Prometheus said: Yeah, we won't see true new life breathed into this franchise until the Broccollis let go of it...
How are they holding it back? I don't know much background on this.
They're against allowing the Bond concept to branch out, expand, and evolve. For example, Brosnan had alot of cool, interesting, and new ideas that would help Bond become something more than a caricature of itself. He wanted to make it more serious, more dirty, more sexy, and overall, more real. He cited that using the same format for the character over the years has diluted much of the fun and edge of the concept. The guy kills people! He wanted to show that this isn't fake, or fun, or easy. He wanted to bring an air of realism to the world of spy games and secret agents that is sorely lacking in the franchise. He wanted to eliminate alot of the "witty catchphrases" used in there, that have degenerated into lame puns over the years. He wanted to take away the gadgets, and have Bond use real-world methods, as well as his own brains, to take on the bad guys. He wanted to loose some of the "pretty-boy" imagery Bond is known for.
The most he ever got out of all of this was when Bond was shown being captured, and tortured for a few months in that last movie. Of course, the status quo was maintained by the end, and that really bothered him. It was a factor in why the Broccollis dropped him.
You can see they're trying to do some of this in the new film, with the lack of gadgets and the like. Of course, instead of pushing forward, like he wanted (and as they should), they're simply wussing out and doing a "prequel"....
