One thing I've found that helped me improve my writing (after years of neglect, and I wasn't that great back in college to be honest) was doing a lot of reading. Sure I read books in school, but I think what helped me become a better writer was reading fanfic. In a sense, I got to see how other people like me (regular people, not professional writers) wrote, as opposed to those who get paid to do that for a living.
As much as people hate it, I've found some good stuff on ff.net.
