No. And I don't think my statement implies I said that.

But do you really think the average person puts much thought in safety when buying a car? Take a look at the average car advertisement. Ad agencies work very hard on them to try and appeal to what the average consumer for that particular vehicle wants. Most of the ads sell comfort (not safety), fuel economy and, above all, status and image. There is sometimes a brief mention of safety features but its almost never the selling point. This would seem to support the theory that people don't consider safety when choosing a new car.

And, beyond that, Doc is correct. The market includes Japanese cars. Part of the reason that Japanese cars are selling better than US vehicles is because they have better gas sippers then we do. This is more impetus for Ford and GM to play catch up than all the government regulations in the world. Because otherwise they lose market share and profits.
