Big Ben is out and Hines Ward is hurting. I'm thinking the Steelers open with a loss.
Of course, the refs could change that....

let there be football!
After Saban's late flag, Steelers roll
By ALAN ROBINSON, AP Sports Writer
PITTSBURGH - Referee Walt Coleman stood waiting patiently for the red flag he sensed was coming from the Miami Dolphins' sideline. A minute or so before, the Steelers had gone ahead on a scoring play that may have taken tight end Heath Miller out of bounds, and there was no reason not to challenge.
Still, the challenge flag remained firmly in Dolphins coach Nick Saban's hand. Even as the teams lined up for the extra point. Even as center Greg Warren leaned over the ball before snapping it to holder Chris Gardocki.
Finally, the flag requesting a replay review fluttered to the turf, only no official was watching as Jeff Reed converted the kick. Saban was a moment too late — to challenge to call and, perhaps, to save the game for the Dolphins.
Can a coach be penalized for delay?
"The officials said they didn't see it," Saban said. "Whose fault is that?"
To a few Dolphins fans, the blame for a 28-17 loss to Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh in the NFL's season-opening game Thursday night might not rest entirely on the players. No doubt a few were asking themselves, "Why didn't he throw the flag earlier?"
Miller's 87-yard scoring catch with about six minutes remaining was one of the longest in history by an NFL tight end and gave Pittsburgh a 21-17 lead. The problem was it probably should have been an 85-yard catch, and no touchdown.
TV replays showed Miller going out of bounds and, if Saban had challenged in time, the Steelers probably would have been forced to try to score from around the 2-yard line. The previous time they had the ball so close, quarterback Charlie Batch fumbled at the Miami 1 with the Dolphins recovering.
Maybe that's why Coleman seemed as surprised as anyone when he didn't see the flag. By the time Saban tossed it, the officials were focused on the extra-point try.
"After the ball was snapped, we can't go back to the previous snap," Coleman said. "Once they snapped the ball on the try, there was nothing we could do."
Saban contends he threw the flag in time.
"It was well before the kicker kicked it," Saban said. "The official said he didn't see it, and when he said he didn't see it, there was nothing he could do. That shouldn't happen."
Saban's mistake was the most curious on a night neither team played all that well, but it wasn't the only one by the Dolphins. Daunte Culpepper, the former Vikings quarterback playing his first game since tearing three knee ligaments last year, was intercepted twice following Miller's score. One was a 42-yard touchdown return by linebacker Joey Porter that effectively ruined Culpepper's debut game with the Dolphins.
The Super Bowl champion Steelers had plenty of reasons to win their ninth in a row, including backup quarterback Charlie Batch's three touchdown passes, Willie Parker's 115 yards rushing and Porter's big play. Yet they easily could have lost, and they knew it, especially after falling behind 17-14 in the third quarter on Ronnie Brown's 5-yard touchdown run.
Miller also knows he was lucky his score counted. Asked afterward if he was certain he got in, he said, laughing, "Touchdown. Yeah."
"It didn't go as well as we liked it to. If we had scripted it, it probably wouldn't have been like that," Miller said. "It was scrappy game but we came out on top."
Without Ben Roethlisberger, too, as the quarterback sat out after having his appendix removed on Sunday. Batch took his place and had his first three TD pass game since 2001 with Detroit. He had thrown only one scoring pass the previous four seasons combined.
"The guys are comfortable with Charlie," said Hines Ward, who returned from a monthlong hamstring injury layoff to make a 7-yard touchdown catch that put the Steelers up 14-7. "You have to remember that Charlie was 2-0 when he was the starter last year."
The Steelers don't play again until a Monday night game at Jacksonville on Sept. 18 and, despite Batch's effective play, they are hopeful Roethlisberger can return that night.
The Dolphins also expect to come back from this, a disappointing loss in a game they probably shouldn't have won — not on a night they were outrushed 143-38 — but one they felt they could have won.
"We played well into the fourth quarter, but you can't turn the ball over in this league," Culpepper said. "We're better than that. We know we're better than that."
The Steelers believe they are, too. Maybe that's why Porter planted a kiss on coach Bill Cowher following his first career interception return touchdown.
"I try to tell you guys that me and him are close," Porter said.
Notes:@ Miller's catch was 3 yards short of tying for the longest in Steelers history. ... A moment of silence was held before the game for Pittsburgh Mayor Bob O'Connor, who was buried earlier in the day. O'Connor died of brain caner on Friday. ... Steelers WR Nate Washington's 27-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter was his first NFL regular-season reception. ... Porter also had two sacks. ... The Steelers are 31-0-1 in the last 32 games they have a 100-yard rusher.
jets will win!

