just saw superman / doomsday. didn't, at all, hate it.

i mean, alright, it wasn't the greatest thing ever. and, it 100% had only 10% in common with the books (which 50% of you complained about 100% of the time). but, geez, this thing was hailed as the craptacular event of the universe! and, if anything, i'd put an "at worst" rating on it in the range of an average justice league episode.

so, yeah, it was totally different from the comics. in many ways, that is poor by default in that its not rewarding fans of the actual comic issues with what they thought they were getting. i can understand why that'd be frustrating. thats not entirely negative to me since i didn't love the comic story all that much, which will likely invalidate my review to many, but whatever.

the pacing is a little awkward, in that doomsday sorta just appears and kills superman purdy quickly. part of the story, of course, but still. there was also no real impression that this fight was anything superman doesn't face 100 times a year. to their credit, the comics had the advantage of drawing out doomsday's rampage for an entire year, including the decimation of several heroes along the way. at least the fight scenes were pretty awesome.

i also missed the sense of "what the --!" that the comics had with the various superman pretenders. where people were hopeful, then worried, then pissed, then shocked, etc as the eradicator and cyborg and superboy, etc, parade just kept evolving. the sole "bizaro" superman didn't leave the same impression.

however, in some regards i think the movie was much stronger than how the comics portrayed the events. for example, the clear-cut explanation of superman's "death" and revival, that the comics seemed unable to do for a year or so, then sorta glossed over, then had to revisit. i liked the contrasted pairing of lois and martha ( ).

i thought the animation was good enough. extremely similar to the STAS style, but like JL, featuring its little differences. i thought the voice acting was pretty solid, minus lois. i liked the score. i thought the "superman 3" bizaro superman was also pretty funny. i thought the story was "neat" enough for a comic fan (perhaps non-hardcore) to enjoy, but especially so for a casual / movie / smallville fan.

i enjoyed it for what it was. i dunno. im not awarding any oscar (the guardian?) or anything. i just don't understand why it was so intensely abhored, assuming there was more to intensely loathe beyond the fact that it wasn't the comic book story in film.
