Ledger looks too much like Nicholson (makeup wise) in that shot. I was hoping they'd do something more radical.

I got into a discussion last night about the filming downtown and who's playing whom. Apparently the movie's filming is being disguised as a movie called "Rory's first kiss" or some shit like that. Shenanigans, we all know the truth. So anyway, the conversation led to my good friend thinking "Begins" was a prequel to the 89 movie. I'm sure most of the general movie going public thought the same. I quickly told her it wasn't and the Joker is in "The Dark Knight". She got upset! I tried explaining to her, for the next half an hour, that "Begins" is a revamp of the franchise after it tanked under Schumaker's direction. Anyone else here have a tough time getting it through to someone what the difference was between a prequel, sequel, and reinvisioning?

I usually find that a woman undertsands what you are telling her better when you tell it to her during anal sex. if it's her first time give it to her without lube.

To some extent, the producers are causing this problem by retelling the origins. They might be better off just telling good stories about Batman, the Joker, et al.

In any event, I don't know why its that big a deal for people. The Keaton/Nicholson Batman movie is nearly twenty years old now and the difference in years between that movie and this one is roughly the same as the Keaton movie and the 1960s TV show.

In fact, any one who can't understand that is probably the same type of person who, back in 1989, was bitching about no "POW" and "ZAP" in the Keaton film.

I've had to explain that too. I think the problem is that after watching the Star Wars prequels people assumed that the makers of BB were trying to do something similar (that is, base the whole movie on links to the old ones). Superman Returns probably enforced that notion, too.

It's obviously gonna be confusing to the general public to see a movie where Bats meets the Joker for the first time, if they already saw that in the 1989 movie. But fuck 'em, I say. They're only gonna let that annoy them if they want to.

Although in their defense, there were sequels to that franchise, so its not so much the gap between the 1st Keaton film and Begins, but the gap between BM&R and Begins, which is much smaller.

That franchise is a lot fresher in peoples minds plus the West Batman was a tv series and for some reason, people seem to happily accept that tv and movies are different.

You'd also have to say, the similarities between the costume in the 89 flick and the 05 flick, will always make it seem like its part of the same canon!

I agree though, anyone who cannot understand the simplicity of "its a new start", is just an idiot.
Do they think that the remake of the Longest yard is a sequel?

because for the movies to get good reviews and feedback and be appealing to non-comic readers they can't just throw the joker in with no explanation. maybe in a tv series where a bad episode can be redeemed next week, but not in a movie.

i actually don't think it will be an issue at all, no one thinks these bat-films are related to the older ones.

the keaton films and the west show/film had amazingly clear distinctions between the two, plus nearly 25 years.

the keaton films and the bale films will be compared and confused, without question, by the casual fan. the looks are similar, the tone is similar, the scenes are similar ("i'm batman"), etc. 16 years of separation is not all that much, and thats from batman 89 to begins. the last of the previous era, batman and robin, was only 8 years before batman begins, which is where the confusion about this being a new era will mostly stem.

regardless, i dont see it serving as a major sticking point, as continuity concerns rarely are to casual fans. harvey dent changed shades and personas between 1 and 3, im sure its not such an issue to see him again in "6."

and if "dark knight" is even nearly as kick ass as begins, i dont think anyone will care.

I disagree. Batman and Joker are well enough known that you can do a movie and people "get" who they are without retelling their origins.

the people at comic con do a task, then inform people online of the answer. then the people online do a task and inform the people at comic con of the answer. ...and its so fucking beautiful!

the photo that was on the site yesterday featured, like, an uncle sam all jokered up. people at home told the comicon people to look for it -- and it wasat those coordinaates, but who the fuck knows that. at the station, the comicon people were given makeup and painted up in the new creepy joker style

then, they were told to go back to comiccon and start running around, passing along a message to the online people.

now that the countdown on the site is over, the first thing it says (checkpoint1 ) is "tell your stooges on the ground to look up. they'll tell you what to do". they look up and see a message in the sky (phone number) call it, get next message, etc