I never liked having such an anonymous name (no offense AO). My name is Bradley, and I always wanted to use this alias.

The Lions will suck as long as Ford owns them. At least, that's what we think over here. The proper response to everything the Lions do is "It's the Lions." Being apathetic is the only way to be able to acknowledge we have an NFL team here. Kitna is good QB with a great attitude. All the Lions' QB's have great attitudes. Kitna was voted one of the five team captains, and at the very least we should see some inspired football from this club. Bad football, but inspired.

Well, I guess being a Lions' coach finally got to him. That, or he figured he would give us more entertainment in on evening than the Lions can give in an entire season. This has to be a record for cracking under pressure.

The Lions will win at leat 9 games this year.....maybe more. They will surprise people for sure. Look for Roy Williams to have 15 TDs and Kevin Jones to have over 1000 yards and maybe 12-15 TDs this year.

I too think the Lions will be better. I don't see them being the worst team in that division. Kitna will be just what they needed at QB. He's not flashy, but he's smart, decent arm and accuracy, and his teammates will play for him. The Bengals hated to see him go. I'm not sure they'll win 9 games (I'm not sure who's on their schedule this year), though.

I didn't think the QB was as big an issue for Detroit as their terrible offensive line, so it's difficult to predict just how much, if any, improvement they'll make. They've had and still have talent at the skill positions, and an underrated defense. On paper, they look like they could make a run at the playoffs, especially in NFC North, which I think is the worst division in football.

But you can't say "besides them". There are only four teams. My expensive calculator says Seattle represents...25% of the entire NFC West!
It's certainly not hard to see why people like the Cardinals. Edge and Leinart to go along with the best receiver tandem in football. If it was any other franchise, with the same roster, people would be really excited, I bet.

well heres how i see it and i dont know why im going into detail like this but... well hell i just feel like it....
Seahawks- losing the superbowl is never a good thing for ur team and recent history has shown its downright fatal. Losing Hutchinson is really going to hurt on that left side more than they think. And not to mention the madden curse is still in effect. 11-5 if there lucky.
St. Louis- they have a new coach which means it will probably take some time for him to round the troops. The offense is solid with Tory Holt and Stephen Davis. There defense is horrible however and they lost some of their better players to free agency. This team got swept by my niners last year. tough schedule too- 6-10
Arizona- where all the hype is. New stadium, new star running back and Leinart being the future. This year however will be more of the same. Love the recivers but Kurt Warner is getting old and he cant stay healty not to mention he doesnt have the vision he once did. Edge looked like a big pickup but hes not playing with peyton and his line anymore. The cards line sucks and they havent shown anything durring preseason of that changing. Not to mention Edge is getting old by running back standards and will start showing signs of slowing down. Imporved yes but still- 7-9
S.F. Im not even gonna state all the problems with my boys. Its all summed up with this. They finished the season ranked dead last in offense and defense. Some of that was injuries and some was just personel. Latter was helped with the signing of Larry Allen, Antonio Bryant and getting Vernon Davis. Still the offense will strugle with a new scheme and the defense will only be better if it can avoid the injury bug. 6-10 if lucky

Even if you're predictions are spot on, the division will still be better than the NFC North was last year, and I'm not sure I see improvement in the NFC North. Brett Favre's another year older(and he won't have Javon Walker to throw to). Daunte Culpepper didn't help Minnesota much last year, but even an FSU fan like me questions how 37-year-old Brad Johnson will do for a full season. Chicago overachieved last year(partly because the division is so terrible), and Detroit is Detroit.
Curse or no curse, Seattle's schedule makes five losses seem doubtful. I'm well aware of the super bowl loser trend, but the poor state of the NFC makes a significant decline unlikely.

I was impressed with the hard working defense. The offense was a little off, but the offensive line and Kitna looked good, so it may just be a matter of time before it comes together. Or, it could just be the Lions teasing everyone like they always do. Time will tell.

I was impressed with the hard working defense. The offense was a little off, but the offensive line and Kitna looked good, so it may just be a matter of time before it comes together. Or, it could just be the Lions teasing everyone like they always do. Time will tell.

big_pimp_tim-made it cool to roll in the first damn place! Mon Jun 11 2007 09:27 PM- harley finally rolled with me "I'm working with him...he's young but, there is much potential. He can apprentice with me and then he's yours for final training. He will remember the face of his father... Some day, Knutreturns just may be the greatest of us all...."-THE bastard

they weren't teasing....they really are a good team this year. They just had the bad luck of starting out with the NFC champs.

The Giants got a fucking screwing tonight. Holy shit was this game fixed or what. Worst officiating I've seen in along time.
