the number of good heroes, villains and moments in the Marvel universe. The hardest part was trying to pick all the best parts and fit them into a story that we could finish in our lifetime! The story is a combination of the basic plots of Secret Wars and the new Secret War and major comic book moments in Super Heroes' individual stories. We then placed all of that within a few great environments that will be familiar to every Marvel fan. We even had Marvel editor C.B. Cebulski help us craft the story so that it stayed true to the Marvel canon. It's been a real fun, but grueling process keeping everything straight, but at the end of the day we're sure fans won't be let down. SHH!: So what's the story of the game? We've seen a little about Dr. Doom and Galactus, but what's the overall reason for all of these heroes to come together? Is it something big? Paul: Well, if you watch our opening cinematic, the heroes learn that Dr. Doom is attacking Nick Fury's helicarrier. Fury calls in the heroes to help him defeat Doom but they soon learn that Doom has a secret motive for attacking the helicarrier. The heroes then have to search for the reasons behind Doom's attack, which begins this epic quest. I can't give out more information than that or I start giving away all the plot twists. Uh oh…did somebody say plot twists…I think so. SHH!: How are you using the power of the next-generation consoles to bring these Marvel characters to life? Paul: It was our goal from the very beginning to use the capabilities of the next-generation to add life-like details to the characters in "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance." When you look at Captain America, you can see the chain mesh in his costume. Or for the Thing, his body really looks like weathered stone and rock. The details also come out in the environments and in the Super Hero powers. At times, you feel more like you're watching a blockbuster Super Hero movie as opposed to a video game because it looks so real. SHH!: How different will the Wii version be compared to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions? Paul: The Wii contains much of the great content found in the PS3 and Xbox 360, but it also has a unique set of controls that are both intuitive to use and make you feel like a hero yourself. We've added icons to the game to teach the player how to use the controls, and for most people, "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance" will just be pick up and play. SHH!: Online play was a great addition to "X-Men Legends II." What are you adding to the online play of "Ultimate Alliance" to keep fans up late at night? Paul: You can play "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance" from beginning to end with up to four players. However, we've gone a few steps further by adding new ways to play, including one player being the hero and other players being the villains in certain missions. There is also an alternative game mode where players still have the same goal of completing the story, but they are ranked against other players in the game. The player with the best stats at the end of a mission wins a bonus to take into the next mission. SHH!: Can you tell us about the ability to customize each playable character? Why is this important to gameplay? Paul: Each hero can get equipment, upgraded powers and stats as they level up. The big customization in "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance" is in the many unlockable costumes. Each costume is more than just a cosmetic difference - the costumes contain their own unique stats and powers. For example, you might prefer to play as Spider-Man in the black costume over Spider-Man in the red and blue costume because of the special powers in the black one. It all depends on how much you want to manage each character, and also the teams of characters. SHH!: What locations can we expect to see in the game? Paul: "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance" sends you all around the Marvel universe and beyond. From Nick Fury's helicarrier, to the underwater city of Atlantis, to the Skrull homeplanet and even Murderworld, players and Marvel fans will definitely appreciate being able to finally visit these places in a great action/RPG video game. SHH!: Tell us about the branching storyline and how that might change the progression of the game for players. Paul: There are many key decisions that the player has to make in "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance." One, for example, is to save Prince Namor. If you do so, not only does it change the mission and how you beat it, but at the end of the game, we have an epilogue cut scene system that dynamically changes to reflect the choices you made throughout the story. There are many more decisions, and each of them helps piece together how your epilogue cut scene will play out once you've passed the final boss battle. So you can go through the game multiple times, make different choices at each point, and get to see the different ways you are able to affect the overall Marvel universe. SHH!: Are there any plans yet to add new levels or characters by downloads after the game's been out? Paul: Our only goal right now is to get "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance" done. But, if there were ever a game that had a ton of content to pull from, it would be "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance." I'm sure we'll evaluate additional downloads once the game is finished. SHH!: When the game launches this fall, who will be on your four hero team? Paul: I'll be playing with Human Torch, Ghost Rider, Wolverine and Elektra. Who will you be playing with? Visit the game's official website to determine what your line-up will be!

This isn't JUST for online play, right? And, while I know they say "oh it's got 20 playable character", my money tells me it will just be their classic or profitable characters. Elektra? Yawn. If they let me play more obscure characters like Shang-Chi or Wonder Man or Longshot...then I'll know it's a badass game...

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/775/775365p1.htmlMarch 23, 2007 - Good news Merry Marvel fans, Activision's Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is getting the Hulk in April. Today, Activision announced plans to release its first expansion pack for last year's well-received Marvel RPG. Marvel: Ultimate Heroes and Villains expansion adds eight new playable characters. Joining the aforementioned green behemoth are Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Hawkeye, Magneto, Venom, Sabretooth and Doctor Doom. Each character comes with new signature powers, skins, dialogue and conversations. And yes, 10 new Achievements are being added, bringing Ultimate Alliance's total to a whopping 60 possible Achievements. "The signature gameplay of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance has made it a favorite among fans, as well as the best-selling Super Hero game on the Xbox 360 to date," said Rob Kostich, VP of global brand management at Activision. "By adding some of the biggest names in the Marvel Universe to the roster we're enabling Xbox 360 gamers to build a variety of all-new teams and enjoy the epic action in brand new ways." The content does not add any new areas or villains to battle. But it adds the friggin' Hulk, so that may be reason enough for comic geeks to give the expansion pack a try. The eight characters are also being fitted to match current Marvel team bonuses already in the game. New teams are also being added to take advantage of the expanded roster.

Looks like a rip-off. I think it's 10 bucks for 8 characters, without any new levels...

