When I know the backstory, maybe I will!

Pidgin Dictionary

Okay, I didn't realize Nigeria's native language was English, but here's a list Pidgin words also use, just to add a little flavor. I always wondered why my Jamacian roommate refered to my mother as 'auntie'.

Hope the last post was good. Euro, Chewy totally kicks my but at writing Emmanuel, but I'm really busting my butt here trying to get him right. Let me know if that was an okay follow-up to the Walrus.

CJ: That was a terrific addition to your story! I love the dialogue and interaction there!

That's all I ask, dear!

At any rate, I loved the post! Fun interactions between Nwanjoku and Bellatrix. I liked getting more of a glimpse into her character and am seriously jonesing for some more exposition as we go along. Keep up the good work!

Very good, CJ.

At first I found just the last line, where he introduce himself, somehow out of character... why the hell he should be so nice with his capturer?
Then, thinking of it, a boy that was looking for a better way of life to travel from Nigeria across the Sahara, and then sail over a crowded little boat over the Mediterranean, toward a land of which he doesn't know the language...

...he must be much more bold than how I envisioned them.

So, very good indeed. I think you shaped perfectly Emmanuel's behaviour.

Lately, I have been carefully reading and re - reading the entries by others in this story line. I am working at using my own writing style, but adapting it to conform somewhat with the writing styles of everyone else here.

This is my first venture into the realm of group writing. I am growing to like it.

I have entered another chapter into my own story tonight.

I hope it will make clear the direction I am now moving into.

I have created a back story for Ray. He is 25 and is a lawyer, and has been practicing law for a few years now.

But how is this possible? One normally graduates high school at or near age 18, then, after 4 years of collge, and one is 21 or 22 then... and, after 4 years of law school, he'd be about 26.

Ray is the son of a scientist. He has a very high IQ by Zi -Alorian and Earth standards. He skipped 2 nd and 4 th grade, and also 10 th grade, too. He had just turned 15 when he graduated high school.

He finished 4 years of college in 2.5 years. He was still several months away from his 18 th birthday when he entered law school!

He took it easy in law school, and graduated in 3 years. At age 21, he was a partner at a big law firm, but soon grew tired of it and wanted to do his own thing. He set up his own practice and mostly helps the poor, sometimes for free and sometimes for a very low fee. He uses a sliding fee scale; the clients pay what they can afford. He is a very good lawyer, and will take on a high profile case once in a while to be able to live just well enough to enjoy his time off.

He loves science, and could have become a scientist or a doctor, or whatever he wanted to be. He could have been a wealthy, very powerful man, but he chose to help the poor instead, as he inherited his father's kind and caring nature.

He loves all sports, football, baseball, hockey, etc. He's in great shape and loves to play sports. He likes his beer
and is not quite ready to settle down and marry, but he will sometime soon, and will be a loving husband and a fantastic father.

I'm just waiting to see how the story goes. I have problems adding to plot (it always terrifies me, in case I muck things up). I'm hoping to contribute something soon.

Spamm, I know the idea of posting can be terrifing (trust me, I've avoided pressing the 'continue' button on more than one occasion), but the worse that will happen is that we ask for a little 'tweaking' -- maybe a certain character doesn't act or say something the author agrees with, or something said contridicts common knowledge -- but I don't think we've ever had to do anything more than that.

Except that time Pro shot poor Juan...

SPAMM, CJ is correct. I, myself, was wary of writing in a group situation, but I just said. " What the hell?" and am doing it. Yeah, I kinda screwed up a bit, but have already taken steps to correct this. I have learned a few things already.

If you mess up, so what? You'll get some useful advice if you do, and this can only improve your writing. We're all in the same boat here, so, give it a shot and post!

Spamm, I really didn't have a real good idea of Sawyer, so I sort of stalled the plot until you're ready to bat again. Let me know if I did okay.

No, it's not just you. It's something many, if not all of us, have experienced in all these years (many of us, like Pro, Gooz, Danny, TTT, Mxy, Chewy and myself have started way back in 1999, in the DC Boards, with the mythical Message Board League).

My last few characters didn't really take, though... partly because the stories they were in died, but mostly because I hadn't invested enough time and creativity in them yet.

Now I'm hesitant to begin anything I can't finish.

Well, TTT, I don't think what you said it's really true... Both Pete, Kris and the first Mason Templar were loved by most of the Vanguard writers. The only problem could have been that you kept them alive for too short span of time...

As for the creativity you invested... think of your pulp posts about Chance... those were exceptionally good...

And now, the story, while being much more alive than the last few attempt to round robin, has a slow pace that makes it easy to follow even for busy people like we all seems to be these days.

TTT, Tabula Rasa is quite interesting! It has been fun, too.

Not to worry, TTT.. if it goes too long here without a post, I will do my best to encourage others to get back into it by writing my own segments.

I am very new to this " Group Writing " experience, and I enjoy it! I have learned that it can encourage others to write, when they see someone else has.

I can see where I have even improved a little. That is my goal - and to have fun with writing!

Got any advice for the next time, then? I looked through the thread and all I had to go on were two story post, so far as I can tell. I didn't see anything in this talk thread to help me out, either.

I mean, how serious is he? More sardonic? This is pretty tough for everyone right now, because it's difficult to get inside the writer's head to get inside the character's thread. Does that make sense?

Granted, I don't have Bellatrix fleshed out completely (actually, she just doesn't have that much flesh period...heh heh heh). But with more posts, it becomes easier to 'get' the character. For example, I'm pretty sure Doc doesn't want his robot tap-dancing, and no one should write Euro's spectre singing 'Ridin' Dirty'.

Personally, this 'unfamiliar ground' of another character has always slowed my progress...didn't at one time we had a sort of 'character bible' where people put notes on what to do and what could not be done with their characters?

I can appreciate that it's not easy to write Sawyer, but I find it best to think of him as totally cold-hearted and focussed. Danny's character Victor Reilly from the old VE stories is sorta similiar, although there are other ideas there. I'm planning another post which will flesh those out.

And I think that a bible type concept would be a good one, it always helps people understand characters.

We are just six writers here, cosidering that Pro and Mxy seem to have stopped posting... I don't think a bible here is needed, for now... maybe it would be sufficient that every poster writes a post where his/her character behave in a way that it would be enough to grasp how he/her talks, acts, and such.

For example, I think to have shown how superpowered Emmanuel talks and move... while I have yet to show how normal boy Nwanjoku does... a thing I will try to rectify as soon a s possible.

Writing a bible in the old MBL/TOMB/Vanguard way would be impractical, IMO, because one should give away too much... while many of us wants to reveal things bit after bit... or, as in my case, have yet to make them up.