Just got it for the PS3 and I am upset this didnt come to be!
Now according to the blurb on the back, the PS3 version has 2 extra playable characters (dunno if this means two more than every other system or just the PS2 version). The selection is quite interesting, and with alternate costumes, it actually opens up other charcters (I dont know if this is where they get the 140 characters from).
I would assume that when they talk about the fact their are 140 characters, I would guess they are also talking about the villains (so far I've only played a short way in and have seen Doom, Scorpion and Bullseye, plus a whole bunch of Ultron robot drones).
Playable characters and costumes are: Captain America - classic, ultimate, WWII & US Agent Iron Man - classic, ultimate, New Avenger, War Machine Luke Cage - Hero for hire, New Avenger, street, modern Black Panther - classic, modern, ceremonial, holy armour Blade - classic, ultimate, Nightstalker, Daywalker Nick Fury - stealth, classic, ultimate, General Fury Deadpool -assassin, Weapon X, classic, ultimate Spider-Woman - classic, Secret wars, Spider-Girl, Agent of SHIELD Spider-Man - classic, symbiote, Scarlet Spider, Stark armour Moon Knight - classic, Khonshu, ultimate Ms. Marvel - Warbird, original, Binary, Ventura Doctor Strange - classic, royal seer, blue mage, ultimate Ghost Rider - classic (Ketch), original, Vengeance, western Silver Surfer - silver age, power surge, vitality, heavy damage (they all look identical to me) Daredevil - classic, original, armored, Marvel Knight Mr. Fantastic - classic, original, new Marvel, ultimate Thing - modern, original, classic, ultimate Thor - ultimate, classic, Beta Ray Bill, Asgardian armour Storm - astonishing, retro, ultimate, classic Invisible Woman - original, ultimate, new Marvel, classic Wolverine - modern, ultimate, classic, astonishing Human Torch - ultimate, original, modern, classic Elektra - classic, ultimate, stealth, assassin Colossus - ultimate, classic, astonishing, retro Iceman - classic, spiky, Bobby Drake, original
Overall its a nice little selection, with a mix of the usual suspects (Spidey, Cap, Wolverine etc) mixed with some more unusual (Moon Knight, Cage, Ghost Rider etc). At least one notable absense to my mind is The Hulk.
A whole bunch of these characters have to be unlocked first before you can use them, which should come as no surprise, but can easily be unlocked with a down/up/left/right sequence, and the same goes for the alternate costumes.
The gameplay is identical to X-Men Legends, so if you have already played that, it is pretty easy to get into.
What I like about it with the variant costumes is for the most part they are costumes you wanna see, and are actually real rather than "Spidey in underwater costume" "Wolverine in spaceman costume" which has been the case in some previous superhero games!
With the costumes, I love seeing the old yellow Daredevil costume, the brown Wolverine costume, the old school Johnny Blaze costume and the alternate heroes, if you will, such as War Machine, the various different Spider-Women, US Agent, cowboy Ghost Rider, Beta Ray Bill and Vengeance, but sadly no Thunderstrike.
The only other hero I have seen so far, who isnt playable, is Black Widow.
Graphics, unsurprisingly, are magnificent, and the FMV sequences are mind blowing (right down to the texture of the costume material in close up shots) but you do definetly get the feeling of this being a port, as it doesnt stretch the capabilities of the machine other than on graphics. With the power of the PS3 and the capacity of the discs, they could have probably given us double or at least a dozen more playable characters! Maybe a sequel will address this if they do one!
On the back of the game it states that this is HD 720p/1080p/1080i, which surprises me as I was lead to believe that no game has been made yet thats more than 720, plus games like Fall of man look better in game to me, and thats only 720.
Anyone wh has played, and liked, X-Men legends should like this, and it will definetley appeal to fan boy geeks who just wanna play characters other than Spider-Man and the X-Men. I mean, there is just something so satisfying with playing as Moon Knight, Daredevil or Ghost Rider.
Plus, as its a four man team you control, you can either play as a set team (Avengers, FF, X-Men) or you can create something of a dream team or strange combinations (War Machine, Scarlet Spider, Blade & Moon Knight for example). Of course like legends, you can mix and match the team as you play through the game.
Surprised though that this is one of the more expensive games when you consider it wasnt developed specifically for the PS3, and has been around quite a while on the PS2 and other systems (but I got it for nearly a third of the price, so I aint complaining).
Overall its a worthwhile purchase, but probably wont spend as much time being played as other games!

Hold on a second, firstly two of the characters were available in the X-Men Legends game, which doesnt make them special, and the last four are all villains, so how can you play as them (especially as Doom is the villain orchestrating the whole Masters Of Evil plot in the storyline)?

how's the system requirements on this one? I've read from user comments that it needs a beefy rig and I'm holding off on trying it until I'm sure it will run smoothly on my system.
If it's basically the same as X-men Legends II, then I guess I'm fine since I can run that shit on max quality settings without any slowdowns.

I have no idea what the PC specs are as I play it on the PS3. I would assume its pretty similar in game graphically to Legends, but it depends on what they do with the FMV as I dont remember the PS2 version of Legends having much in the way of FMV and I never played Legends 2!

The games gorgeous and fun as fuck. Thing is they dropped the ball on the polish a bit. The Legends series format was actually a bit better in that you could customize each mutant to your playstle. For instance you could pump Rogues Ms Marvelesque abilites or go more the stunner route with her touch/kiss ( ) skills. Thing about M:UA is that the characters only really have 1 or 2 good skills and if you want to play with them effectively you must use those abilities over all detracting from the malleability of the characters. Some of the characters are close to what they should be. Some... not so much. Again. By far the most beautiful and high production value superhero beat-em-up. But in my opinion, a slight step backwards in actual game design. That said I still highly recommend a run through with this game with your system of choice. PC/360 being my recommendations.
